  1. I'm feeling old this year.

At only 29, I thought I was still young. Yet so far this year I've had people tell me the PS2 and Gamecube were "retro". Stating they were their first consoles. Sigh.

As someone who started with an NES when I was young, my idea of "retro" GREATLY differs. Heck, nearly every console with a CD drive in my eyes can't possibly be retro. It's been something I've been noticing recently. I guess I've finally crossed that threshold where I'm not in the young group of gamers anymore.

It does help me sometimes, though. I got a Jaguar once for a few bucks simply because the store owner thought it was broken...didn't have a cart in the tray. But most of the time it's a kick in the gut. When someone laughs at an original Gameboy wondering how anyone could play a game on it (when I remember clearly playing it in the car and on the bus without issue when I was a kid), doesn't understand what a memory card is or that it's needed (seriously, HDDs have spoiled newer gamers), or doesn't know how to play a system with just a dpad or only one joystick, it really just irritates me to no end haha.

  2. Thank you for sharing that. I actually wanted a 3DO back in the day when I saw the commercials but my parents couldn't afford it. I wish I had gotten one at the time too. I'll look into it, would be nice to finally get to experience it. I agree, I'd rather have the original games in their packaging, a burned disc wouldn't feel the same for me, I want the full experience.

I wasn't really aware of the system until I was in middle school. By then the system was gone. That would be really awesome to finally get what you couldn't have when you were a kid. I had a similar experience with the Sega Saturn. I wanted one so badly, and begged my parents for one but I never got one. By the time I had saved enough of my own money to buy a system for the fifth generation, the Sega Saturn was gone, so I picked up an N64. I loved the N64, great system, but I still kick myself for not being able to have a Saturn back in its hayday. I still remember drooling over screen shots of Sonic R and Daytona USA in gaming magazines, haha.

I have one FZ1 with no S-Video out, and looking inside, not even a place to solder a S-video plug.

About reliability, I always heard that the FZ1 is very reliable. The FZ 10 seems to have some laser issues but it's still reliable, unlike the Goldstar units.

That's interesting, hadn't heard anything bad about the FZ-10. It's always the one people say to get. The FZ-1 isn't bad though, not by a long shot. It's the Goldstar that's trash.

Btw, I'm curious if you could tell me when your FZ-1 was manufactured. There should be a sticker on the bottom. I've seen video on youtube showing FZ-1 units with S-Video in the back. I'm curious if many they added the feature later on in its life and wasn't there at launch, or maybe they took it out to save cost later in its life span. Very interesting stuff.

Btw, how many people do we have here with 3DOs? I wasn't aware it had much of a following on this site, but it seems I might be wrong. Any games you guys recommend? The ones I'm interested in that I don't own are listed below:

    Need for Speed

    Samurai Shodown

    Rebel Assault

    Wing Commander 3

    BC Racers

    Crash N Burn

    Sailer Moon

    Samurai shodown

    Off World Interceptor

    Primal Rage

    Bust-A-Move

    Space Ace

    Lemmings

    Mega Race

    Battle Chess

    Novastorm

    Battle Sport

    Policenauts

    Olympic Soccer

    Quarantine

    Burning Soldier

    Operation Starblade

  3. That's what I saw on eBay, they seemed pretty pricey.

Yeah, but it's worth it. Honestly, haven't felt so much excitement from a classic console that I had no nostalgia from since the Sega Master System. I honestly can't believe I missed out on this originally. It kinda ticks me off, because I would have totally supported this console if I knew more about it back then.

They sold about 5 million units world wide, and people tend to keep these things. That's why I think their value seems to be fairly high. The good news is that most of the games are pretty affordable. I know it can run burned games, but I really don't feel the same towards having a burned disc. There's something special about having the real thing in its original packaging.

  4. I have a JVC monitor that I love to death. I beg everyone who doesn't have one to purchase one. Classic gaming never looked so good, and they're small enough to fit with your game systems without needing as much room as a normal television.

Anywho, seriously nice score. Really don't need one, but dang I want one anyway, haha.

