  1. I think this is the same person who bought one of my Donkey Kong XM carts. The package was returned with a note that he was deceased. It was very sobering.

    Man. That's rough. :(

  2. I moved about 3 years ago. I shot Curt a PM and an e-mail and he acknowledged that he'd updated my info. I'd suggest that's how one should handle it. I do still have my e-mail receipt for my purchase. I'd hang on to that if you can.

  3. There was a metal object? I didn't notice. :D

I was HUGE fan of the show, but Lynda Carter was the least Amazonian Amazon ever. At least I know I have good taste though, because I was already a fan of her when I was 4 years old. :D

  4. I'm looking forward to posting the update when the latest BIOS is ready and being tested. I think that could realistically be in a few months.

Well, I'm definitely excited to hear that. Awesome!

  5.

With some of the 'doubters', I would re-label, "relentless killjoys", intent on destroying any heart the creators had in making such a project at all costs. And not so much proven right, as they got their miserable, insufferable, dark wish of joy.

While you are right, that there has been a good bit of negativity, this project has been ongoing 5 years and counting. A lot of money was paid by the original investors, many of whom had expectations of a timely release. Yes, there has been a lot of griping and angry messages over the years, but I would say that of the people who originally paid, most have been extraordinarily patient. I can't say how many have asked for refunds, but of those who have mentioned it publicly, I can only think of a couple. I think that's a significant statement of how well regarded Curt is around here that he's been given that much leeway on this. So, while there will always be trolls, given the time frame involved, I'm surprised it hasn't been worse. He really does have the support of his investors.

Most people have no idea how close Curt was to throwing in the towel due to the negative posts. I know of at least a hand full of AA members, I've kept track, who did not pre-order the XM and have no intention of ordering it, yet were some of the most vocal critics of Curts handling of this project. What would their motive have been since they are not "victims"? DracIsBack's statement might be a bit dramatic but it's not far off track.

This project has been ongoing for 5 years and counting. Do you really think that a bit of impatience isn't warranted? The project went dark for long periods, leaving people who spent money up in the air with no confidence that it was going to be finished. And believe me, a lot of people have asked for more openness over the years to help AVOID the negativity. I was one of them.

The behavior of the mob of haters was wrong and I'm sorry Mr. Vendel was hurt by it. But it is something of a result of the lack of communication. A lot of the drama could have been avoided by better public relations and time management. We can rightly chastise the community for being shitty, but this is not something that is solely the community's fault here. And further drama can be avoided by not making that mistake moving forward.

To this, I have to thank Tep and the others who've now jumped in to help, but also for being open about it. I would hope that those who have been negative will back off from hereon out and that we can try to be excited for the forward momentum there is now. There are enough of us who are looking forward to the XM that surely we can get a cheer squad going to keep them from burning out.

  6. Tep should have the time to do as he pleases and not held responsible for the delays when he was not part of the team.

Regarding the value of the XM I am not sure if the thing comes out 10Y from now if people would think the same way but to each his own.

I venture that until there's the "hope" that it's gonna come out in the next 6 months or so at worse then it's hard to let it go.

Joke aside, if there was a clear announcement to not expect anything out for another say 3Y, I am not sure how many people would stick to it.

Then again it appears some have stuck to it for 5Y already so what do I know, but a little devil inside me is saying that if 5Y ago (or whenever it began) it was announced that the project would take say 6Y to complete then many would not have been onboard (put down money for a 6Y venture is not something many people just do).

I agree on Tep. He's awesome for being willing to jump in and pick up the pieces of the Bios like he has. It can't be easy, especially since it sounds like he has to reinvent the wheel. He's a Rockstar in my book!

As far as the time, as I have said, it could have been avoided. I think that communication does more than keep customers informed. It also keeps the person doing the project on task. If you have to release information about what you're doing every week, you're going to have incentive to have information to release. And it'll also give you incentive not to shove it to the back of your workbench because you have all these people paying attention and providing positive feedback to what you're doing. So the end result is happier informed customers and a more timely project with the bonus of momentum that inspires other people to work to make things to coincide with the project.

All that said, from all accounts, Curt has some very serious health issues. And as someone who has family members with such, I Know how hard it is to get things done when you're not well. And it IS a hobby afterall. That should be kept in mind.

Still, real money exchanged hands and it's been 5 years. And you make a valid point about expectations. AtariAge members have been pretty forgiving overall if you ask me, occasional griping aside.

I still look forward to seeing and using it when it's done.

    Some people for sure.

Some people have been jackasses about the thing from the moment it was announced and wouldn't let it go.

I don't disagree. The crap at the beginning wasn't fair, nor is the stuff about whether the XM is worth it. If you don't see a value, don't buy it.

Hah, I remember my dad would absolutely hate the guy in the cutscenes. Personally I always thought it was just cheesy. Also, I do think the controller ports in the controller are nice. While they're not the best way, they at least don't make you need a multitap, like you said. The only issue I ever had was playing some of the multiplayer games, when one person would get mad, just to get at the other players, they'd unplug all the other controllers from theirs so we'd always stick the one who would get mad the easiest on the end  And yeah, the headphone jack in the controller is cool. Most of the time nobody else in the house would want to hear the game, so it was nice to be able to turn the TV down and just slap some earbuds in the controller. Some of these features are still kind-of cool to me, and I have to admit, they sure make the system unique.

That guy really WAS obnoxious. But the had to have FMV in there somewhere, right? Ha!

