  1. I was going to say, hands down, Baldur's Gate, but it was already mentioned by Mechanized.  For reasons he stated, I can't really fault any of the programmers of the older games, as there were limitations and you could only do so much without detracting from the game play.

But Baldur's Gate...ugh.  I just finished that on Sunday, and boy, did I feel violated.  ...   Man, I was pissed.  Pretty good game overall, though not exceptionally difficult (you were pretty much told what to do and where to go), but fuck that ending blew.

I'm glad to hear for a fact that BG2's ending was equally bad, as I was about to buy it for the PC just to "continue" my old game.  :)

    John

LOL! I was really disappointed by that too! What was even more frustrating was all the treasure in the final level (gold, fantastic items, etc.) but no way to cash them out. I was so careful managing what I could carry, and it ended up not making a damn bit of difference anyway. :(

  2. A few nods to Zelda here, and I'd probably have to add one too, but for Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time.

The final battle with Gannon was almost cinematic. After you FINALLY beat him, you have to grab the princess and get the hell out of the tower as it crumbles down around you. My heart was pumping and hands sweating the whole time. It truly felt like I accomplished something after beating that game.

  3. No Rygar?  :x

Probably a good thing, considering it would be the NES version.

Not that the NES version was a bad game or anything, but it was changed quite a bit from the arcade original (surprise surprise) and it lacked any sort of save or password feature, meaning you'd have to beat the entire game in one sitting.

I did it and it's not something I'd ever want to do again....

Rygar on the NES was incredible! It was a fairly early title and I recall be amazed by the scenery and backgrounds (parallax scrolling, vivid sunsets and mountains).

There were many NES games that didn't have save or password. Blaster Master and Super Mario Brothers immediately come to mind. Those marathon NES sessions were a good time. :)

As for batteries in this unit, I've picked up rechargeables. Especially handy with a digital camera. A little more to invest initially, but in the long run well worth it!

  4. I loved this game! I didn't beat the final challenge, but I did beat it with the 29 parts.

I found it worked best for me if I would "practice" and spend a day cycle hunting the parts out and figuring out a strategy. Exit without saving the game and starting that day over with a plan in mind. Otherwise I was running out of days very quickly.

I'm excited that Pikmin 2 does not have a set number of days restriction. It will be so nice to be able to explore the world and take it at a more liesurely pace.

  5. No, it's not a rehash of an N64 (or other console) game. Seems to be completely new. It is very similar however, with objective-based missions and alternating between two worlds (their world and our world with areas like the kitchen).

As for what type of game it is, it's a 3rd person perspective action game. You get a variety of weapons to collect, including rifles, bazooka, and grenades. You have lots of enemies (the tan army) to fight, plus vehicles to take out. The first mission, for example, is to take out the tan army communication post so they stop calling off airstrikes.

Oh, and it's the first Army Men game NOT done by 3DO! Some other company developed/published it.

  6. Was at Wal-Mart yesterday and they had a new release that I picked up, Army Men: Sarge's Army for Gamecube. It was only $14.88!

I'm sure a lot of you will think that it's not worth that, but I found the game to be quite a bit of fun, but overall I have enjoyed the Army Men series. Sarge's Heroes was actually the first game I picked up for the N64, so maybe I like it because of that nostalgia. It looks great on the Gamecube.

It's basically just another Army Men game, but well worth the cheap price IMO.

  7. It sure seems like the choice ultimately boils down to a matter of personal preference!

I have enjoyed my NES since the day I bought it new back in the 80's and have amassed a collection of a couple hundred games for it. I'd be really hesitant to give it up.

I didn't pick up a N64 new, but eventually got a used one and scored many many cheap games from Blockbuster as they were phasing the N64's out for newer generation consoles. I LOVE my N64. I currently have two systems hooked up for play (due to moving issues) and one is the N64.

