I picked up both condor attack and malagai sealed new in box. Malagai about 3 months ago and condor about a year and a half ago both from ebay. I'm still missing alot of mid level games like quadrun, bmx airmaster, rubiks cube, queberts cube,mr. Do castle, chase the chuck wagon, etc but figure I can pick them up later.
I got lucky on the boxed music machine my max bid was only like $100 over what it sold for. I'm curious did you end up selling your complete malagai? I was hoping that you kept your games because I know how long it takes to get there collecting but I know you have a lot of medical bills.
I'm very curious what the going rate for these are as well.
If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for your Condor Attack and Malagai? I'm not even sure what to expect for a boxed copy of Malagai, let alone a sealed one....Thanks for your help!-

Did this end up selling?

Trying a lot of searching, but I couldn't find an updated post on this topic.
Is there an "official" updated list?
Lots of developments like Red Sea Crossing, Gamma Attack, and Extra Terrestrials since this last post.
But unsure of known quantities, rankings, etc.

I was thinking more about this question and I think most of us approached it with a list of our favorite 2600 games. Another, approach would be, what are the most historically significant games? My list certainly changes when I think of the question this way.
Historically significant games:
- Combat - Pack in cart. It was everyone's introduction to the 2600
- Breakout - Breakout represents what the system was really designed to do
- Space Invaders - The game that really sold the system. I'd also say that it is more fun than the arcade version
- Asteroids and Missile Command - These go along with Space Invaders as initial arcade ports that made the 2600 the dominate system in its era.
- Pacman - First big disappointment from Atari that was owned by a lot of people. I'd say the start of the 2600 downfall (I actually like it as a kid)
- ET - People can argue that it was decent game, but it was a rushed movie tie in that was difficult to play and obtuse. The second nail in the proverbial coffin for the 2600
- Pitfall, River Raid, Kaboom and whatever was the first Activisiion game. First successful 3rd party game producer.
- Demon attack and maybe Atlantis - Imagic proved that someone else could do what Activision did
- Parker Bros Frogger - Probably the best port of a more modern arcade game (Yes, the Starpath one is better, but not many people owned it.)
No for some more controversial picks:
- A Swedish Mystique game (Custards Revenge, etc...) These games certainly created a lot of outrage for their existence and had a lot of teenage boys wishing they could get one. They certainly weren't good or even really erotic, but the existence of X-rated games on the 2600 had an impact on the industry.
- A Starpath/Arcadia Supercharger along with at least one game on cassette (Their version of Frogger is amazing, but I think any game is a good representative.) This showed what could be done with the Atari if the memory limitation was taken away. I put it under controversial as it was relatively rare.
- Basic - An attempt from Atari to justify the Computer part of the Atari name.
- The first hacked cartridge and the first full homebrew. - I would argue that the homebrew community that has evolved around the 2600 is part of its history
While this isn't the main intention of my recommendation request, I do totally see the value of this as long as it is clear the intentions. Fortunately I have most of the top list already except for Breakout, which I added to my wishlist

But I think the historical ones maybe should be their own list. I love lists (not a surprise to those that know me) so I could talk about stuff like this all day

So anyway, if possible, lets keep recommendations stated if they are because they are the most fun and interesting games for the system of historical choices.
Thanks!

Alright!
Here's an update for the main topic on hand:
Here's the list of what everyone's recommended with what I have already with an asterisk. And thanks to up2knowgood for the great trade offer -- I will put a + next to the ones that are pending that trade

I think it depends on how big of a fan you are of the console.
Homebrew might be a little much for a beginner, but I will make note of the suggestions for later.
I'm a big Genesis and Dreamcast fan, but I actually don't even own any homebrew for the system. After I catch up on other parts of my wishlist, I might eventually get there, but I'm a pretty conservative collector relatively speaking, so there's always a lot for me still to pick up.
-
Chetiry, Strat-o-gems Deluxe, and Hunchy 2. If you're going to play the 2600, why not get the best games? I'd add Boulderdash, but it's become impossible to find. Eliminating homebrews from contention seems both arbitrary and counterproductive, as any of these four are better than any original release title.
I understand, but starting out, I really want to focus on the original releases and then I might dig into the homebrew. As up2knogood mentioned, it also increases the budget

-
Unfortunately, I already own all of those, but no worries, here are the pictures of the four on your list.
Were you interesting in any of the others? I figured that was likely
Yeah I think I would be interested -- I'll PM you so we don't clog the thread
-
Sure, I was just going through and separating out my extras. On your list, I also have Pitfall II, Dragonfire, and Secret Quest. I'll provide pictures in a minute, Secret Quest isn't in good shape, but the others are very nice.
List of others I have:
Pac Man
Stellar Track
Steeplechase
Mega Force
Skeet Shoot
Spacechase
River Raid
Moonsweeper
Star Voyager
Moonsweeper is hard, but also very nice and colorful, I think you'd like it too.
You have any extras for trade?

Cool! Here's my doubles so far -- anything you'd like?

