  1. Hey, y'all! It's been a while, and though I don't have any new written Atari reviews to share, I wanted to share a project I've been doing with a friend for a few months that we've called "The Player and the Doodler." I play a game while he makes a drawing or two while we both do commentary, and then we post both the gameplay video and the art. Among all the games we've done so far have been quite a few Atari games. If you ever wanted to see two guys unnecessarily freaking out over a game of Ballblazer, now's your chance. http://theplayerandthedoodler.com/ I think I may have shared the Youtube playlist a while ago, but now it's on its own website and should be far easier to navigate (plus now you can see the art associated with a game). Let me know what you think!
  2. Hey! So a friend of mine and I have been running a Let's Play channel for a few months now, playing some old games. Most of them have been old PC adventure games, but we've done a fair amount of Atari 8-bit stuff as well. The playlist for our Atari stuff can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAuyvVIuAVs&list=PLbCxC7Y4G5NWa9_Eh9PKK392GPKoGty2C Part of the gimmick of our stream is that my friend, who is an artist, does some drawings while I'm playing, and he's done some based on the Atari games we've done so far. Those are found at: theplayerandthedoodler.tumblr.com You can find the Atari stuff by clicking on the "Atari" category on the right-hand side of the page. So far we've done Bruce Lee, Ballblazer, Claim Jumper, Asteroids, Wizard of Wor, Dog Daze, Dog Daze Deluxe, Joust, M.U.L.E., One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird, and Pacific Coast Highway (which hasn't been posted yet). These videos aren't terribly informative, but we had a lot of fun making them; my friend hasn't played any of them before (save M.U.L.E., and even then it was a while ago), so it's fun witnessing his reactions to things. Anyway, I thought some of you might get a kick out of 'em. We're also running out of two-player co-op games (or competitive games, just as long as both players play at the same time), so if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears!
  3. It helps when this is a game I've actually played before. Granted it was the old PC version with 4-color CGA eye-bleeding graphics, but still... 3-1126 Might try again later.
  4. Was way late on this (I misread the date as Mar. 10, not Mar. 1). Still, here's my 108,450, for what it's worth.
  5. Thanks for your kind words! (Randomly, Ultima IV is another great game that I didn't discover until years later; in this case, probably only about three or four years ago.)
  6. OK, everyone, I've put together my M.U.L.E. review, so here 'tis: M.U.L.E. review There probably won't be any surprises in there. As for reviews going forward, I may just take the games being played in the High Score Club starting this season and go over the ones I haven't already reviewed. I'll still probably look at some of the ones suggested in this thread too. I also changed the domain name to atarireviews.com instead of atarieviewer.com (mostly so that people can now spell it) so update your links! EDIT: The new URL may not be working yet, so try the old one if the one above is broken.
  7. 22530 Not the best, but this is my first time. I got a ~24000 run once but didn't get the screenshot.
  8. I don't hate Mr. Robot; I gave it a B+! It's very difficult, and it's not my favorite, but it's still a good game. "Single Screen Chase Around Games" would've been a good category (some overlap with the Maze category there, but not entirely). Centipede and Dig Dug would've fit better there too, instead of in the Maze category where I put them. The rest really didn't fit with anything else, so that's why they ended up where they were. I hadn't considered writing for Pro© magazine, mostly because I didn't know it was a thing until just now. Most of these reviews I just write whenever in my spare time; I hadn't considered doing anything professional with 'em, but I wouldn't be opposed to the idea.
  9. I put together some interesting statistics on all the games I've reviewed so far. I came to some of my own conclusions about it, but I'd like to hear what everyone here thinks. Do you agree or disagree, and what else does this say about Atari gaming back in the day? Link to statistics post
  10. New reviews up: Journey to the Planets, Canyon Climber II, Serpentine, and Quarxon. With these, I've come to the end of my originally planned reviews, but I am planning on looking at M.U.L.E. next time, and Shamus and Spelunker soon as well. If anyone else has any suggestions for more game reviews, let me know!
  11. ECCAMF - Everything Changes Color And Moves Faster. I started using that acronym after I got sick of writing that phrase in virtually every review I wrote (I briefly mention it on my "About" page). I did play Vanguard with "Repeat Fire" enabled (playing it with single fire would wear out your trigger pretty quick, methinks). Sounds like the 5200 version functions a little better, especially if it's got a zone selection option. And don't worry; I've played M.U.L.E. enough with a good number and variety of people; I don't think anyone will be surprised with the score it ends up with! Spelunker and Shamus would be good reviews, too, especially since I like both those games far more than the somewhat mediocre games (for the most part) I've been finishing these reviews up with.
  12. Another new post: Turmoil, Amphibian, Pinhead, and Vanguard. I also did a post looking at some old BASIC programs that I copied out of old issues of Compute! when I was, like, eleven, but didn't give them proper reviews, for obvious reasons. Also, when I'm done with Disk 26 (which'll be the next review posted), I'll have run out of games that I had originally promised to review when I started the site, so I'm looking for good suggestions. I'm already planning on looking at M.U.L.E.
  13. New post: Firebird, Embargo, and Monster Maze. I'm still contemplating on whether I should change the grading to a letter-grade-based instead of number-based system to make things a bit clearer (people seem to be better with a game getting a B- than a 4/10). Thoughts? EDIT: Oh, what the heck. I'll do it.
  14. Pitfall II, while probably not lesser-known, is still the best on Atari 8-bit machines than any other version, simply for the extra level that's larger than the rest of the game.
  15. All right, you've convinced me! I take it back! Mr. Robot is the best game ever made!