If I had to pick one, I'd pick N64 in a heartbeat. It seems like the NES library is made up of a LOT of 2D platform games. While the N64 has a lot of 3D platform games, they seem like an overall richer experience. I loved DK64, Banjo Kazooie, Conker's BFD, and am now just playing Rayman 2.

I'd say go with the N64, but again it comes down to personal preference.

  8. Not meaning to hi-jack the thread... but how would I go about finding some of the old text games that I used to play.  One in particular I remember starting at a bottom of the hill... it said I was standing by a mailbox or something.  Then I went to the house on the hill... then typed something and went down the hill... I think there was a cave or something I could enter from there.  It was all Text if I remember correctly.

Anyone have a clue what it is, or where I can still get things like that?

    Thanks....

Sounds suspiciously like Zork. I don't think the house was at the bottom of a hill however, but you did start by a mailbox.

    OPEN MAILBOX

    TAKE LEAFLET

    READ LEAFLET

EAT LEAFLET (sorry, you can't do that here)

From the house you do enter a cave (under the rug).

    Ahhh, memories of Zork.... :)

  9. I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix a sega genesis 2 that gets a bad power connection.  I've heard that you can open it up and do some resodering but I'm not exactly sure what it is you need to resoder.

By "bad power connection" do you mean the picture will occasionally get full of static but you can get a better picture by jacking with the power cord?

I picked up a Genesis 2 this summer that is doing that and it is driving me CrAzY.

    Sorry, not much help.

  10. Super Mario Sunshine was a fun game, IMO. But some of the later levels get damn hard and I just couldn't finish it. Maybe my mad Mario skillz just aren't up to snuff! But it was fun while it lasted. Graphics were great and the cameral wasn't that bad (but you will need to do manual adjustments on it quite a bit).

I also liked Starfox Adventures a lot! It is more like a Zelda game (dungeons and puzzles, collecting items, powering up your weapon). I actually beat it, but the challenge didn't seem extremely steep.

  11. I was curious if anybody signed up for the "free trial" being offered by that game rental service GPlay.com? They claim you can receive a free trial of 2 free game rentals. I couldn't see for how long though, and was wondering if there was any other gotcha or hook there?

Any opinions or experience with them? Sounds like a pretty interesting deal, as is the service as a whole, if they are any good.

  12. funny, people i knew back in high school (80's) that loved AC/DC and kiss, was too busy taking drugs not playing videogames!

    Rick

LOL! :lolblue: I was thinking the exact same thing!

Too many parents probably heard the secret meaning of the band's names for AC/DC (Against Christ Devil's Children) and Kiss (Kids in Satan's Service) for game companies to consider licensing them.

The Journey arcade machine actually had a tape in it that played "Separate Ways" when you reached the bonus stage. That was kind of fun.

  13. I think that was bull. Journey did have a best-selling album when this lousy game was thought up (and they never came close to the success of "Escape" afterwards), but they were considered to be the lowest form of "wuss rock."  I'd compare their reputation to something like Creed with even less balls. They were popular among teenaged girls and despised by teenaged boys.  I think the bad choice of band doomed this project from the start.  The most marketable bands for video gamers at the time would have been Kiss or AC/DC.

I wouldn't agree with that assessment of Journey at all. That depends on your age, people you hung out with, and other factors. Whether you like them or not, Journey was extremely popular. AC/DC, while popular, was considered pretty "hard" and Journey was more "mainstream". As a teen in the 80's, we listened to a lot of Journey and liked it. Went to the concerts, made out to "Open Arms" in the backseat, bought the vinyl albums, etc. My gf even bought the video game and we played the crap out of it.

VCS games based on movies weren't all that spectacular either. Doesn't mean the movie was bad.

  14. A co-worker and I were reminiscing about the glory days of the Playstation and the games we had really enjoyed for it, and the game Blasto came up.

Blasto was a comical space adventure with a cartoon look and was voiced by the late Phil Hartman. I loved that game! The voice over was hilarious and there were tons of great one-liners. We actually managed to beat the game too.

