I had tried the test with just 4-8 up and same thing. The SRAM chip is IS61WV25616EDBLL-10TLI. I looked at the comparison again and see that the failures are in three distinct blocks. It kind of sounds like its the glitchy control panel that others have noted. At this point I'm just going to go on the consideration that this expensive little video converter doesn't work and find something different to connect.

I really need to merge my sdram code, then that could be an option for those with broken sram. Two weeks now until I start a new job and I think all my time will be swallowed with post-move jobs. Perhaps I'll grab a day or two...

I did a quick test and the two files were different. I'll try it again when I get back home. It took me a while to find a program that would create a 512K text file.

This is bad :(Could you please try writing/reading the SRAM with the control panel from the new DE1 CD?I just compared the datasheets of the old and new SRAMs but couldn't find anything obvious. Actually, the datasheet of the new IS61WV25616EDBLL chip says it can be used as a drop-in replacement for other standard SRAMs. I'd say the bad batch theory is more and more likely.so long,Hias

Ok, got my DE1 board today and it too came with a EDBLL sram chip. Well same results as my last board.

Well, I'm sending my DE1 back to Digi-Key and they're going to run some test to determine if there is anything wrong with the board. In the mean time I ordered another DE1 while Digi decides how to handle this. I hope I have better luck with the next board.

Edit: I didn't have much luck with the control panel Board Test. Both RAM test fail and the Flash Test times out.

 

Not sure if this means anything but I'm able to flash a MSX (de1_170513.sof) just fine.

@Hias, here are my results from your suggested test using experment_20130813.sof.

 

SW4-8 up displays memo pad.

 

 

SW 5&6 down with a fresh flash.

 

 

SW 5 up and SW 6 down.

Hi!

 

 

Be sure to set sw7 to up, especially if you have a new DE1 board and enable Turbo Mode (sw9).

 

The newer boards use slower flash chips. Using 2 waitstates (sw7 down) worked on my board with turbo mode off, but if I enabled turbo mode I'd also get crashes, black screens and lockups unless I set sw7 up.

 

Try with a "safe" default setup: sw7 up, sw8/4 according to your desired video config, all other switches down.

Thanks for the reply. It helped a little, now I can see something on the screen without doing so many resets. But it's still garbage, black, or green frozen screen.

I ran out of time and couldn't edit the above post.

The pic in above post #172 is of the latest sof file. With switches sw9, 8, 4, and 1 up and pressing reset many time that is the pic of my screen.

Almost always a black screen or frozen w garbage.

Got it flashed but I only see a blank screen (black). One time I think I heard test tones while I was messing around pressing keys on the keyboard. I went back tried some of the earlier sof files 20130813 and 22 and I got a screen after pressing key2 many times. But the screen was full of garbage.

Could someone explain how to add the basic and OS ROM to the DE1? I was able to flash the sof file but don't see any way to flash the ROMs.
