  1. I didn't believe it, but it's a standard port! I think it's a standard 13 pin DIN socket that fits it! suprised me too! Although it is designed for monitor so I think you need additional hardware to drive a TV with that. RE the boot problem. I know the ST if it has no disk in drive will take quite a while to boot, the disk doesn't have to be readable, it just gets it past the drive timeout. if there is a disk there (the drive doesn't hae to time out, it can just fail). Some drives were very quiet. I would try plugging it directly into a TV, not via a switch box. I have had some very naff pictures with some of the older RF switch boxes
  2. i read on a site that the current hack is a backdoor past the encryption that was built in incase the actual key was ever lost. It also explained the way the encryption works. something along the lines of. The first 8K of data on the cart is the checksum of the cart. If you then run the key over the cart data the checksum should match the one on the cart. So if this is the case, doesn't that mean the Jag knows the key. so it must have it stored somewhere. If you disassemble the standard Jag bootROM surley the key is stored within that? Simply retrieve the key and use that to generate the checksum data. (means games boot slower at first whilst the Jag checks the values. But I guess it should work. Or possibly even, make a modified bootrom, so you stick in your cart. The jag then generates the checksum it expects to find in the 8K, and if it doesn't match, instead of going red screen on us, it simply echos the value to screen/carts NVRAM. If this worked you could use a jag as a crypt jag. and when you write something you could get it to generate the code you need for that line of carts. I am going to have to have a stab are dissassembling the Jag rom see if I can make any sence out of it. Does anyone have a memory map of the Jag?
  3. i will have a mooch on ebay for one. those are new so obviously dear. but you may be able to find a cheap system & hdd on ebay
  4. http://www.icd.com/atari/ Limited supply it looks like but they still have some it would seem. From what I recall they were the bee's knees of SCSI adaptors for the ST. good luck
  5. They don't seem that expensive. I have only found 8-bit ones. But 4 256K 8 bit 120ns EPROMS are 3.99 each so 4 would only be £16 is (probs around $22) Dosen't seem too expensive http://www.maplin.co.uk goto semiconductors and then eproms. They have a few.
  6. So any EPROM will do? if that is the case then they are pretty cheap at Maplin. and 8MB EPROM is only £9.99 (which I guess is around $15) The smaller 512K ones are £2.49 ($3-4)
  7. No, I had a 520 STFM with a 240 Meg SCSI HDD. I used to run my BBS off it. You need a DMA to SCSI adaptor card. I have a GeLogic one, ICD were a very reputable make for them. and you also need the HDD driver (for the card) and a DMA cable (Easy enough to build. and I think I could supply you with a driver possibly). you should have no probs running the HDD, as long as you have the right bits.
  8. didn't hasbro release them into the community? What type of encryption is it? symetric? if so, has no mad man yet set asside some cpu cycles and had a damn good go at cracking it?
  9. we had this problem on our home TV..I think another possibility has been overlooked. It could possibly be a dry join on the circuitry that controls the vertical position. check for dry solder joints and re-solder them.. You may be able to take it to a TV repair shop and get it done for around £40 if thats the case. good luck
  10. as long as the hdd is scsi you can use it on an st.. it doesn't matter what it is from.. you just need the relivant card and cable. and drivers it is possible
  11. I am sure I have seen the encryption keys downloadable somewhere. If they are availible, then is it not possible to encrypt the disc's that are home made, so they work?
  12. Why do you think I want one? I have got this Android already (I call him Tim). I have had my mum commited, I just need to be able to hack banks and security doors to make me happy..
  13. this is what I thought. Get a cheaper option, and find out just what I think. If I get into it in a big way.. splash out on an Alpine.
  14. I was thinking this myself.. although there is something nice about a cart.. Plus I have always wanted to make a cart Whats the issue with producing Jag CD's that don't require a bypass cart? I am guessing they are encrypted, and that they also have bad block protection on the disc?
  15. just to stay true to form I messed the prices up £9.99 was for an 8MB EPROM.. 512K ones are only £2.49 I guess then that these are not suitable for carts?
  16. Hiya I have read a few threads, sites, where the rarety and cost of EPROMS is brought up. What type of EPROMS does a Jag Cart require? I take it 2MBytes typically of storage but am guessing that this can span several chips. I did a quick search and found that 512K EPROMS are availible for £9.99 so 2 making 1 MB brings the cost of the cart to £20 (plus your save ram etc etc). Is this about right? Or do Jag carts need EPROMS of a specific type/speed ?
  17. I know in the UK you can get special box packaging for transporting CD's so you don't need a Jiffy bag, you just put it in this box which is just a bit bigger than the jewel case, and write the addy on the front etc. Perhaps that could help?.. Or carefuly peal the film off the disc and send that in an envelope. Then the person at the other end just puts it back on a CD and away you go
  18. hmmm This is true.. Spose I just want all my toys NOW! I'll have a bit of a read up on the various platforms, and see what I can find. I take it the Jag Server mods ain't looked on too well anymore since the arrival of Jugs and Protector ? Thanks for reminding me of this option..
  19. cheers for that link. Just a quick post to say OOPS! I got the price wrong, I actually paid £28.40 for my transport, the price was £22 before postage and VAT DOH! sorry, hope this hasn't cause too many nasty emails to cricklewood electronics
  20. SHUSH! Can't you say Supercross 3D is ace or something.. I am trying to sell my copy on eBay.. because errr I want to share it's aceness wih other people
  21. never seen one on ebay in the uk I was thinking of the flash cart as this I assumed would be a lot cheaper and give me a good idea of if I really wanted to do the devel work or not. Rather than outlaying wads of cash and then deciding that I didn't actually have the time/inclination to do anything. argh! why are interesting things so difficult (especially to get past the wife )
  22. a quick check you could do would be to just unclip the cradle carefully with the loom till attached and make sure the cables are still attached to the lateral motor, or the spindle motor. I know one I discovered was (gotta write a doc about this too ) If when you powe rit up the laser stays near the centre and makes a loud clicking noise and sorta vibrates, weither the door is open or closed, this is probably a dodgy wire on the zero switch.. (sences the laser is at zero position). If a wire has come off, or the switch is damaged, the unit will continually try and send the laser to the zero possition (ie try and push it into the spindle motor). The clicking is the teeth gratting against each other on the rack. Should be a 5 minute solder job to fix.
  23. OOPS! It appears that I made a boo boo. It looks like I paid about £27.40 for my unit. I will check this when I get home from work and can look at the cheque book stubs. my bad. sorry, I'll update my doc when I get home also. Sorry if this has inconvieniced anyone, and thanks for letting me know gusbucket13
  24. cheers, thanks. I hope it helps you to resurect those units. Don't forget to try just pulling on the platter (as I have now been informed by several people here). As a common problem is the platter sliding down the spindle and jamming. I'll be updating my docs with this little gem. Could have saved me £22, but end of the day I enjoyed myself Thanks again
  25. yeah this is true. Probs why only a few people use them and they cost soo much to buy. Would be nice, it's a deffinate way to stop people using your computer at least
