  1. The mod I did was for the Gen 3. All it uses is a pair of capacitors and resistors as the video chip has SVideo capability already. Given my unsteady hand, it's entirely possible I bridged a connection. I suppose I could pop it open and look again.
  2. I did an Svideo mod on a Genesis 3 a month back. My results were similar to yours, though I think my lines are more pronounced. They sure are distracting. The vertical lines were something I was trying to figure out the reason for. Could it be the resistors? It's like something is not quite in phase as there is some hazy discoloration in text, similar but not as bad as with composite. Anyone have any suggestions? I think I may have fried the video chip a bit as for a time I was able to get no lines at all... I was playing around with the resisters I had on hand.. Perhaps I popped one.. I'm still sort of mediocre of soldering. My mod sure wasn't pretty either. Image attached. Excuse my lousy photo of my LCD tv. I did try to do the Model 1 mod, but it was my first project and I definitely DID fry the video chip on that one, and I wasted my money too as all those parts added up to about 20 bucks. I got another model 1 at Goodwill and have modded it for composite and stereo, but that SVideo mod is a bit beyond me.
  3. Oh heck. What a thing to miss out on. I would have been on the phone a minute after seeing that listing.
  4. I'm about to sit down and play some more Grandia 2 on Dreamcast. Definitely one of the more entertaining RPGs I've had the pleasure of playing. Earlier I was playing Phantasy Star on my GBA
  5. Let's see... Atari 2600 - 60 Genesis - 4 N64 - 20 NES - 6 GB - 13 GBA - 3 I'm not really a collector tho.
  6. PM sent. You should check out some local goodwills. I often see dozens sitting ont he shelves at mine. You'd have the evict thge sports games they hold, but they'd be yours for about a buck or two a piece.
  7. As a recent recruit to the console gaming community, here's my list. Atari 2600 - Probably Missile Command or Galaxian? Kaypro 2X - Ha! Ladder and Mchase! NES - SMB3 and Tetris (I bought a NES at goodwill when I saw Tetris was on the shelf too. I bought SMB3 about a day later) N64 - Zelda: OOT, Shadows of Empire or Banjo Kazooie (These three games inspired me to get one back in the day) Gameboy - Tetris, SML2 GBA - FF 1+2 and Yugioh:Eternal Duelist Soul (What can I say... they're the only two GBA games I own. Yugioh was bought because I played a pirated copy on VGBA for a while and liked it so much) Genesis - Flashback, Sonic PS1 - FF9 PS2 - FF12 + Steambot Chronicles. I originally bought it to play baseball. And for my PC? What were the must get games for me when I first got a PC? Hmmm. Zork! And all the Sierra Adventure games... Oh. And Master Of Orion.
  8. Centipede. I've played a good number of different ports for it over the years, though the first was on the Kaypro, titled, "eel." It's one of my favorite arcade games honestly. I really do need to pick up one for my 2600.
  9. I have one because I have my PS2 hooked up via component video to my LCD. Some PS1 games won't play over component video. Switching cables back and forth would be too much of a bother. It's not a bad system really.
  10. This weekend, I was at a goodwill and missed out on an xbox with two controllers for 15 bucks. One of the controllers was some strange dual handled promo controller. A hispanic fellow got it before I did. Darn. Also missed out on a PS2 steering wheel and pedals for 5 bucks. I was debating buying it when some kids came by and grabbed it. Nothing major this week.
  11. I just finished a long campaign as India in Empire: Total War. And I got the big rocket ship in Tetris game A on the NES.
  12. You migth be right on this. They have so much IP that they'll never use it all. And look at all the good brands that just disintegrated under their watch as they consolidated. Sometimes smaller is better. Sure, being a behemoth is good for money flow, but you lose focus and it becomes a numbers game. Look at all the national retailers that went the same route and ended up bankrupt. When the original people ran a company, it had vision. As soon as it corporatized and got suits in play and they expanded like crazy, they inevitably go down hill and crashed. Circuit City, Starbucks, krispy Kreme, Clairs, etc.
  13. I've been noticing that. Record head is a great store, but yeah, lot of overpriced stuff. Especially games. Not so much with music.
