  1. I've seen a couple of these at video game stores. I think one even had arcade joystick and buttons that must have hooked in to a specific system, probably a NES.

Seemed like an interesting concept, but geared towards standing in front of it, like an arcade cabinet. Personally I would rather sit and play games though.

I just played this the other day, and I'm not sure which version it was (late april I believe) anyways, this is very good.

The hotdogs do not quite act right, the egg and pickles seem kinda ok.

If someone can deduce the algorithms for each of the enemies from the arcade let me know. It also seems to vary some on the arcade early in a level vs after a few minutes enemies seem more likely to always take a ladder vs go after you if you are on the same platform. I have it so theere is a 2/3 chance they will stay on the same level and a 1/3 chance they will take a ladder. If you step off onto a ladder they are not very likely to stay on the same platform. Currently in my version all the enemies on a speed go at the same speed and use the same logic.

Not sure if the enemy AI in arcade is the same as some of the consoles, but one of the key strategies of the Intellivision version is the ability to predict what an enemy will do. Hotdogs try to circle around you by going down a ladder and back up on the other side of you. Example, you are on the edge of the right side of a bun, the hotdog is on the same level as you but further to the right. There is a ladder going down between you and the hotdog. The hotdog will come at you, but go down the ladder and continue going left until he gets to the next up ladder and then comes back at you. Eggs will just come straight at you. Pickles also come straight at you, but seem more aggressive.

The enemy reaction shouldn't be random, IMO. Part of the strategy of the game is knowing what the enemies will do and trick them in to doing what you want them to.

  3. What I find amazing about Sentinel and Shooting Arcade is that they were somehow about to make the 2600 use a light gun.  For a system designed in 1976 that's pretty damn impressive.

    Tempest

Weren't there trap shooting types of games the pre-dated the 2600 that used light guns? I think even Coleco had a console (Telstar?) with a light gun that was definitely out before the 2600.

  4. When my brother and I got our Atari around '79, we played the crap out of Combat and LOVED IT. :D I liked a lot of the air combat variations too, like jets. It was awesome to use the clouds for "strategy". Duck in to the cloud, bank hard right, come out in good position to get on the other jet's tail, and BAM!

As pointed out though, it would have been pointless without two players.

We also played a lot of Air-Sea Battle and Surround. Of course we had very few games, not like the hundreds I have now.

  5. I know this is a comparison of the two companies specifically on the 2600, but if you factor in the Intellivision you have to be impressed by Imagic. Imagic took advantage of the hardware differences between consoles and actually took the opportunity to improve the graphics. Activsion pretty much kept things the same between console versions. An example is Demon Attack on the Intellivision (fighting a boss ship). Plus Imagic came up with unique titles for the Intellivision that capitalized on the systems capabilities (Microsurgeon, Truckin', etc.).

Having said that, I'd still favor Activision on the 2600, but Imagic is a winner for me if you factor in other consoles.

  6. I recently took a bunch of left over garage sale items to a local Goodwill drop-off only location and asked the lady working there is she ever saw any of those "old Atari tapes". She said yes, but indicated that the store that receives the Atari games ends up throwing them out before they make it on the floor!! :o

I used to make excellent finds at thrifts. They just seemed to dry up after some time, and now it's not worth the time to go in them.

  7. I had tremendous success cleaning up the picture from a CV with a fuzzy/static output by really cleaning the power switch. You can possibly get a clue if this is the culprit by wiggling the power switch when it's on (not so much as to turn it on/off) to see if the picture changes or clears up a bit.

Unfortunately, to really clean the switch you need to desolder it and take it apart. Tuner cleaner alone helped, but taking it apart and using very fine sandpaper to clean it is what really did it for me.

The suggestions about the RF cables/box are very good ones too!

    Good luck.

  8. In my continuing efforts to clean up my collection, I'm trying to empty my duplicate/trade box. These are loose carts, no boxes/manuals.

All carts are $1 each. I would prefer to do PayPal only. Buyers pay actual shipping cost from 68144 area code.

Send me a PM for any carts you would like to get. I'd entertain offers on multiple items!

Most carts are in good condition, unless otherwise noted.

  9. In one of these threads someone described how to use a PC power supply with ADAM. They'll put out the proper voltages, they're small, cheap and available everywhere.

That's exactly what I did and it works great. I yanked a small powersupply out of a smaller desktop chassis and used it. I canabalized the connectors, wired one of the connectors in to the Adam, hooked up the power supply and away it went!

One of the CV FAQ's had the pinout of the power/printer connector. I used a voltmeter to find out which connector had the corresponding voltage. So it took a very minimal amount of electronics know-how.

