This is a very nice video mod. I was wondering if there is anyone willing to do the mod on my 800xl (NTSC) for a fee of course. I don't trust my abilities when it comes to electronics. Or is there somewhere I can buy an 800XL with the video mod already done? Thanks, Mark

Help Atari 800 Powers up but KB does not work.
NML32 replied to NML32's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Contrary to the XL-series, the 800's keyboard does not contain a mylar sheet but is built up from real switches on a PCB. Reseating the connector on the rainbow flatcable leading from this PCB to the mainboard might be a way to get it going again. If the computer has been stored in a damp garage, it might also be a case of corroded contacts inside the switches. The error description suggests this is the case. Contact spray should be able to deal with this. Carefully pry off the keycaps (after writing down the layout of the keyboard) to gain access to the actual switches and spray a little bit on the contacts. After reassembly press the keys repeatedly to wipe off any remaining oxidation. They should start to work now. If that doesn't get the keyboard working, resoldering its PCB is the only remaining option. re-atari I took the back off of the KB about 16 tiny screws and it appeared that the keys pressed a little rubber pad aginst what looks like a mylar contact. -
This is cool. Maybe this just needs a good menu system- and if it was a calander based menu system, That would suite my needs and shouldn't be too hard to do in BASIC. Has or is anyone doing any updates to the program?

Help Atari 800 Powers up but KB does not work.
NML32 replied to NML32's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
It has freed up some but there are so many more to go. I think I am going to buy a new one. I found one at B&C for $20.00 new so I think I will go this route. I took the keyboard apart and really didn't see a way to clean it. Thanks, Mark -
Help Atari 800 Powers up but KB does not work.
NML32 replied to NML32's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Update: It seems some of the keys are starting to free up. So far the following keys work. 467WZO;N Is there a safe and easy way to clean the KB. -Mark -
Help, I got a Atari 800 from Craig's list with some other Atari stuff. The 800 boots up to the Memo Pad but none of the KB keys work. Do you think a new KB would fix the problem or could it be the board the KB plugs in to? You may have read my other post about my 800, I plugged the wrong PS in and broke it. Since then I ordered a new 800 PWR board and I am back to the way it was. The KB didn't work before my PS mishap. It powers up, I get vedio, I hear sound, Cartridge slot works. Just no typing.

Is there any use in having a modem? I guess what I am asking is are they still being used if so what for? Are there any BBS still around and in use? Any possibility of getting on the Internet with one, lol I guess not. But I am curious if anyone is still using one and what for. Thanks, Mark

I got the Atari Writer cartridge to finally work with the SDrive Nuxx. I created a blank ATR, took a while to figure this out still did not work. Then for the heck of it I made a blank ATR with the boot files now it works. I'm not sure why but I guess Atari Writer need to see the boot files on the floppy image. Before that the Atari Writer boot screen would turn from blue to red and just stay in the boot loop.

That is great, nice. Will the Atari 8bit ever be able to do something like this? Is anyone making a network card for the Atari.

Thanks This may be beyond my abilities but I am going to try to fix my 800. Maybe I can find a local repair shop that may be able to help.

Nice looking program. Only problem it doesn't accept 4 digit year. lol not Y2K compliant. Still having fun playing around with it. I'm just stuck in the 90's.

The kids are finally showing some interest in my Atari 8 bit computers. I thought if I could find some sort of Diary program for the girls that would spark more of an interest. Thanks, Mark

I'm so mad at myself right now. I just bought an Atari 800 along with a 5200 and some other odds and ends off of Craig's list. To make a long story short I grabbed the 5200 ps and now the 800 will not turn on anymore. This is no surprise to me, I am wondering if there is anything I can do to fix it? Also before I used the wrong ps it booted up but the KB did not work. That is another issue. Are there any fuses in the 800?

It was a good try but nada. Here is Best's reply. Had to scrap all of the New Atari 1027 Heads we got out of the Atari Parts warehouse when we cleared them out Mark. We found that all of the New 1027 rubber Head Letter bands all started to fall apart and parts/letters starting to fall off. Regards, Bradley Koda Thanks, Mark

Sorry, I can't answer your first question, but with the second one, if that editor supports saving to another drive, could you load a blank .ATR into D2 and save there? Or, once the program is running, if it no longer needs the disk in D1, swap a blank image in for D1. You'd do this by assigning the word editor to D1 and the blank to D2, then hit the RIGHT button so that the D2 LED is illuminated, indicating that what you had mounted in D2 in the control app is now available as D1. (Not to tell you to RTFM, but you might want to check out this PDF, specifically the bottom of page 1 and the top of page 2. This explains the swapping stuff, and you'll just need a blank-ish .ATR to store things on.) Thanks good info, I'll give it a try when I get home. You know the last resort is to RTFM. Thanks for pointing me to the PDF.

I'm having a problem using SDrive NUXX with the Atari Writer cartridge. Atari Writer cartridge does not see the SDrive NUXX as a storage device. Is this possible? When loading an ATX is there a way to save a file out side of the ATX image? I'm trying to use a word editor that is run in an ATX and I would like to save outside of the image. Is this possible? I'm new so I hope I explained what I'm trying to do well enough. Thanks, Mark
