7800 Expansion Module (XM) hardware & game details - 7/8/2016
Lendorien replied to Lendorien's topic in Atari 7800
Hey all. I moved in March, so I sent Curt an e-mail with my information and he changed my address upon my request. I did this back in March. I'm sure if you contact him, he'll take care of it for you. -
I bought a desoldering iron when I replaced all the buttons on mine. A desoldering iron is a soldering iron with a squeezebulb you use to suck the solder out of the trace holes. It's pretty effective. I strongly suggest that if you're going to do it, you get one of these. combined with desoldering braid, you'll have everything you need to remove the old switches without overheating your board. It's useful for when you do other modding projects as well. It's not actually that hard to replace the switches, in fact it was probably one of the first electronics projects I took on. My 7800 gets a lot of use and the switches are rock solid now.

GB Printer in need of paper - Any Suggestions
Lendorien replied to Classic Pac's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Isn't the GB printer just a thermal printer (Similar to the tech used for many credit card receipt printers)? I'd assume that any correctly sized thermal paper would work in it. Thermal receipt paper is easily available at your local office supply store, though I'm not sure the size the GBP uses. Aha. Check out the Wikipedia article. Someone states that 1.5" receipt paper will work in it. -
Chip Tune + Nine Inch Nails = Awesome
Lendorien replied to PeculiarSatyr's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Ok, I have to say that this is absolutely amazing. I have only heard a couple of the songs ont hat particular album, so I had to look a couple up, but I have to admit that putting together a one to one album that sounds as good as this one does using vintage hardware is pretty amazing. -
Mod Log for 7800 with BEST ELECTRONICS Euro OS and LittleJoe Video Mod
Lendorien replied to atari2atari's topic in Atari 7800
Great mod log there! Done the longhorn/batari mod myself a couple years ago. You document it well. It was a bit of a bother to do, but well worth it. I have long debated doing the metal plate cover replacement, but just haven't cared enough to actually spend the money. -
My Colecovision estate sale find ended up being a bust. The machine would slowly fritz out when it warmed up. I couldn't figure out why and replacing the power switch and power supply did no good. I had a collection of games, but no console. So I went without for about a year. Until about 2 weeks ago. I found a beat-up cv with about 17 games at Mega Media Exchange for 55 dollars. I was a little boggled by the price, but went for it. I was able to switch the guts out into my old, better looking case and it works like a beaut. Plus I added 11 games to my collection. I'm so jazzed that I got the thing so cheaply and have such a large collection of games to browse through. Among the new games I got were: Burgertime Cabbage Patch Kids Front Line Frogger Mr. Do. Roc'n'Rope Space Panic Rocky Super Action Boxing Star Trek: Strategic Operations Time Pilot Zaxxon Burgertime is of course a favorite, but Space Panic is the one that I've played the most. It reminds me of a gameboy game I played a lot of in high school call Helinko Alien. I don't quite get Zaxxon and of course Cabbage Patch Kids is almost as bad as Smurfs. Rocky's boxing was more impressive than I expected. Arcade Quality graphics indeed! Anyway, had to share. Any suggestions on games to get that won't cost the farm? My current collection: http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/collection.pl?name=Lendorien&folder=Collection&console=|024|®ion=U Cheers!

7800 Expansion Module (XM) hardware & game details - 7/8/2016
Lendorien replied to Lendorien's topic in Atari 7800
Not much progress of late with the Atari book coming out. Mr Vendel has said that once that is done, he'll be workign on getting the XM built and snet out. The impression I have gotten is that the boards are pretty much finalized now. They just need to be manufactured and mailed. -
Well, here are some that I always loved, even though I'm late on my 2 cents: Tetris - This game sold loads of Gameboys to adults and now as an adult, it's the game I play most on the thing. Kirby's Dreamland - Easily one of my favorate GB platformers. It has great music and fun gameplay. Super Mario Land 2 - With this game they took the SNES SMW to the gameboy with similiar style worlds and gameplay. It has fun gameplay elements that were innovative for a super mario game. Still one fo my favorites. Super Mario Land 3: Wario land - This game focuses on Wario for the first time and it's a great entry to boot. Like its predicessor, it has fun and innovate gameplay elements. Link's Awakening - Gotta chime in with others here. This game had me playing gameboy for a week solid after I bought it. S-11 - This modest Shmup has some of the best techno themed music available for a gameboy game Hamtaro: Ham-hams unite - this silly little platformer/rpg based on the Hamtaro franchise is silly but with varied levels and fun gameplay

Work In Progress: "Bentley Bear: Crystal Quest"
Lendorien replied to PacManPlus's topic in Atari 7800
This game looks amazing. It's probably one of the best looking plat-formers for the 7800 so far. It plays really well too. PacMan Red has done an outstanding job with the sprites. I wonder if it might be cool to have an intro "story" screen that explains the goal of the game, perhaps as part of the attract mode. A lot of games do this in the manual, but doing it in-game might add polish to the game. For bonus points, you could do screenies with text captions. A thought, though certainly you have a lot of stuff you're stuffing into that 144k. -
I'd pose for a photo with my wife. It'd be a hoot.