  10. Is the jitter really that bad for you? What system and OS are you using? Have you tried to inactivate the mouse and/or keyboard input with the -iMK command line switch, to make sure that these controllers don't interfere with the Stelladaptor when playing a paddle game?

The jitter is pretty bad. Kaboom was basically unplayable once the pace picked up, maybe 3-4 rounds in to the game.

    I'm using Windows 98.

I haven't tried to inactivate the mouse or keyboard but will try that. Thanks for the suggestion!

  11. While I haven't had a chance to try the driving controller yet, I have tried the paddle and have a question. The paddles seem quite jittery. I know the paddles are good and have used them on a real 2600 with no problem (and no jitter).

When trying to get the Stelladaptor to work, I did go through the calibration procedure in the Windows settings. Could this be the problem? What type of joystick should I pick (I believe it's set to 2-axis now)?

I also had to make the Stelladaptor joystick #1 and switch my Gravis gamepad to joystick #2 before z26 would pick it up. Took me a while to figure that one out!

Overall I LOVE my Stelladaptor and have been having a blast with it! :D

  12. Bob Colbert (Okie Dokie) lives in the same city as I do (Omaha). I visited him several times and he's a great guy! After putting out Okie Dokie, Bob and his wife had a little girl. That took a LOT of his time, but he was still able to get a prototype of a new 2600 homebrew going (Sabotage). Bob and his wife had a second baby and this limited his time even further. From personal experience (my son just turned 16 months old), a baby takes a lot of time and attention, so priorities change.

Both Megamanfan and I have had a chance to play Bob's work in progress game. It was fairly complete but was missing scoring and sound/music as I recall. It was kind of like the US Game Commando, but with some interesting twists. Supposedly it was more like an Apple II game of the same or similar name (Sabotage). It would be cool if he ever finished it.

Bob put out Okie Dokie before the likes of AtariAge were around to help out with production of the carts. Bob's web page detailing his efforts is still up and can be viewed at http://www.atari2600collector.com/.

  13. I think if you're standing close to the edge of a log or turtle pack when the otter gets close to you, it bites you and you lose a life.

That's exactly how the otter works in the arcade version. There's an animated scene of him hoisting his upper body out of the water, exposing large teeth, and killing Frogger! :(

    Stay away from the otter!

  14. I finally got DB to work with the Roller Controller, although I don't honestly see how Coleco could have made their accessories MORE complicated.  Sheesh.  First I have to plug the RC power supply cord into the Coleco, then the Coleco power supply cord into that, then both RC controller cords 1 + 2 into CV controller ports 1 + 2, and THEN a keypad controller into RC port 1.. and I suppose if I wasn't REALLY ticked by this point I could have plugged a keypad controller into RC port 2, but at this point I said F#%K IT.  At least now I know that the Roller Controller I bought on eBay last year works. *heh*

That's cool that you got it to work. Next time I'm over, will you set all this up again? :P jk

If the roller controller is still hooked up, try Centipede!!! It's pretty good and the roller controller makes it mmm-mmm better. War Games is another to try with the roller controller.

  15. Hello!

I'm starting the process of thinning down my collection some. Rather than start straight off with ebay, I thought I'd see if any AA people wanted any of these Sears label games.

  16. Blockbuster been berry berry good to me! :D That's where I picked up the majority of my N64 collection. If you catch them right, you can get some great deals. And couple that with their Buy 2 Get One Free promotions and you make out like a bandit.

The games don't always have the original packaging, and they have gummy stickers on them, but if you want the game to PLAY, it's a great place.

  17. I have a boxed O2 and several boxed/loose games, including the Quest for the Rings board game, that I picked up from a coworker several years ago. I tried it and got some amusement from it. Not really up to the par of the 2600, but you had to give it some credit for what it was.

I've been trying to get MegaManFan to snap up this collection, but he has been resisting my attempts. ;)

  18. This is a pretty decent game, and I got quite a bit of enjoyment out of it, but as summed up by others it gets nearly impossibly hard and there are a couple vehicles you are forced to use that aren't fun (man, I hated that powersliding crap!).

Lots of destruction and mayhem though. If you can get the game cheap, I'd say it's worth spending some time with.

  19. For the guy who asked earlier in the thread, yes the Sega Genesis joypads had the same plug on the end of them, meaning I'm positive they'd physically fit into the jacks on a VCS, but I don't believe I ever tried it in practice (great idea, though).  And I can't seem to find my Sega right now (where the hell did I put that thing).

The Genesis joypads work great on a 2600. For a while I was using my Sega arcade controller (forget what it was actually called, a big heavy base with arcade style buttons and joystick). It worked well, plus it had TURBO. :)

I still prefer using the stock Atari joysticks though when I'm playing the 2600!