  5. Thanks everyone! Really surprised by all the interest in this. I think I'll keep this stock. It's in VERY nice condition, and frankly for 200 bucks I could buy every game I'd ever want, haha. That and the FZ-10 is the most reliable of the three. In fact, I don't think they're even known to have issues. The front loading mechanisms though of the Goldstar and the FZ-1 are pretty common, especially with the Goldstar. I'd stay away from that one.

I like the FZ-10 so much. Been playing it all day. It loads really quick, is quiet, has a great build quality, and I don't have to worry about its reliability. Plus, it has a PC Engine Duo-esq look to it, which makes it look really nice in my opinion.

This one is in great condition, and I still can't believe I got this for a hundred bucks.

Very nice! The best version of an interesting console (does yours have S-Video out?), a good pair of controllers, and four of the top games on the system. I'm tempted to pull mine out of consosleep again....

I believe all 3DOs have S-Video out, along with composite and RF. They're not proprietary, just any male to male cord will do, which I really like about the system. The only difference I can think of between the three outside reliability is that the Goldstar and FZ-1 have a front loading CD mechanism, and the FZ-10 is the only one that came with a controller without a headphone jack and volume control built in. However, the FZ-10 will use FZ-1 and Goldstar controllers, and the volume/headphone jack functions will work on it.

ANYwho, as promised, here are some pics!

  6. Really excited! I ended up finding a 3DO FZ-10 locally for a heck of a price. The system is in mint condition, and came with two controllers. The original Panasonic controller and the Capcom fighting pad, which is really hard to come by. In fact, I had the same pad for my SNES when I was young, so its nice to have it again.

I also got the original cords as well as four games with all manuals and boxes. I got the long box version of Road Rash, Star Fighter (really looking forward to this!), Gex and Super Street Fighter II Turbo. And there's a ton more I still want to buy, so I'll be looking for those soon.

Still, for a start of a collection, I think I did great today :). I can't wait to plug this all up and get playing. I'll post pictures later today :).

Beautifully modded Sega Nomad by the original creator of the LCD mod. He no longer will be making any more of these systems, and these are done with the best of components and quality control. This is a perfectly modded Sega Nomad with the remote control to adjust brightness as obviously the old knob does nothing to adjust this new, clear, monitor. No more motion blur, no more washed out colors. This will REALLY impress. System is in great condition, with a replaced screen protector. Minor scratches, but overall amazing shape. Comes with original Sega AC adapter, and a few games. Awesome condition blue Sega Game Gear. This has been modified with a blue power light AND LED backlights! The system is in seriously nice condition for an old portable, and has a beautiful screen protector (original)

    SOLD TY!

Since I got a NEC PC Engine Shuttle, I no longer need this Turbografx 16. Comes with power, NES RF adapter, controller in great condition, and system with some scuffs and scratches. Comes complete with the back expansion cover, and works great.

    $80

Next is a Japanese Xbox 360. This is the late model Elite model, which didn't have the issues of the earlier models. It comes with a very, VERY rare (and very expensive) Hori Xbox 360 EX 2 pad, which is the only known pad for the 360 to not give gamers a lazy drifting joystick after a while of play. It also sports 6 face buttons making it the perfect fighting game pad. It comes with a deathsmiles faceplate, but I have the original as well. Console is in mint condition, and sports its original HDD.

The import 360 also comes with a handful of great Japanese games.

Mushi Mushi Pork & Sweet Sweets - One of developer Cave's best batch of shooters. Seriously fun game if you're a shooter fan, and very hard to come by. Still comes with the original plastic sleeve.

    Infinite Undiscovery

    Marvel VS Capcom 3

Gal Gun - A 3D anime-looking shooter where you shoot cupid arrows at girls' boobs ... how can you go wrong.

    $225

The next system up for sale is a PS2 online edition. This is boxed, with the online edition box. Comes with all manuals and online discs sealed brand new! These include: PS2 Neo Geo Battlecoloseum, PS2 World Heroes Anthology, PS2 Gran Turismo 3, PS2 Downhiill Domination, PS2 Ace Combat 4, PS2, Sega Classics Collection, PS2 Technic Beat, Ace Combat 2, Bloody Roar 2, South Park Rally, Andretti Racing, Tekken 2, Collin McRae Rally, Need For Speed II, N2O, Robotron X, Wipeout, Wipeout 3, Colony Wars, Rally Cross 2, Wing Commander IV, Soul Blade, Touring Car Challenge, Frogger, Grand Turismo 2.

