  1. Oh yeah, it also bears mentioning that the Vita has sold fewer units in the same amount of time as the Dreamcast. I like the system, but I really hope Sony doesn't go through with this foolishness again.

That's interesting. I didn't know that. Then again, I know at least in the beginning the DC sold rather well.

I don't think you have to worry about a 3rd handheld from Sony. Clearly, they've conceded this area to the smartphone and are just eking out what they can from this investment.

I can't imagine a replacement being green lit. Any Sony mobile gaming after this will surely be as a component of their Xperia smartphones.

I agree. Especially in the state Sony is in right now, with them shedding off unprofitable divisions, I can't see them going a third time into a profitless market. It's sad, as I've actually quite enjoyed the hardware they produced. But they don't seem to understand that making devices that try to be a console experience, but worse, is wrong. They should have eventually learned to take N's approach to instead create unique games you can't get anywhere else, and for a lower price at that.

Even still, I think the Vita could have been ok. It got FANTASTIC media coverage and praise at first.

And then they announced memory cards were priority and ridiculously priced. After that, they really haven't had the same media hype since. In fact it all but killed the hype for it's launch in the states. I remember them not pushing out nearly as many systems as they thought they would...

  2. PlayStation TV US release date has been announced. Due to launch in October.

    Fixed.

The Vita is dead. Digital releases are on the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Wii U. Doesn't stop each from having healthy stock of games at any gaming/department store. Say what you want, but I bet in a year this thing is history, hence why it's name has been changed in North America, but not in Japan where it's not doing so badly.

  3. There's fun to be had for sure. Then again, there's not many consoles I can think of from the modern age where fun couldn't be had.

I think that's besides the point. If you wait (most likely) just a few months, these things will be on clearance. All that GameStop has is a side rack, identical to the original DS, with a handful of games.... no systems. Department stores... even worse. The only games that seem to ever be announced are PS3/4 ports, but most of the time the system is on dialysis.

Again, if you want to buy one in the future. Great. There are certainly a decent chunk of games to enjoy for it. But there's simply not enough to justify a purchase now while the unit (and needed memory cards) are still very expensive, with a game library that's all but halted.

It's a shame. Unlike the Wii U, the Vita hasn't caught it's "break". It hasn't had that one game that starts to turn things around. And it should have it, because it's a fantastic piece of kit.

But recommending the system to someone at the current price based on it's position and current library.. look guys, I know you might like some of the games, but you can't honestly stand behind a dying system and say it's a good value right now.

    Wait.

  4. I think the Dreamcast, considering the vintage it comes from, has aged the most gracefully of all the polygon-based consoles. I think it held its own against the PS2 and unfortunately Sega was already bleeding from mortal wounds at that time and couldn't hold on. Nice controller design also.

Very true.. except that cord. WHY did they put it on the bottom with that stupid clip on top that doesn't hold it? WHYYYYYYY!!! >:(

  5. True, 3DO boxes are nice, but normal small jewelcases... I don't know, I just don't really like them as a game case. They're too small, you can't fit much of a manual in those things! They worked for PC games because with the large box you could have a separate manual, but consoles that use those cases... I don't know, I like larger cases better. Plus of course the things are fragile and break all the time. Saturn/Sega CD-style longbox cases, like Novastorm uses, also are extremely fragile, but I do think that people who complain about that all the time leave out that normal jewelcases are no better, durability-wise. I like the look of those big jewelcases anyway.

Anyway though, there I was mostly comparing cases like Novastorm's to those of other PS1 games, not to the 3DO.

But that's why I'm confused. There were two types of NA 3do boxes. Ones like the PS1 ones, where they opened from the side and had a full length manual with a disc held within the long case, or a cardboard one that opened on the end with a jewel case inside and a long manual inside.

Either way, you end up with a long box and long manual. I agree jewel cases suck, but the 3DO didn't really utilize those unless if was the latter style box which just held the CD inside in place.

