I'd join an AA discord server.  I'm not very active on discord as it is, though.  It's just too much usually.  I don't have time to read everything so I end up reading nothing but a few threads.  Kinda like on here.  But I did pop into the AA chat room on occasion when it was around.

Invision discontinued their Chat product a while ago, which is why the chat room went away.  It also added a fair bit of work as far as moderation goes.  I am going to look at either integrating another (third-party) chat module or integrate Discord into the forum (which would not require you to create a new Discord account, it'll pull your information from the forums).  I may install that and see how it goes.

Have you seriously considered either integrating Hexchat into this site or coding a native first-party IRC chatroom from scratch?
