What's the deal with Mega Man?
Lendorien replied to mikey.shake's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I agree with gorfcadet. Look at smb3. It was a huge hit and sold oodles of copies (and nintendos), yet it still goes for around 20 bucks. It's because it's a "classic" and one of those games that's on the "If you have the system, you must have this" list. Two things drive value, Rarity and Demand. Basic economics. Megaman is such a storied and memorable brand that its value comes from people wanting it. If everyone wanted "Play Action Football", I'm sure its used price on Amazon would be more than a penny too. -
GAME Collecting Pet Peeves - So Annoying!
Lendorien replied to Metal Jesus's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Goodwill, Writing on stuff with those damn grease markers, especially when they write on things that can't be easily cleaned. Or worse yet, TAPING collectible boxes shut with box tape. Trying to remove that damn tape ends up ruining the box laminate 9 times out of 10. And the labels. Always remove goodwill labels as soon as you can. if you can get it off without tearing, you can use the label to sticky up any residue left behind. It's actually pretty effective on laminated or plastic surfaces. But don't wait because the longer they're on, the harder they are to get off. Another Goodwill irritation is finding a really desirable item on the shelf, but some jackwagon has stolen the CD out of the case or the wrong game is in it. I'll agree with Darthkur on the games in the showcase thing. You end up calling someone over to open the case to look at them only to find that they're all worthless overpriced commons. -
I have a 32" high end Sony Triniton from the mid 90's. It's got a lovely picture, certainly nothing I'd ever complain about and it appears to be higher resolution than most older televisions, so things look pretty crisp on it, especially through Svideo. I have about 8 systems hooked up to it, due in part to Y cables (for the RF systems) and a wonderful Pelican Composite/Svideo game switch I found at a goodwill a few years ago. I paid 15 dollars for it and had to buy a power cord, but it was one of the best thrift finds I've ever had because they stopped making them a long time ago (The current ones seem to all be HDMI and nothing else). I have as many systems as I can hooked up via Composite or svideo (a couple are modded for it, such as the 7800 and my genesis) and the rest via RF through Y cables. I've never found the signal bleed through the Y-cables to be bad enough that I cared.

In video game hell, you only have Mario Party for the N64 to play, but the controllers thumbstick is already busted. In Video game hell, the only game you have to play is actually HELL on 3DO. (Anyone remember that one?) Or worse yet, "Plumbers don't wear ties." In Video Game hell, all those Sealed CIB games you own? Yeah, empty boxes. Better hope no-one ever weighs them. In Video Game hell, your "toaster" NES behaves like a real one and burns down your house. In Video game hell, the only place you can ever find games is at thrift stores, and they're always over-priced by about 850%. In Video Game hell, you walk into the thrift store at the same time as a guy is walking out with the score of the century And you probably only missed it by like 10 minutes.

Has a video game ever made you cry?
Lendorien replied to Atari5200's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I don't recall ever crying because of a game, but I do recall playing FF7 and quitting when Aeris died because I'd grown so attached to her character that it sort of killed the game for me. Haha. Sort of silly really. -
Man. I was going through a box today and found my original IBM PC copy of Pirates that I pulled out of a bargain bin in 1994. It's the original one. Not sure why it was in a bargain bin 7 years after it came out. I played that game like crazy. Then later Pirates! Gold. And then the more recent remake. High five for doing so well!

Modded my Sega Control Stick to a new type of Atari 2600/7800 controller
Lendorien replied to ave1's topic in Atari 7800
https://youtu.be/iFX4f83dC1Q I uploaded a video to show you what I did. -
I would jump in and help out with expanding the Atari Selection, but Atari has never quite been my focus and everything I have is already on there.

Rfgeneration.Com is what I've used for years. They have a massive database that covers just about everything. Atari is extremely well represented too. The app is available for Android on the play store. It is linked to the main site, so you have to have an account there. I've used it for some time to make sure I don't double buy stuff. They break down inventory by cart, box. Manual so you know how complete things are. It also has pictures for some stuff, though not everything because the database is built on user submissions. I think you do need a net connection to use some of the features. It is free though. Hope this helps!

