My newest sealed aquisitions!
frenchman replied to iwan-iwanowitsch-goratschin's topic in Atari 2600
So are they reproductions like the Music Machine (I will have hopefully soon, thanks to CPUWizz), or do you have a source where to buy those Avalon Hill games from? Sealed or no sealed is irrelevant. -
Things you were jealous for in other 8-bit computers
frenchman replied to wood_jl's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Those are not very good examples, Elite sucks big time on C64 but is easy possible on Atari XL, see Mercenary (again, the C64 version or Mercenary is worse than the Atari XL version). Impossible Mission is out on an Atari 8 bit machine already. Pirates would run on Atari XL. -

About the huge support of the other 2: C64, Spectrum. Of course, that also means they got 70% more trash games than Atari XL, especially from England. -

I wasn't so much jeloeus of the huge support Apple and C64 and Spectrum (in UK) received. I was annoyed that the games were hard to find in France, even games for Atari XL. -
I could ask the same question about all the anti-Commodore demos on A8. Similar things do not exist on C64 even though there are far more C64 demos. And besides that, what are you, 5 years old?
-
Basically a Spelling mistake then.

his Unimex Copy Cart recently sold on ebay for Euro 14.00, now what I want to know is: Is it a Leer Cassette or a Lehr Cassette? Leer would be 'empty', Lehr (as seen on the box) would be 'teaching'. Who's the Unimex expert here?
-
I'm just reading these C64 vs threads, and it makes me think. Why do the C64 users come here to an Atari site to show off? Do they and their machine have an inferior complex?

Best games of all time (any system)
frenchman replied to Galactus's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I looked on Kevincal list again, and to me, the first 10 games (minus the FF VII), are actually the same 'type of game', not very hardcore actually. -

That was what I meant, surely 'hardcore gamers' play games with depth, eg Civilization, Might and Magic 2, M.U.L.E., Ultima games (not the stupid console ports),Heart of Africa, The Bard's Tale III, Zak McKraken, Wizards Crown, The Castle of Dr Creep, Spelunker, even original platform games like Loderunner or Jumpman, Infocom games. Sort of Sonic and Mario, they are easy playable, for 10 minutes type of games, nothing more. Maybe Digital Press has some weird 'hardcore players' indeed, maybe they haven't heard of these games. -

The Super Mario Bros games are amusing and quite entertaining, but classify them as 'the best games'? Hardly. -
Oh I wish I had one, the Euro release was called VideoPac and I think we got some more games than the USA. Is that correct?

Kids and video games don't mix.

Your favorite non-Atari, non-Activision & non-Imagic game
frenchman replied to atari2600land's topic in Atari 2600
As already mentioned in the other thread, Ghost Manor is one of my favorites, and I also love Super Cobra and Amidar. -
That doesn't make sense somehow, it's like 'I don't watch TV because all programs are bad'. How would you know? Anyhow, Ghost Manor is an excellent game, mixture of catching, shooting, searching, fighting/rescue. I can ace the game on fastest/darkest level. Sex selection, that was an awesome feature back in the days. Spike's Peak, I loved the graphics too, as moycon already mentioned. The eagle looks very well drawn, and getting to the top of the mountain cartainly was a challenge. Sir Lancelot, like most people said, very good Joust clone, but better with the Invisible Invincibles at the later levels. And wasn't it fun just to let the princess drown once in a while? Robin Hood was a bit of a let down, graphically a mess, but I did enjoy that game very much too. Artillery Duel, not much fun playing alone :-( Chuck Norris Superkicks. I guess it was an early attempt of a scrolling fighter, it probably invented the somesault-kick, but for me it was a boring title, not played very often. Tormac and Motocross I'm still hunting out, so I cannot comment. All in all, the double -ender library from Xonox did deliver.

I have seen it on ebay here searching for VCS games: http://cgi.ebay.de/ATARI-HISTORY-STELLA-AT...p3286.m63.l1177

pongmuseum officially opened to the public!
frenchman replied to pongmuseum's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Because it doesn't have "raster video equipment" as a display (a TV set, monitor, etc.) it's been said that it does not qualify as a real "video game. But it can classify as a 'real' computer game. TV screens, monitor are not important, Roberta Williams (Sierra) played computer games during the 70s just using Telenet and Teletypewriters and no TV screen at all. Bill Gates did his early programming using Teletypewriters almost until the late 70s, there was no TV screen. -

Hello, That is what I mean. I read the William Higginsbotham article, and there it says: "the first computer game", which is not right. It was the FIRST tennis, aka Pong game, but NOT first computer game. The NIMROD computer was 6 years earlier. Here is a quote from your Pong site: The Beginnings of Computer Games Author: David Ahl Date: 1987 Original Source The First Computer Game The first computer game was developed in 1957 by William Higinbotham at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This is not widely known, and has not been widely written up, but I do know that some of the current games writers saw it and were influenced by it. The author David Ahl is wrong. -
I would love one too, but how do you pay? I send a PM anyway.

Very nice site, but I was just reading on Wikipidia that the FIRST computer game was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimrod_(computing), a computer specially built to play a game. And after that, in 1952, there was OXO, you might want to change the William Higgingsbotham claim of 'first computer game'. -
You have to change the either B&W switch, or one of the difficulty switches, I cannot remember as I don't have the game yet, but I do remember playing it. Try the switches.
-
Thanks for the great explanation. I think they look great on the games too. Are there anymore VCS games with graphic lines like that?
-
Hello, I am new to the Atari 2600 and I just recently received Super Cobra and Amidar. I was wondering why the graphics in these two games are different to other 2600 graphics, the graphics in these two games are like lines. Are those vector graphics?
