  1. I want a 7800 but there is absolutely nowhere that has games. I'm surrounded by 5 Play-N-Trades and they don't have a single 7800 game. The 7800 never took off here on Long Island. The NES had a year head start thanks to test marketing in 85' and that pretty much destroyed the 7800.

I got a 7800 for $20 off of eBay and between eBay, CTCW, members here at AA and gaming expos I am having no problems at all getting games. As a matter of fact, I have a bunch of dupes you can buy off of me to get you started. PM me if you're interested.

  2. *A while ago, a friend of mine refused to believe that 2600, The Hacker's Quarterly was named in honor of the baud-rate of old modems. She was convinced the magazine was named after the Atari 2600, because it was "the best" and most powerful of all the consoles from that era.

Eh, there is no 2600 baud.

The magazine is named in honor of telephone hacking/phreaking. 2600, as discovered via Capt'n Crunch whistles, was the hertz tone that used to be used by the phone companies to gain operator access to the long distance trunk lines.

Yes, that would be 2400 baud.

Cap'n Crunch - are you referring to Winn Schwartau?

  3. Thanks guys for all of your input. I just wanted to know, what you guys think about the idea. I don't know who owns Atari right now, but I do know what Atari used to be. Maybe, its that fact that I am a lot older now,but I don't care for these new systems and their games. I beleive that this is the reason, why none of the new systems are doing good. Games are to high, systems over heat,to be honest. They are not even a video game system. They are a computer. I don't want a computer,I want a video game. I think this is why Atari is so special. They almost never broke down, never caused you a problem. The carts. never failed you. And you had fun. Remember when you tried to beat your friend, in getting the high score. now its about how the game looks. no fun factor. They games are so deep, and complex that you need to spend more money on a stratergy guide, just to see were you go next. I think we are heading for another, Great video game crash (Part 2) Thanks guys, for letting me vent. It feels good. Iam now off to play some Atari, Man its hell to get old!

I agree with a lot of what you said. With the exception of sports games, everything else is junk.

I started a thread in another forum regarding if the video game crash would happen again. I believe the title of that thread is "Will History Repeat Itself?"

I honestly believe that if someone can design an original 2D game that smells of the classic video game era and iff that game is a huge success, that it could open the flood gates for a comeback as you suggested. There's someone out there smarter than me that can figure out exactly what original and addictive could be in that regard as I am spent as far as what that something new and different could be.

But, for all this to happen is going to take a lot of luck, a lot of effort and nice big kick in the pants. This may be just wishful thinking and a pipe dream on my part.

  4. I didn't have a favorite arcade hang out back when I was a kid, but I do have two favorites now. The arcade at the mall is half classic machines like pacman, donkey kong, mario, galaga, and dig dug. The other one isn't really an arcade but a pizza place. They have two ms pacman machines, a crusin world machine, a donkey kong, a centipede, a golf game that I don't know the name of and phoenix. All but one of the ms pacman machines are the originals from when they were new.

    Sweet! Where do you live?

  5. Those two games you mention weren't produced with bAtari Basic. I think this was. There are limitations.

Perhaps there is a market or interest for games programmed in this language but I don't know why one would spend the effort using a language that has such limitations.

The original post asked for feedback which I provided. My preference is not to have blocky graphics ala "Superman." If this is not possible or the goal of this project, then disregard my feedback and move on.

  6. The thing was housed in a smoking environment - Pall Malls I may add. I Goo-Goned it and then alcohol'd it three times and I still have brown crap showing up on the rags...

Yikes. Reminds me of the time we cleaned my grandmother's house back in the 70s. I remember going over, and over, and over the paneling on the walls.

You are going to take the TV apart and clean inside it, right? :D

    I'm afraid to do that!

  7. Recommendations

    • The graphics are too blocky
    • I got lost in the dark cave and seemed like I was going around in circles. Maybe this was by design to get the character into a dead end. It would have been cool to have monsters attacking while in the dark cave.
    • What are those blocks moving sideways and falling on our guy? This is an example of where the graphics need to be improved. If the player has to ask what they are, then the graphics need improvement.
    • I do not like the other sound effects used in the game. They sound too much like what was used in the old Atari games like Superman.
    • Why are the monsters able to go through walls?

Um, you realize this game was made for the 2600 right?

Um, yeah - have you ever seen the graphics produced in Medieval Mayhem or Stargate?

  8. I currently have a 2600, 5200, 7800, Colecovision and C64. I have some holes to fill in respect to the carts I would like to purchase to complete my collection for each respective console. I am only buying games that I want to play, not trying to collect every cart produced for that console.

I am really interested in beginning to collect the old standalone consoles like Pong, Superpong and the old Odyssey consoles. For me that would be a real trip and hell for my wife. Now, my wife is not a nag or bad person, she just does not have the same appreciation for this stuff as I do. I'm sure others in this forum have the same reality.

Also, I would probably add the XEGS to my collection.

  9. Here are my commendations and recommendations. Keep in mind these are from a player's perspective and not a programmer's.

    Commendations

    • Nice concept and challenging game play
    • Nice intro screen
    • Our guy looks good graphically
    • The "Game Over" sound effect is good

  10. Atari 5200

    Pac-Man 10 mins

    Ms. Pac-Man 10 mins

    Centipede 20 mins

The only reason I played the 5200 was to test it on the new 19" TV I bought for $12 off of Craigs List. I bought the TV to have as a 4th TV for my retrogaming parties and will pretty much sit in storage the rest of the time.

  11. Dammit Albert - I personally need a middle finger icon - just so I can respond to Marty...

    Curt

What is the significance of the date 1972-2006 on the Atarimuseum site?

Nothing, 2006 was probably just the last time he updated the site. Isn't that right Curt? ;)

Would you be able to look at the hard copy of that newsletter I mentioned above? I'm dying to know what some of the prices were back in 1973. The PDF copy is not legible.

  12. The term "racing game" is a little vague, but there's:

    - B.C.'s Quest for Tires

    - Bump 'n Jump

    - Destructor (although not an actual racing game, but it's made for use with the steering wheel module)

    - Dukes of Hazzard

    - James Bond 007

    - Motocross Racer

    - Pitstop

    - Spy Hunter

    - Up 'n Down

You could also include "Fall Guy" in that list, although it's only an unfinished prototype.

OK - now which of those games besides Turbo and Pitstop utilize the driving controller?