The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
Lendorien replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Well, not much fun for me lately. Not in ages. Here are mine in the past couple months. * A CIB copy of Chibi-Robo for Gamecube for 12 bucks at a thrift store. Nice find that. * Atari Video Pinball (C-380) for 99 cents at a thrift store. The Power button is toast, but I wired an alt switch to the bottom of the man board and it works like a champ. Missing the battery door though, but who cares. It plays great! * An original NDS in great cosmetic condition with the power cord for 5 bucks. * Vice: Project doom for the NES for 15 dollars at a used book store. Not a huge find, but way cheaper than I'd buy it online. -
Modded my Sega Control Stick to a new type of Atari 2600/7800 controller
Lendorien replied to ave1's topic in Atari 7800
I found this to be an interesting video indeed. I used the Master system controller once, years ago. I too didn't like the big boxy handle on top, so I totally see where some people would love this mod. I never have liked the Atari 7800 controller either. I find it awkward to hold, especially since I have larger hands. I tend to use a Sega Genesis controller when I play my 7800. I would love to have one of the European D-pad style controllers. Why they weren't standard in the US version of the 7800, I will never know (maybe they had stock they needed to get rid of.) It was competing against the NES after all. As a side note, since you tinker around with controllers and mention it... have you ever been inside one of those Wico Command sticks? I have one that was completely broken. The way they work is with a rubber mat fitted over the handle of the stick. Prsumably, as the controller moves, the robber flexes back, giving that "spring back" feel. Over time, the rubber gets brittle and breaks. I attempted to repair it with rubber Washers cut to size and glued together. The controller works a bit better but it doesn't have the feel of one in good repair. Have you any thoughts on this? -
I am putting together a list below similar to the heavy sixer serial number list found in the 2600 thread, though this one focuses on Atari's dedicated consoles. This has been done in other sub-forums here. I find them to be interesting because they provide information about model changes and such through the lifespan of a product. I thought perhaps we could do that here. I'll maintain the thread as people post (with mod permission of course). This thread is for Atari made dedicated Consoles. This does not include the hand-helds. If I missed any, let me know. If there's anything unusual about your console, please note it for inclusion. Atari Pong (C-100) * Sears Tele-games Version * Atari Version Atari Hockey Pong (C-120) Atari Super Pong (C-140) Atari Pong Doubles (C-160) Atari Super Pong 10 (C-180) Atari Super Pong Pro-Am (C-200) Atari Super Pong Pro-Am 10 (C-202) Atari Video Music (C-240) Atari Video Pinball (C-380) * Sears Telegames Version * Atari Woodie Version * Atari White Version 50796G - Lendorien Atari Ultra Pong Doubles (C-402) Atari Stunt Cycle (SC-450) * Tele-games Motocross Sports Center IV * Atari Stunt Cycle Atari Speedway * Tele-games Speedway * Tele-games Speedway IV

Man. I remember that playing that game on a four player tabletop version as a kid. It was wicked fun with other players.
-
Gosh. That's a tall order. Are those even made any more? Best I can tell, it's a connector that was only used on Atari hardware and doesn't exist any more.

"When it's done" is the best answer. I know they delayed the followup atari book in favor of the XM. And Curt has been doing more updates of late, and he has other team members actively working on finalizing things. I'd be surprised if it isn't in our hands before the end of the year.

The Official "Thrift finds" Thread

I'm pretty sure that part of the MF is in that crate. But not the whole thing sadly. Also, someone decided to use some of the beams as chew toys. -
Found mine. I wisely saved the e-mail. And the second e-mail I got from curt when I updated my address in 2012. Man 5 years coming.I can't wait. Thanks for the update Curt!

If you watched every episode of star trek and all the movies, you'd have spent over 21 days of your life watching Star Trek. And that's only if you watched each episode ONCE. I'm not sure Star Wars fans have that level of commitment.

Not a big fan of Defender, but this looks like it's shaping up to be a great port indeed. Nice to see that Bob is still at it.

The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
Lendorien replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Oh wow. Well, it seems to be a lot of mixed stuff. I've been trying to put sets together, but I'm guessing there may have been twice as much and another bin because of the different sets I seem to be finding. Blows me away how people can have money to spend on that much Lego. Ah to be 7 again. -

Well, no picture, but I picked up a 25 gallon rubbermaid tote at Goodwill the other day that was stuffed full of legos. Recent legos. complete sets of all sorts of Star Wars stuff. For 50 bucks. Must be 5 or 6 hundred dollars worth of Legos in there. My wife thinks I'm nuts. I think the mom who donated them to Goodwill was. I also picked up a CIB copy of the Konami Collector's Series: Contra/Castlevania collection for PC. For 2 bucks. I saw it and thought, that looks like a NES box. It wasn't, but then I saw what was in it and I had to get it. For whatever reason, it appears to be much wanted. Probably because it has Contra and super C on it as well as the first 3 Castlevania games. I haven't had wins like this since I picked up CIB Adventures of Lomax for PS1 at a Goodwill for 2 dollars half a year ago. I just don't find things as often as some of you guys do. -
Yoshi's cookie is such a bland looking game.

I have the theory that Gen Xers and Gen Ys have this obsession with nostalgia. Specifically of their childhoods. If you look in child pop culture, you see a lot of the same things we grew up with being reformatted and rereleased. My Little Pony, Legos, Transformers, He-man, etc. etc. etc. It's not just because our kids like the stuff, it's because we're reliving our childhoods through our kids. Move on to video games. I suspect your major collecting group is people in their 30's and 40's who grew up in the 70's thru early 90's and are now established in life with some spending money. They're trying to recapture the things of their childhoods. Video game collecting has exploded. I've been doing it for about 6 years now and it has gotten harder to do as things are starting to dry up and prices go up. The interest is increasing. I only see it going up for the forseeable future. 20 years from now? who knows. Maybe it'll go the way stamp collecting has.
