  1. I seem to remember some literature back in the day that said the reverse (GG to SMS) was not possible due to some GG proprietary features. Something different about the hardware, so not exactly the same. Or that the display code for such a small screen was that much different. Had it been possible relatively easy, I bet it would already exist. Not sure if Sega would have released something like that for an older system though.

It's the palette, the Game Gear had a much larger color palette than the Master System to support the TV Tuner (and to really rub it in Nintendo's face)

  2. Indeed. Each game has its own little features that need to be programmed with respect to the hardware capabilities, and that is especially true for old consoles like the NES. The more "away-from-standard-machine-source-code" you try to make a programming tool, the less this tool can do, compared to what you want it to do for you.

Well I thought you could get around that by using the NES ROM Maker Maker. :ponder:

  3.

As for the best: if you REALLY want the d-pad and stick on the same gripping area for some odd reason, there's this:

    the super pad 64 plus:

    http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:gCE6Zrt7_C78EM:http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/alxbly/N64%20pads/InterActSuperPad64Plus.jpg&t=1

This is the two-handle Super Pad I was talking about above... is the word "plus" used to distinguish the two-handle from the three, or does it refer to the turbo and slow motion buttons? (the latter being absent on my Blockbuster model) Either way both are apparently just listed on eBay as "Super Pad 64" with no plus.

The hori is very overrated... I've seen tons of mixed reviews, but more often than not complaints.

I haven't used one, but from what I've seen the d-pad looks completely unusable at the very bottom like that... :?

  4. My second favorite is the "Super Pad 64" by Performance.

    Chris

Seconded, I dare say it's better than he nintendo brand controllers.

I third that as my favorite one. Amazing analog stick. Not the best build quality, but it works great.

Judging by pics and video I found by googling this, it appears there are two Super Pad 64's, one with three handles (really one handle, two "grips") that I had a lot of as a kid but then all broke, and the two-handled one I described above but without the Blockbuster name. The two-handle one was also apparently sold under the name Makopad 64. I'll have to look into these.

  5. I haven't fired up a real 2600 in a while, but when i did, I really liked the Pointmaster however some people don't care for it:

I bought a Logitech Attack 3 (PC Controller) hoping it would be good for 2600 emulation, and it is absolutely horrible. You have to move the stick too far for it to register, presumably it is analog and not digital.

  6. Wow, not only are there more than 10 Super 8 converters on ebay, but there's more than 10 available by 2 different sellers. So that makes over 20. But all of them are quite expensive. It's a little bit cheaper just to buy a clone system. I wonder if it is a new discovery that someone found or if it just means that it could be back in production due to the rising amount clones purchased showing how popular NES and SNES still are. Generally stuff made by Innovation is really flimsy and doesn't work that well so I would be a bit iffy about paying $80 for one of these.

    Are you including this one?

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 1704454528811?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=170445452881&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

It's $65 after shipping, $50 without. It doesn't show up on a search for "Super 8" or "Tri-Star", but if there's 10 available does that mean there are 30 on ebay at the moment? :P

    Also, I found some faq's

There's an inconsistency between them, however, as to whether the SNES Game Genie works.

  7. The Power Base Converter is basically just a pass-through device. The tech required to run SMS games is already in the Genesis/Mega Drive. The quality of the games on a PBC is identical to playing them on a real SMS (Minus a game or two that doesn't work). I'm not sure about the FM capability through it though.

When I said "worthless clones" I was more referring to the NOACS and SNOACs etc; I hear the SEGA PBC is very accurate.

Does anybody know, how does the Super 8 handle the FDS and Famicom audio? I hear it can run an FDS, but how well? Any known incompatibilities?

  8. This is just a dumb little poll I thought might create some interesting discussion. Come to think of it, I've never actually bought one of these but (I will soon and) I've wanted a Super 8 for a long time, and I noticed a flood of these along with the Tristar 64 being sold new in box on eBay all of a sudden (seller has 10+ available?!) But I don't have the cash right now and my SNES is dead. :( I remember reading about the Super 8 in like 2002 and it was burned into my brain as being less of a clone and more of an adapter (but it's still a NOAC from what I've read). I also may be picking up a Power Base Converter but I would like to hear what others think of these before buying any. What are your opinions? Are these all worthless clones or are some worth buying?

  9. Beating SMB1 by using the warp to world 4-1 then 8-1.

    Atari 2600 Space invaders.

Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 on Practice / Normal respectively, great games, but any difficulty settings higher then that I would get slaughtered. Hopefully my skill will improve over time

Rampart is also relaxing, until I lose. See above.

I also think the Master System / Game Gear Sonics are fantastic.

  10. Although I do agree with the idea that a game's absolute quality is irrelevant to the time it was released, there is something to be said for influence and originality... thus I voted for originally released titles because even though the hard work of homebrew creators should not be dismissed, if the originally published games did not exist, even the best quality homebrews would arguably not be the same or even exist without the older games' innovation.

  11. Suing? What?

  12. I've actually been having a problem with certain Master System games (like Wonder Boy in Monster Land) in Kega Fusion, where it seems like it replaces the normal 8-bit sounds with the Genesis' instruments, and I can't find any way to disable this.

I can't use Kega Fusion (I'm on a PPC Mac), but I assume what's happening is that the code for FM synth playback on Wonder Boy in Monster Land is being triggered. In the prefs for Kega Fusion, there should be some option to turn off FM synthesis or FM autodetection; once that's done, it'll go back to the usual SMS sounds.

BTW the FM synthesis module was only avaiable in Japan, but bizarrely, there are tons of US-only games that are capable of using it. There's a whole bunch of stuff about this over at SMSPower, including some new hardware to add FM synthesis to the US SMS. Ironically, you're being bothered by a feature that people have gone to great lengths to implement! :)

That's good to know actually, my main issue with this effect on Wonderboy is that the sound seems somewhat muted in comparison to the 8-bit, which used to be a problem when I was stuck with cheap headphones (now I have nice speakers). But there's still a lot of SMS games I haven't played yet, and I could see a lack of this synthesis hurting the experience of the games (like going from FDS to NES.)

  13. Sega Master System - Kega Fusion. See Genesis, above.

I've actually been having a problem with certain Master System games (like Wonder Boy in Monster Land) in Kega Fusion, where it seems like it replaces the normal 8-bit sounds with the Genesis' instruments, and I can't find any way to disable this. Gens Plus!, on the other hand, uses the classic Master System audio, so I use that. It hasn't been updated since 2008 however, and Kega is probably faster and more accurate other then that one issue.