The earphone Jacks were a clever idea. I really wish modern consoles did that. I truly do. I'd get told to turn down the TV to practically a non-decipher able whisper by my wife a lot less.

  9. The funny thing is this frustration that is getting people uncomfortable, is something that was completely avoidable. Even if it took 5+ years, regular honest communication would have done wonders for people's attitudes about it.

I don't think that it is too much for people to expect regular updates for a something they paid for or for them to be frustrated at the lack of them. The frustration has been earned. It may be annoying, but it is what it is.

And with that said, we should thank Tep for being open and willing to provide updates on his part of the project at the pace he has. It's a nice change and appreciated. I mean that sincerely.

  10. I had really hoped to be farther along at this point but I only have time to work on the BIOS over lunch. I'm super busy with work and home life during the rest of the day.

One big thing that has slowed this project down is Groovybee's refusal to give us the code he's written for the XM and refusal to respond to our PM's. He's been a big fucking baby since I started working on it, which was only necessary because he stopped working on it. He seems to have the attention span of a kindergardner. So instead of just finishing up the BIOS, I have had to spend time figuring out the system requirements by reading thru long e-mail chains between Curt and the developers as well as disassembling the BIOS ROM. It's interesting how he is so posessive of the BIOS after borrowing so heavily from RMT, HSC BIOS and 7800 PAL BIOS. But I suppose that has made it easier to trace his code. ;)

Anyhow, I'll try to give updates from time to time. Don't hesitate to ask for one if it's been a while.

Well I have to say that this was enlightening. It explains part of why we've been sitting here waiting so long. Groovybee bailed like 2 years ago. Whether he's having personality conflicts with Curt or whatever, it would be a nice gesture to the community for him to be kind and help you out. I don't know what happened but the truth is, people relied on his work and forcing you to start from scratch just sucks, personality or creative differences or not.

THAT SAID, Communication on this project has always been terrible. Even regular monthly updates would be welcome over the prolonged silence for half a year at a time. People paid real money. I think it's only just that they know what's going on, even if it's bad news.

I'm willing to wait for mine though. I paid for it 5 years ago. From my point of view, the money is already gone, so I'm not as invested in if it ends up being vapourware. (It's been so long that the money really has ceased to be an issue for me). I had fun watching it trundle along and go off the tracks. I'll have more fun if and when I finally get it.

  11. Some of my favorites were the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series, Test Drive series, etc.. Can't remember what else I played, it's been a while and all the ps2 games I used to have got stolen.

The Tony Hawk games have always been fun.

I have a collection of around 100 games with mix of RPGS and action games. I tend to gravitate to quirky titles.

Anyone else a fan of the Dark Cloud games?

It was such a great system though I mean, for every Way of The Warrior there was a good game that made up for it, and I cant think of a single bad game EA put out for the system I would still take 3DO Madden over any incarnation of the franchise in the time since.

What a great story. Do you still have it? I was on of those kids who never had video games growing up. My first console was the N64 around 1998 that I bought myself in college. About 10 years later, I had a horrible breakup and to keep sane, started collecting to keep myself busy. The 3DO was found on one of my thrifting trips. I know I saw a goldstar unit once but at the time didn't know what it was.

  13. I think my Love for the 3DO comes from 4 games. Jurassic Park Interactive, Casper, Night Trap (yes, it was on Sega Cd first) and trip'd.

I have played the 3DO version of Star Control and the Pc one as well. The Urquan Masters public domain version is really the best of both worlds

I think that the controller daisy chaining was an odd choice. It is awkward to have that extra cord sticking out the back.

But the bigger issue for me is the lack of save game space. The only has 32K for sabed games. For a collector, this is especially annoying. There really is only room for 5 or so games at most. There was a memory expansion module that fits in to the expansion port.

The FZ-EM256 was only released in Japan and adds an additional 256k of save game space. It was released at the end of the 3DOs life so it's fairly hard to come by.

  14. I never understood the Daisy Chain controller thing. How hard would it have been to have multiple controller ports. With the thing already costing 700 bucks, what was one more db9 port?

I've always wondered how the 3do would have fared int he long term if it hadn't been so expensive upon its release. It had a CPU that was less powerful than the Playstation's. but it had graphics coprocessors that made up for it. I'm not sure the system was ever taxed by games pushing the limits like some of the others were.

  15. So, about 5 years ago, I was shopping a goodwill and I discovered a 3DO FZ-10 sitting on their tech shelves. I had a vague notion of what it was, so bought it along with four games they had sitting in the DVD section. I later... ahem acquired copies of a few other games, Night Trap being my favorite (the 3DO version has the best resolution), just for how silly it is. Thus began my love affair with the 3DO, the console who's market strategy was brilliantly unique and an utter failure and had so much potential but was out at precisely the wrong time.

Let's talk about the 3DO. Do we have any early adopters here? How about so 3DO memories or ruminations?

I find 3DO's history to be quite interesting.

  16. Well, what have I completed so far this year? Not much.

    1) Akiba's Trip for PS3 - I was a little surprised at how short it was. I am not really versed in otaku culture and know nothing about Akibara, so I found it only mildly interesting.

    2) Chibi Robo for Gamecube. - Such a quirky game. You spend half of it using a toothbrush to clean up stains on the floor.

I'm debating taking my collection of 90 NES games and trying to beat them one by one. I'm not sure how capable I would be at that. Alphabetically, 1943 is on the list. Time to break out the NES Advantage. Haha.