Too humble! You know you're awesome!
I love the "games that defined the [platform here]" features on racketboy.com.
I actually just published a new Xbox one a week or two ago http://www.racketboy.com/retro/microsoft/xbox/games-that-defined-the-microsoft-xbox

No need to be sorry.
I think either I misunderstood what you meant, or you miscommunicated what you meant.
I thought you were referring to systems "before 8-bit" (you said "pre-8bit"), which could only be something like the first Odyssey system, which had no CPU and therefore no bit-depth or register width, and which predated all consoles that do.The last true 8-bit systems I can think of would be things like the Game Boy and Game Gear, although I'm sure somebody can throw some obscure early '90s bullshit at me like the Gamate or something. I think the last "real" 8-bit consoles would be in that late-'80s NES/SMS/7800 group. Technically, the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx actually ran on an 8-bit CPU as well, but is often thought of as 16-bit system thanks to its 16-bit dedicated graphics processor.
Several older 8-bit computer systems were repackaged into game consoles around that time, as well (Atari XEGS, C64GS, etc.) if you want to count those.
Firstly, I always opt out of the whole "generation" discussion since so many generational delineations are both arbitrary and incredibly flawed. For example, your Wikipedia link has the Channel F in both Gen 1 and Gen 2, differentiating between the "VES" and "System II" even though they're almost the exact same hardware under the hood. Furthermore, it has the likes of the Channel F and Studio II in the same generation as the Atari 5200 and Colecovision. Uh...NO.
(Wikipedia's list of "1st generation" consoles looks like the Odyssey, Fairchild, PC-50X, and a grab-bag of random dedicated consoles from around the globe. Hardly comprehensive or well-reasoned.)
Secondly, I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if I don't think you own a lot of the consoles Wikipedia describes as "1st and 2nd generation?"
(A weird thing to ask since you'd know better than I would.
)Yeah, it was kinda a lazy way of saying before 7800/NES/Master System.
And no, the 2600 is the oldest thing I currently have

-
I have a spare Joust if you want it. I say it's another good one.
That's very generous of you! Do you have a BST list or anything in case we want to combine? I'd hate to have you spend postage for just the one cart

-
Joust is a must-own. Fantastic Voyage is a great hidden gem IMO.

I'm not real big on the other three, but they're nevertheless well-done games. You may like them more than I do.
FWIW Private Eye is a very impressive title, but complex and not particularly intuitive--definitely one of those "read the manual" games.
Pengo just doesn't click for me. I thought Beany Bopper was okay, if not especially memorable. Great to know -- this is very helpful -- thanks!
-
For what it's worth, these are ones I had on my wishlist for a while back -- are any of them just as good if not better than the ones in the summary above that don't have asterisks by them?
Pengo
Beany Bopper
Private Eye
Fantastic Voyage
Joust
H.E.R.O. was also on the list, but you guys recommended it a few times

-
"Pre 8-bit?"
Not to derail into a whole thing about "bitness" but every programmable console since the Channel F was 8-bit.(*waits for somebody to jump in with, "nuh-uh, some of the Microvision carts had 4-bit onboard processors!"*)
And anyway, the more you dig into the Atari's library, you'll find some very strange titles. Gotta remember, it was the Wild West of game design back then.
Lol ok -- I thought that was risk to word it that way. I guess I thought the Atari 7800 was the line for 8 bit. Sorry.
So would you just say that I don't have a lot with 1st and 2nd generation consoles? (per wikipedia)

-
Isn't Pole Position II for the 7800?
Other than that, nice collection, Yars is good. Love that game.
That's very well could be. I bet it's one of my boxed ones that are next to my 2600 boxes

-
What games you got so far? Do you want to play with people, or mostly solo? Do you have any special controllers like keypads, paddles, or a driving controller?
2600 may not be a powerhouse (ha!) But it certainly has a wide range of great games.
I didn't want to list all of what I had originally because I didn't want that to limit or skew the recommendations too much

I probably play mostly alone, but I am up for two player games. I'd love to have some to share with my wife and kids if nothing else.
I think I have some paddles, but that's about it. I am up for picking up extra controller, so just inform me of what is worthwhile but required

If there's ones I have that I should focus on, that's helpful -- that's half of why I'm asking -- to know what to start on. When you buy a bunch of games in a lot, it's hard to know what to devote time to. Also, I'd like to know what other essentials I should be on the lookout for when I see them in a shop or in a group.
I think I tend to go towards shooters and arcade-like titles that are puzzle/platform types. I also like games that are just plain interesting and somewhat unique. I realize in the pre-8bit, "unique" may be hard to come by, but I think you get the idea.
Here's what I have so far:

Great! I have all three of those: Demon Attack, Atlantis, and Cosmic Ark
For Activision, I think I ones like Barnstorming, Kaboom, River Raid, and Pitfall -- which others come to mind?
Thanks!

Hi Everyone
I've been into retro gaming for a couple decades, but being born in 1980, I had limited exposure to the 2600 (my older cousin had one, but that was about it) and I leaned more towards the NES/Genesis and the forward.
In more recent history, I have been accumulating some Atari goodness. I have about 70 bare carts, 10 boxed, and a couple sealed.
Anyway.... for somebody that appreciates classic gaming, but is coming in rather fresh to the platform, what 20 or 30 games would you recommend as essentials in terms of gameplay and/or showing off what the system is capable of. I'd probably stay away from modern homebrew for now, but if you want to throw in some honorable mentions, that's cool

Thanks for your time!
-
Oh wow that is SO cool. thanks for sharing!
-
Very cool! I wonder how much cartridge storage that took up. Kinda reminds me of how I was awed by the Sonic CD intro (although that also had the CD-audio). When that came out I almost passed out from excitement. One of my friends had it hooked up to his good speaker system and it felt unreal at the time -- like the future was happening

-
ERMAGERD the Racketboy is here and posting! Averaging one post on AtariAge per year!! I love your site, but you should hang out here more often.
haha -- I should! I was actually pretty absent from my own forum for a lot of the last few years and I'm getting back into the scene and getting active writing (I just pushed out a new site design this month too).
But I'll admit you guys are so on top of your game here, I feel a little inadequate talking about Atari stuff here. I'm learning

-
I'm getting the cables from HDRetrovision:
http://www.hdretrovision.com/saturn/
And then running through my Denon receiver that will convert to HDMI. Haven't got it hooked up yet, but I've heard good things about them and I've liked my receiver's performance so far.