    SOLD

    Some loose gameboy games!

Pokemon Yellow (New Battery just installed!)

    Tetris

    Wave Race

    Blades of Steel

    Super Mario Land

    Alleyway

    SOLD

PDP Xbox 360 Versus Fighting Pad - I think I used this twice. All the microswitches/buttons work perfectly. It's a late model, so it shouldn't be damage prone like the early batches.

    Thanks everyone!

  8. Yes no love,The Lost World is one of the worst arcade games of all time!. no.I've never played it actually and have no excuse why(it's readily available on Mame). When me and my sister went to Chuck E Cheese when we were little there was a Jurassic Park sit down model there. We only played it I'd say around 3 times before they replaced it with Johnny Nero Action Hero.I played it once and It could have been a decent game(I don't remember if it was good or not) but not as good as a Jurassic park sit down cab,Now The Lost World looks like and could be the better game but since I have a Jurassic boner for the 1st sit down cab I like it better.

    Uh huh.... :-/

First, I emplore you to play it. It's actually very fun. Arguably more so than the first, as you actually have to reload... and other gameplay elements such as shooting special targets and collecting candy bars (health).

Also, MAME for that game is way off. It's enough to play it, but many of the effects still haven't been emulated either well or at all. heck, the whole flashlight section of the last level is completely missing in current emulation, and fog/environments/colors looks downright horrid. That and, as with the first Jurassic Park, I'd hope you'd understand that playing a lightgun game through a PC is..... less than satisfying.

Not saying you need to get it. I honestly was just happy someone mentioned Jurassic Park. Just figured someone who "hated" it so much would have at least tried it if they liked the first so much. There is a reason why it's so popular. Its a hoot.

  9. Can't help on the monitor connection, but I just wanted to say I like where you're going with this. If the monitor is nice, and you can figure out how to connect it to a PC, it would be great to do a MAME cab that way. Heck, you could make the outside look like whatever cab you like, and it could play that game.

My only question is what condition is the wood in? If the back crumbled that easily, wouldn't the rest be like that?

Don't worry about the coin slot mechanism. If you're using it for MAME, the coin slot is really just for show, no? I don't know what lights it takes, but I have extra coin slot lights (over 30 in fact lol). If you need a couple to get those lit up, I wouldn't mind shipping you a pair to help you out.

Repaint, some silkscreen decals, new controls, hook ups on the monitor, and the MAME PC. Lots of work, but perfectly doable. :)

  10. - Contra NES

    - Blades of Steel NES (or it's pure nostalgia?)

Blades of Steel had an arcade release??? I'll have to check that out!

And yeah, Contra was a POS in the arcade. I played that when I was young after playing the NES version to death and was sorely disappointed in what was being presented to me, lol.

  11. Please post some pictures :). I'd love to see a Berserk cab, even if it's.... not one any more.

I know it might not be worth the money, but are you seriously considering turning it back into one? Frankly, it would be a shame to see this become just another MAME cabinet. Rebuilding it to its former glory wouldn't be easy, I'm sure, but it would be one hell of a pay off if you could get it back like it was back in the day :).

Seriously exited to see what you do, either way you take it. Please post pics when you get a chance, and if you need any help feel free to ask away!

  12. I figured this would be fun. Think of arcade games where the game was actually worse in the arcade than its home console port. It doesn't have to mean graphically. Could also be gameplay wise.

Some ones off the top of my head.

Contra: Super C (same game) played much better than the arcade game and looked better to boot. The arcade had a horrible color palette that looked washed out and bland. And its controls were sluggish in comparison to the nes counterpart.

Roadblasters: Granted it looked better in the arcade and on the Genesis, I thought the game had a better pace and controlled better on the nes.

Lastly, Ninja Gaiden: while it had better graphics in the arcade, the play style was horrible compared to the more platformer-like NES title. Both are hard as nails but that seems to be where the similarities end.
