FRENZY question: did the arcade version have music?
ColecoFan1981 replied to Flojomojo's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
It's the same thing with SPACE FURY and GORF. The arcade versions of both those games used synthesized speech. ~Ben -

How would that be done? But to do that I'd have to label everything and specifically. ~Ben -

Donkey Kong ColecoVision Donkey Kong Disassembly
ColecoFan1981 posted a topic in ColecoVision Programming
I've just disassembled the 16K and 24K ROM versions of the ColecoVision Donkey Kong. The reason I did this is so that you fellows can be able to help me determine where I should look within these two disassembly files in regards to which instruction is relevant to the bonus timer being computed. I also intend to share these files with you for the purpose of correcting certain bugs in the 24K ROM version, such as Mario falling right through the up elevator from his starting point. ~Ben Donkey Kong ColecoVision 24K.txt Donkey Kong (1982).asm -

ColecoVision ColecoVision Q*bert (1982/1983) - 16K?
ColecoFan1981 posted a topic in ColecoVision / Adam
Although its sequel, 1984's Q*bert's Qubes (called "Q*bert II" on its title screen), was a 16K ROM cartridge for the ColecoVision, I cannot help wonder whether the 1982 arcade classic that preceded it, Q*bert, could've gotten the same treatment in 1983 for the same console? If the CV Q*bert was a 16K cartridge (instead of 8K), then some of the graphics may have been truer to the arcade version, like part of the spinning disc having one of its hues matching the target color of the cube corresponding to each of the level's four rounds. There may even have been some truer speech synthesis for Q*bert and the gang, and if either Q*bert or Coily fall off the pyramid, a thud sound would be heard (just like the arcade version). What do you think? ~Ben -
The one Motorola chip and the TI chip both have a reading "8231" which would mean the 31st week of 1982, or that of August 2-8, 1982. The second Motorola chip has 8232 on it to mean it was made the week after the other two chips, or the week of August 9-15, 1982. Your example is still rather early as it is a 24K ROM. ~Ben

Has anyone ever taken apart any ColecoVision cartridges as to find out how old the ROM chips are in them? Regarding the TI chips, there are date codes on them explaining the year and week made. For example, "8301" denotes 1st week of calendar-year 1983. The reason I am presenting you with this question is so that I can find out when exactly Coleco started selling the 16K ROM version of Donkey Kong, as well as when the "For ColecoVision & Adam" variation label was first used. ~Ben

ColecoVision Vaporware Games Progress
ColecoFan1981 replied to retroillucid's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
My CV & Adam vaporware requests: * Super Smurf Rescue * Donkey Kong 3 * Circus Charlie (Parker Brothers) * Pole Position (AtariSoft) * Tac-Scan * Missile Command (AtariSoft) * Wild Western * Ms. Pac-Man (AtariSoft) ~Ben -
Inside every ColecoVision cartridge manual, there always is this line of text... "Press the Reset button and the title screen for (name of game cartridge) will appear on your TV." I suspect they really mean for you to turn the OFF/ON switch to ON, when the cartridge is inserted into the console. So, does anyone else know what that cryptic line of text means/meant? ~Ben

ColecoVision Order sheets from 1982
ColecoFan1981 replied to Tarzilla's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
I wonder if anyone has any equivalent order sheets from 1983 and 1984 showing titles such as Donkey Kong Junior, Looping, Pepper II and Mr. Do!? ~Ben -

The scoring algorithm is this: (Level # x 1000) + ((Round # - 1) x 250)) For level 1-3, for example, the algorithm calculated is (1 x 1000) + ((3 - 1) x 250) which amounts to 1500 bonus points. For level 3-4, the algorithm becomes (3 x 1000) + ((4 - 1) x 250) which amounts to 3750 bonus points. 5000 bonus points are awarded from Level 5 on. ~Ben

Here's the Tomy Tutor version of Scramble for comparison. ~Ben

Does anyone know how both Scramble and Super Cobra would have looked back in 1983 if the cartridge ROM size for both were at least 16K, preferably either 24K or 32K? The Parker Brothers release of Super Cobra was only a mere 8K in ROM; if it were 16K maybe we would've heard more of the original music and some of the graphics may have been more detailed. The pieces of music that were missing was the SC intro music (only the Scramble intro plays, upon system boot and after every 1000 miles passed), the mileage clear music (for every 1000 miles passed), and the final stage clear music (after booty is picked up successfully and without fail). And if Scramble - Super Cobra's space-themed predecessor - were released for the CV, whether by Coleco, Parker Brothers or perhaps Milton Bradley Electronics, it might have had several of the same sound effects as Super Cobra. I wonder if any mockups were created for a possible CV release of Scramble? ~Ben

Are IMDb USA release dates for arcade games correct?
ColecoFan1981 replied to Random Terrain's topic in Arcade and Pinball
I wonder if Wikipedia is wrong about the arcade Mario Bros. being released in Japan on July 14, 1983? Because another site lists it as being released in March 1983 in Japan, and then in the USA and Canada that May. But if Wikipedia is correct, then I'd assume the USA release date of MB for the arcades as being on August 13, 1983. ~Ben -
Are IMDb USA release dates for arcade games correct?

According to Wikipedia, Tac/Scan was actually released April 7, 1982 for distribution in arcades. ~Ben -
I wonder if the grayscale graphics on the original arcade version was partly the reason why Coleco never released its port for the CV? I mean, if the original arcade graphics weren't colored to start with, then how would 15 colors work for the CV port? ~Ben

If there is one thing I'd like to see corrected on the Mario Bros. homebrew for the ColecoVision, it would be that all the music I'm hearing would be in the same pitch as the arcade version of the game. For example, the Mozart piece that plays when you start the game (after inserting coin) was heard in the key of B-flat on the arcade version. Does anyone know whether or not the ColecoVision version of the Donkey Kong cart ever came in a white casing... like the Atari 2600 and some copies of the Intellivision version? This is not about eBay auctions of the Atari 2600 port mistaken for the CV port. What I want to find out is whether or not a white case version, with the CV's cartridge slot shape, ever existed for Donkey Kong on this system? Thank you, Ben

Thank you. Having mentioned that, was the prototype really any good like the Atari Protos review says it is? ~Ben

Is it true that Atari had plans on its drawing board during 1983 to release Xevious for its 5200 Super System, but ultimately dropped it because of declining 5200 sales and the impending video game crash that took hold at the end of that year? I'm also wondering if they planned to program a port of said game for the ColecoVision? ~Ben