Wow. Now I hope someone DOES do a Rampage Hack.

Huge Video Game Collection sold on E-bay for 1.2 mil
Lendorien replied to Lendorien's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Maybe he was hoping you'd buy his. I suspect someone sham bought it from him and the auction was cancelled. Granted, 20 full complete sets is amazing, but 1.2 million? Really? -
Came across this article today. Holy moly! Will he get the money? Doubtful. I wonder how much he spent to acquire all that stuff. Must have some money to put out to get everything NIB. www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-enormous-video-game-ebay-20120709,0,6539757.story And here is the auction. Looks like it may not have sold after all. eBay Auction -- Item Number: 300736052926

You know, when looking for stuff like this, you can just use the search function. It's up at the upper right corner of the page.

7800 Expansion Module (XM) hardware & game details - 7/8/2016
Lendorien replied to Lendorien's topic in Atari 7800
The short of it is, games that are listed as having been released, are available either on Atariage's store, or by contacting their authors. I have links to the threads related to them on most games. Games may be released int he store once the XM is released, but no guarantee. -
An earlier post mentions the VMUs. Can anyone else confirm that the things eat batteries? It seems like you buy new batteries and they're used up in a week, even with the power turned off. The only solution is to remove the batteries when not in use. Me personally, I modded one of mine with an old USB cable to power it through a USB port. I found the mod of the Ben Heck forum. The photo on the Ben Heck forum looks awful. My mod is much cleaner. I cut a small hole in the bottom of the VMU where the wrist cord would have been run, threaded the usb cable through and tied off the cord in a knot so it wouldn't slide through. The USB wires are screwed down beneath the power leads on the VMU. No soldering required. The end result is a very clean look and surprisingly enough it works quite well off a USB port. Plus, no more batteries. Ok, it's not as portable, but given the way they eat batteries, they weren't that portable anyway. http://benheck.com/f...php?f=6&t=34552 I lovve the Dreamcast too. I'm running through TimeStalkers at the moment. The Dreamcast really is a system that didn't get the love it deserved. Sega really screwed up withg their lack of focus leadership and infighting.

This is a sweet setup. I might have to make me something like this. The shelving would not be that dificult to make. My question is this, how does he have all of the systems hooked up? With that many systems, you'd have to have a bank of game switches. I can't see any obvious ones in the photos, though it looks like he has a pretty expensive stereo system there that undoubtedly upconverts his signals to HDMI. I have a pelican game switch that works well for me as a game switch, that I then put through a stereo, but there are only 8 ports and it's a manual switch. What other switch solutions might one use for this? I suppose a custom-made gameswitch would be the ultimate solution. You could make it with as many ports as you like, but from looking into makign one myself, it's an involved job because you have to bult each port circuitry individually. Power is another concern. With that many systems plugged in, you'd have a lot of idling power adapters. You'd have to set up a proper a safe power solution than just a bunch of power strips. Optimally, you'd want a power strip that shut down plugs when it sensed when where wasn't any draw. You also have the concern of causing ground loops with that many things plugged in (a ground loop might cause an audio buzz on your stereo and can be frustrating to try and solve). Also, there's the overload concern. To be safe you'd probably have to build your power solution as part of your home remodel project with a cirguit breaker devoted just to your game wall. Electricians rejoice.

Ok, I totally am going to go see this. -
rfgeneration.com is what I use. it has a pretty active community updating and adding games. It's also VERY comprehensive covering many systems and regions.

Does (did) the pack-in game matter?
Lendorien replied to DesertJets's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The answer is yes, it mattered. Maybe not as much any more, but for a few notable systems, the pack-in game helped sell the system. SMB for NES, Tetris for Gameboy, Sonic for Genesis, etc. Tetris on Gameboy is the best example. It's regularly cited as a brilliant move on Nintendo's part to bundle the game and system together. Tetris sold a lot of gameboys to adults. More recently, Kinnect and Move both had Pack-in games. I doubt either add-on would have sold well without their games. In the case of the Move, Sports Champions was a really solid game. -
It'd really be nice if this was done and ready for when the XM comes out.
-
I suppose that all depends on how easy or not it is to remove the XM. I know with my O2 Voice system if I had to remove it to play games, those games wouldn't get played. desiv From the design, it's much like the 32x or the Sega Master Power Base converter. It fits into the cartridge slot like a game would.