IMO this is one of those lost game franchises that was worthy of a sequel, but will probably never see. Especially considering the Phil Hartman voice was a significant part of the appeal.

Anybody play and enjoy Blasto? Or hated it for that matter? Think a sequel would have been cool?

  15. Just look at the games they're offering . . . For a system that has a pretty solid library from top to bottom, those are pretty much the turds of the bunch.

Wow, you pretty much nailed it on the head. Not exactly the gems of the CV library.

I have to imagine there are huge licensing issues at work here. A large majority of the CV library were arcade games or based on licensed products (Cabbage Patch Kids, Tarzan, etc.).

While it's interesting that the CV is making some kind of comeback, if there will only be generic games like this, it won't have much appeal IMO.

  16. I like how the default game variation (1) lets your Frogger wrap off the screen without dying! Makes it a lot simpler. Freaks me out though when I switch back to the arcade version and try to go off the screen on a log. :(

I never was bothered with the flicker. I thought it was very playable.

  17. I put some more time in to this last night. Actually, I was looking forward to playing it all day! After I finally got the kid to bed and some chores done I could finally sit down and enjoy it. That's the sign of a good game to me!

The thing I keep coming back to is it would be nice if there was some kind of reward or progress indicator. It would make sense to time this with the 1000 point marks. Perhaps something like somebody else suggested like a ranking, or even a simple LEVEL xx. The downside to this would be that it would break up the gameplay somewhat.

Just curious, what kind of scores are people getting? I've broken in to the 8000 range.

  18. I'm curious then how much Best Buy is losing on these $4.99 games they've been blowing out this week...while they are now getting $5 apiece for them...the sheer volume of games that were a part of this sale must have meant they were taking a beating on a lot of stock...

Very interesting! What $5 games are there??? I might have to run to Best Buy over lunch!

  19. I' date=' for one, like the way the refueling target works now. Because it moves so slowly, you can try to use up all of your remaining torpedoes before nailing it at the last moment before it disappears. I like the way it appears every 1000 points, so you can plan for it's appeareance.

    [/quote']

AHHH!!! So that's how it works! :dunce: I was trying to figure out if it appeared randomly or not. Knowing that it comes out every 1000 points adds to strategy. COOL!

I really like the way the game ramps up difficulty every 1000 points. I agree it would be nice to at least have the choice to skip some of the earlier waves to get to the more challenging later waves sooner.

This really does give it a Beamrider kind of feel' date=' which I enjoyed thouroughly. Makes you kind of anticipate what nastiness is going to be thrown at you next!

I really enjoyed playing this game last night! I thought overall it did have quite a bit of sound, but the sonar idea thrown out does sound cool.

It did seem a bit touchy on firing torpedos. It seemed like it was too easy to launch a barrage of 2 or 3 torpedos when I didn't really mean to. Holding down the fire button will launch all torpedos, but maybe there should be a longer time delay between launches. Or perhaps no "auto-fire" and just hit the button for each launch?

Overall, this game is awesome! [/quote']

  20. Hell I've been using a walkthrough on Ocarina of Time consistantly. I suck at it. But I usuallly will beat a game twice if it is too frustrating. Hopefully Majora's Mask isnt so hard. What  makes me feel stupid is the neighbor kids beat it when they were 8 and 9

I thought Majora's Mask was MUCH harder that OoT! :( Maybe it was because you constantly had to jack with time and relive the same day over and over. That got tiresome to me, and I really think it would have been a much better game without that.

A walkthrough seemed pretty critical to me for Majora's Mask.

  21. I loved all the references to different movies that were contained in CBFD! A couple that especially stick out in my memory are the "Matrix" lobby scene, the "Aliens" cargo loader battle, and the "Saving Private Ryan" beach landing. Some parts were pretty hard and I had to play them over and over, but for me it was an amazing gaming experience.

And I think Nintendo actually wanted a naughty title. As I recall, they heavily promoted it at a Spring Break and were even handing out condoms with Conker's likeness on them (I wonder how many of those are still out there, new in package of course).