  14. It's the place on Greenfield by 70th. The stacks of Combats are new though. I go in about once a month. I have picked up a couple commons from them. Usually ones that I know are good games and worth it to me to spend a bit extra on. In any case, maybe they had the combats hidden til now. No idea. They had every variation of Combat cart you could dream of. Sears, Atari, picture, text, etc. I got Cosmic Creeps at a half price if you can believe it. What's the name of the place? I live in Ozaukee. Record Head in West Allis.

  16. I wouldn't expect that such a scale would be that difficult really. But I'm not sure there's a complete index of all the stuff ever made for the 2600 either. Anyone want to start making a list here?
  17. Good job, even if it is an ugly job. I would love to try this mod, but my Sega genesis modding experiences have proven to me that I really need more practice soldering before I destroy one of my Ataris.
  18. The most marvelous thing I've ever seen in a thrift store... Here in stallis, we have a record store. They buy old games, music, instruments, etc. Anyhow, I went in today to look for a Cd I thought they might have. And as I was looking, I went to their games section. I don't buy games there often cause they tend to be overpriced. 3 bucks for a common Atari game is a bit much. In any case, I was looking at their Atari stuff and burst out laughing when I saw that somehow they had gotten their hands on no less than 65 combat carts sitting on the shelf. Of course, that's not all, they were next to about 20 asteroid carts, 9 pac-mans and a good number of missile commands. A few more and you could use them for skeet shooting. Anyone wanna take bets on how long they'll sit there? On the bright side, yesterday I got a copy of Cosmic Creeps at a used bookstore for about a buck. That game is a little odd.
  19. I played it when it first came out for PC back in what... 1995? I liked it then, but it has been about 14 years since then.
  20. Blackthorne on the PC was pretty cool back int he day. A platformer. Is the GBA version a direct port?
  21. I threw int he towel on EA when mass effect crashed my operating system and forced a reformat. Couse, mentioning the Secureom DRM is opening a whole other can of worms. I won't buy EA games any more. Not without seriously, seriously thinking about it. Sports franchises are big money makers. From a business standpoint, if that's what makes you money, put your resources into it. The problem with modern games is that it isn't like the 80's any more. One guy in his basement can't make a top selling game any more. Oh, it happens on occasion, but the vast majority are high production affairs with production values verging on the cinematic. Games of that quality are expensive to make. The more expensive they are,the less innovative, because it's a better business model to go with a tested formula than go out on a limb. So dark space loses money. How much did they have to spend to make it? A whole heck of a lot. No wonder it lost money. A lot of movies end up suffering this way too. Now as for the PS3... the PS3's downfall was bluray. Sony used it as a platform to promote their disc format. It ended up being a white elephant because it made the thing cost about as much as a home computer. Traditionally, game systems haven't cost much more than 300 dollars. Sony asked for 500. If they'd come out with a version without the blu-ray drive right at the outset and sold two models, one with and one without, it's a good possibility they'd have more market share. As it is, there are rumors of a possible blu-ray minus version coming out. But if Sony did that, they'd remove one of the only things that's left to make the PS3 attractive still. It's sad really. If the PS3 fails, all we have left is the Xbox 360. Another Microsoft monopoly. And no, the Wii doesn't count because it's aimed at the casual gamer and doesn't have even close to the hardware chops of the 360. Maybe nintendo has a new console lined up for a year or two that will be compatible with the wii but be more powerful. Honestly, I think backward compatibility is the way to go for these consoles as we head into the future. It also allows you to sell older system games for longer. Anyway... I'm digressing.
  22. Out of curiosity, have you tried it? How well does it work?
  23. Here's a question. Have you or anyone else done an instruction manual for this game yet. Seems to me some of your info above would be perfect for it. S
  24. Wow. Losing that book sounds like it was pretty traumatic for you. In any case, I remember a RA I had in college. He could play Ms. Pacman on the arcade cabinet we had in the union for hours on one quarter. He said it was all about learning the paths the ghosts took.
  25. Alright. I have a multimeter... so I'm set to go.