Not quite -- there were a few jewel-case only releases in the US, mostly samplers and adult games. (And of course all Euro and Japanese releases used regular jewel cases.)

True. I don't really see the "porn" games as real games. I know they "are", but they always seem very unofficial. But you're right, Japanese games were jewel case only. I guess I thought we were just talking NA games :). Those are the ones I primarily collect, so that's how I think of the game boxes for the 3DO.

  6. As someone who's owned both, I honestly can't understand why anyone prefers the PS4. Now, I can't comment on Battlefield (though from what I hear that whole release was botched from the beginning...), but hardware wise I think the Xbox One outshines my PS4, and is played all the time in comparison. To base performance of the two on a poorly constructed third party title sounds like poor judgement.

First, the controller is honestly just.. better. From the joysticks, to the triggers, to the general shape/feel. On top of that, the rubber finish on the Xbox One controller doesn't lose it's texture. I've owned 3 PS4 Dualshocks and each one lost it's "bumpy" texture in about a week. One creaks where the tip of the handle/stick is, and two had to be sent back due to sticking R1 triggers. In fact, my system itself was sent back as it's disc drive made a horribly loud noise when booting a disc based game.

While I understand launch hardware isn't perfect, and even the launch X1 had it's issues, from my personal experience Sony's hardware just doesn't hold up right now. And considering the controller is the only thing I actually touch while playing, to have a controller that feels slick, without texture, just feels... gross.

I also felt the UI is MUCH nicer on the Xbox than the PS4. The PS4's felt dated.

I will say, I do like the share button MUCH better than yelling at my Xbox to "record that". I do wish the Xbox One had that button feature. Although, I do like how Xbox only records a short segment, where as PS4 records well more footage than I need, which fills the hdd.

Not critiquing too much. At the end of the day, whichever you pick, you'll be happy. And while I like the voice controls, you don't really need the Kinect. With both being the same price right now, I'd say the Xbox One is honestly the best choice of the two. But again, that's for my tastes and my opinion. I like the exclusives that Microsoft has been showing this time around more than what's on Sony, so... to each their own.

That said, I've been a Sony and Nintendo gamer for as long as the two have been making systems, with me only taking a "break" from each during the Wii era and the PS2 era, as I didn't much like either system at the time (I thought the GameCube rocked, and I hated Sony for a bit for killing off the DC with an over-hyped, weak system). So I hope that's taken into account. I've owned original and 360 Xboxes, but I never really liked them... still don't. In fact, I've sold them. For me to say I MUCH prefer an xbox product over a sony one... well, there's got to be good reason behind that for me to feel that way.

Call me crazy. To each their own. :)

  7. I'd like to get a 3DO... even though I'm far from convinced that it has many games I actually want to play much, I want one anyway. Collecting consoles is addictive! And there are a few 3DO games I do really want to play, most notably the 3DO version of Star Fighter. The AD&D games and Blade Force also look interesting, among others. I have some stuff for the 3DO (a few games, a controller...), but no system yet...

I'd say the best version of Novastorm is the PS1 version -- it's two discs long on PS1, as opposed to one disc on all other platforms, and they use the space to increase the graphical quality and window view size. It's the same basic not-so-good game, but you DO have a larger play window on the PS1.

There's something about the 3DO that you just won't understand till you play it. Gameplay footage on Youtube.... just doesn't cut it for some reason. It's a GREAT sounding system, first off. In fact, most of the games feel more amazing than they are purely because of the astounding sound coming out of this machine. I just love it, and I can't think of any console that "sounds" like this. Hard to describe...

Also, there's a certain fluidity when it comes to many games. Particularly Star Fighter. If you've ever played the Saturn version, it's honestly a heap of crap compared to the 3DO one. Games on the 3DO in general just feel smooth. NFS is also like that, for me. I donno, I used to be such a huge fan of the Saturn. I played all the 3DO "ports", and figured the 3DO was just a piece of junk as their ports never felt quality to me. But the originals (speaking of Star Fighter here) feel like a generation ahead. And considering it's on older hardware, that really makes me scratch my head.

