I literally just responded to a bunch of comments there, though I usually say "Why Bother?"...So is it just certain articles then?  I got a message a few times about a network error, but a few seconds later my comment would appear...

The ones i seen with comments off are about a race car driver. 
Probably why Twitter is so popular. So many other sites have disabled comments.

You mean the race car driver thing with the made up bull sh*t noose story...yeah, it turned out to be a door rope that's been there forever, and no one could have known who would be using the garage bay in the first place.. they will do anything to get attention and tear the world apart.. just like that other crap where the dude made his own noose and wore it for attention lying about just about anything to get on the news. The loser set the whole thing up himself. Useful idiots all fall in line... good luck ever seeing a retraction or prosecution of these nudges either...
