  3. Well, Matthew Smith says that he was a big fan of Bill Hogue (Retro Gamer magazine), but you're right, Manic Miner is very poor compared to Miner 2049er. But like you said, in the USA people just carried on with Apple ][ once VCS lost its foothold. And in Europe there was no crash anyway, people already used Spectrums and C64 in UK, and C64, A8 in Germany, and Thompsons in France. As for Pong there was already a VG crash in 77 in the USA: In 1977, manufacturers of older, obsolete consoles and Pong clones sold their systems at a loss to clear stock, creating a glut in the market and causing Fairchild and RCA to abandon their game consoles. Only Atari and Magnavox stayed in the home console market.

Actually, we don't... no more than Atarians take the 8,000 plus total at AtariMania as an actual count of titles because it contains multiple entries for the same game, homebrew, Boulder Dash levels, missing titles and so on as well. At most it can demonstrate that there were more C64 than A8 games, but after that... Yes, Andym00 does believe so indeed.

Of course, C64 users see this and go, way hey 20600 games released for C64, COOOOL!
  10. Don't be so fooled by GB64 20.000+ titles. Take away the 1000s of selfmade screens/games from stuff like Boulder Dash Construction Kit titles (they are numerous on GB64, not just with 'Boulder Dash' in the heading, you gotta dig deep), PCS titles, Lode Runner screens, SEUCK games, type in listings from German/US/UKmagazines, homemade unreleased stuff, it'll come closer to 15.000 titles most likely even less
  11. SMS came before NES in UK. SMS did quite well due to Sega's excellent advertising (TV, plug me into a Sega), and Mean Machines/C&VG promoting SMS games. SMS games were approx 29.99, and when NES came ashore, games retailed for 49.99. Quite a difference. That is why the NES failed in UK (Europe actually). Also, most UK software houses where at the time not able to purchase into a publishing contract with Nintendo. Sega was more open minded, as many UK publishing houses produced games for the SMS, as a matter of fact the SMS did better in UK/Europe than in US/Japan. The only Japan-made system which has a bigger Europe software range than a US/Japan one. VCS games sold for 29.99 in UK in the early 80s. people purchased those, and when the Spectrum came along with those awful 2.99 cassette titles, computers did take over. Spectrum came first in the UK computer wars, C64 second, but only due to UK software houses being able producing and selling cheap tape games, almost no C64 cartridge games ever sold in UK (not talking about C64GS carts), they would have been approx 49.99 too (Activision/Broderbound/Fisher Price/Spinnaker/Sierra or any other USA publishing house who made C64 carts), and as I mentioned earlier C64 had over 300 carts during its early lifetime. Mind you, C64 International Soccer on cart sold very well in Europe, that was one exception. 1986 ST became very popular with software houses, and when the A500 came along, it was Spec/C64/A500/ST....SMS...further along...the rest. PC Engine was popular for a short while due to Julian Rignall praising the console in C&VG over and over and over....and it was never even released in UK, but it was a good selling import machine.

  13. Lots of UK people don't really know many USA made games, Synapse made many classics for Apple 2, A8, and C64. Or ever played any Sirius classics? eg Blade of Blackpool, Gruds in Space? Or Broderbund? Mask of the sun, The Serpent's Star, The castles of Dr Creep? Thing about Dimension X is, it has the generic A8/C64 loading instructions, and when C64 users ask for a Dimension X version for their machine, Synapse said 'sorry, can't be done, the C64 cannot cope with the speed as the A8 can. True story
  14. We keep mentioning this here, but the C64ers don't seem to understand this. (But I also mentioned that good titles on A8 still kept coming on A8, eg Mindscape The Halley Project, Infocom titles and SSI)

I would just like to say that as i own originals for pretty much the entire microprose catalogue from 83-92, i actually looked up the atari releases by this company on atarimania. and saw that they stopped producing games with conflict in vietnam (which is decent dont get me wrong). however u quote this company like they were some kind of yardstick for sw whereas in actual fact NONE of the stuff which actually made them great ever saw the light of day on the a8. no gunship no pirates no airborne ranger no project stealth fighter the REALLY good stuff that made it to the a8 was basically Silent Service and Kennedy Approach and i hate to burst your bubble but silent service looks really shoddy compared to the 64 one. flame away Steve No bubble burst as I own the game on C128 but yes, Microprose should have continued on A8 a while longer than they did (and you are right, Vietnam is an excellent game). flame on Sherali
  19. Panther yeah it's ok on A8, but not great on C64 either, plays a bit ropey for my taste. As for the decline of quality of A8 software? Dunno, SSI, Infocom, Microprose, etc, they released excellent games on A8 until they suddenly stopped doing A8 softs. Sons of Liberty is an excellent final game for A8 from SSI. Infocoms Plundered Hearts again a great final game for A8. Origin's Ultima V, excellent last game from the RPG guys for A8. Pondering about MAX is a great USA produced game for the A8 in the very late 80s/early 90s. Can't complain.
  20. It's one of those 'no one can answer that truly' questions, isn't it. You gotta smell console/computer games of all systems before you can give a comparative answer.