I'll be honest, I bought the system just because it was an interest. It was there for sale, I had nothing else to buy, and I saw a couple games I wanted like Road Rash, and figured... what the hell.

A slight "interest" has turned into near obsession. I'm not saying the system is the best of all time. The game library is full of duds. But it's also full of great games that I'm embarrassed to say I've missed till my current age of 29. If you're smart, and don't buy a lot of the crap on the system, the console will reward you with a metric ton of gameplay. Even games like Gex just feel better.

I donno, hard to explain. When I play the 3DO, I feel like I'm playing an expensive console that just is leagues better in several ways to it's contemporaries of the same generation. It's a system that will surprise you, and for me, that's more than I ever expected from this little grey box.

You can find deals on eBay if you're patient. Like I recently posted, I just got a Japanese 3DO for 42 bucks plus 5 shipping. That's just a no brainer, right there. Avoid giving in to buy it nows if you can, unless the price is uber cheap. Oh, and there ARE FMV games that are good on the system. Something I can't honestly say about any other home console.

I've taken some risks on games and been pleasantly surprised. If I were to recommend a starting point, I'd recommend Street Fighter 2 Turbo. It was my first game I put into the 3DO, and it quickly changed my opinion of the system almost immediately. Samurai Shodown is also nearly as impressive.

Enjoy, and let us know if/when you get one!

  8. Been a while, but still absolutely loving my 3DO!

Hopefully others will find this thread and share, but I've been getting back into the system once again with some new games I picked up fairly recently. I got Star Control 2, Space Hulk, and the Need for Speed for pretty cheap, locally.

Can't say enough about Need for Speed. Makes the Saturn version look/play like a piece of junk. It's funny, I always hated the Saturn and PS1 game, but I love this version probably more than NFS 2SE on the PC, which is my favorite NFS game. It doesn't play like 2, but that's a good thing. It actually feels like a real racing sim (well, compared to 2 and the Sat/PS port of 1).

Star Control 2 is interesting. I've only played a little bit, but I think I'll like it. The gameplay is fun, and the presentation so far is top notch.

  9.

This isn't made for portability that's obvious if you look at it. For people like me that sit around the house and play the 3DSXL its fine. Its got rubber feet so you need a table to play it on, its not going to move around unless you go nuts with games.

I dont think it will scratch anything its probably got another pare of rubber grips to keep it attached

Pretty useless arguing about it. It could turn out to be a dud (its 25 bucks yen I think) or it could be a nifty little device to play some old school games on. Have no idea but I wouldnt pay much for this.

    I'm not arguing... :/

I hope it does turn out well. But I've had too many non-name brand accessories like this in the past that end up jacking up the system, psychically, for me to trust it out of the gate. I'll wait for reviews. But personally, I'm pretty happy with the circle pad until then.

  10. These aren't mine, so I can't speak for the quality of the seller (though he has good feedback). I've been looking for a way (as you saw from a previous thread) to be able to see what N64 games I have from the top, as Nintendo (and every company from that time period) thought NOT having a top label was a genius idea...

I ended up stumbling across an Etsy page where this guy made a complete US collection of top labels. I found his eBay page, where he sells them as well, and figured it might be something to share to my fellow AAers who are in the same spot as me.

He claims they won't harm the carts by leaving residue behind, which is good. I hope that's true, as I HATE sticker residue. But this might be a good solution for you guys.

I personally have a lot of import carts, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do about those ones. He only seems to sell the US ones, so I'm not terribly sure what to do atm. But either way, enjoy.

  11. 3DS isn't heavy enough for this thing not to flop around. Plus, it's just a damn dpad topper.

And then there's the matter of portability. Which this basically makes ... useless.

Not to mention, devices like this usually scratch up systems. No way I'd put this on my Pikachu XL.
