  1. Well, the title says 5200 vs. XEGS. Maybe these types of threads aren't a good idea to start considering the latest 'this vs. that' threads. Allan C'mon guy, I already put on the top of the post it wasn't a "which is better topic." On the top of the post, it states "5200 vs. XEGS". Holy crap guys, if it bothers you that much than don't bother posting to the thread. Matter of fact, I'll ask a moderator to lock the thread - it's not worth the verfluchte aggravation.

  3. Hell yeah! I caught hell for playing it because of the controversy surrounding the fact that the object of the game was to run people over. : ] Question I have is why isn't there a MAME ROM available for this game unless I am overlooking something? The version of MAME I have doesn't even list it as an option.
  4. ColecoVision is my favorite console. I love games like Pepper II and Mouse Trap and the fact that the CV games for the most part have a true arcade feel to them. The 2600 being my second favorite. Mostly due to the huge library available and I am amazed by what some have been able to do with this system pushing it beyond what it was originally intended to do.
  5. First of all, this is not a "which is better" topic. I'm building a collection of home console arcade ports. I've completed my 5200 collection rather easily with the exception of the home brews. Does it make sense to purchase an XEGS? Are 5200 and XEGS ports similar or are the differences significant enough to warrant purchasing the XEGS?
  6. exactly! I dont know what the 5200 freaks are talking about when they say the 5200 is better than the coleco. the atari didnt have a great library like the coleco. There are those that make an issue out of the ColecoVision "second rate" arcade ports like Pepper II and Mouse Trap which happen to be my two favorite and addictive CV games. Someone mentioned that the reason some of these games were under appreciated in the arcade is because of a more sophisticated game play. When playing it in the home, you have time (and no quarters) to spend learning the game. I find this to be very true. Mouse Trap, for example, is more sophisticated in game play than Pac-Man.
  7. I can't do anything with this monitor so he's going to have to refund my money include the return shipping. I can't understand - keywords "Galaga cabinet" & "19-inch" & "vertical" and I'm shipped a monitor that would be appropriate for an Asteroids cabinet and from a guy that has a page dedicated to Galaga technical info? And I apologized beforehand for asking him too many questions just to make sure that I would not be shipped the wrong part? I wanted to get this knocked out today so this thing could be up and running this week - guess that's not going to happen. Someone else chime in with a similar experience since misery likes company! : ] Well the vendor, Arcadeshop.com, won't pay for return shipping. Apparently it's my fault in his mind and I'm technically challenged. I don't see it possible mounting this vertically without a special mounting kit which I was left out of the loop on. Take it for what its worth - maybe you view this as ignorance on my part for using blind faith in purchasing what was said to be the part that I need. For the extra money, I could have purchased from Happ Controls who have detailed documentation onsite for the respective product. It's too bad that Mikesarcade doesn't sell monitors because I have gotten excellent customer service from them throughout this project.
  8. I have the control panel and marquee and will be buying a Galaga bezel as well. I have not decided on purchasing the side art as yet. The game will be powered by MAME32 and I have WinXP pretty well hidden. I had planned on mounting the motherboard and power supply to the cabinet but honestly there is no advantage to going through the trouble of trying to figure out how to wire up a remote on/off switch to the motherboard in order to gain a few feet on the cabinet.
  9. Back on topic, I just received my copy of Cosmic Avenger but I have not played it yet. I have found it taking much longer completing my collection of arcade ports for the ColecoVision than that of the 5200 which I completed in about a month. The number of ports are almost identical for both consoles but it seems that the 5200 carts are more obtainable and aren't as rich in value.
  10. Tape on the screen, is a lot different than 1 button preforming 2 seperate functions. I am pretty sure that would be considered a cheat. Which is the cheat - the tape on the screen or the controller? They would never be able to prove tape on the screen but would the controller be an obvious cheat? They don't have to prove anything, they even suspect anything, they will not validate your score. These guys take gaming records seriously. Take a look at their site and read the rules for score submission. I scored 4.8 million for a second place record, although I could've crushed the record had I scheduled my day better. Roughly 1 million points an hour and that was 4.5 hours tied up. Two pain in the butt issues in going for the record - number one is that the VCR I recorded on doesn't have a remote and I am not able to figure out how to record in anything but SP mode. So I had to trap my mouse when it came time to switch tapes. Secondly, on my first attempt, I somehow hit the "*" on the keypad which restarted the game after recording 1.2 million!
  11. That's awesome Congratulations! Are you going to try the skill #4 record? At least the game uses a 8 way controller, you can anticipate a corner, and make a smooth turn by pressing diagonally. The problem with mouse trap is that you move so fast and the distances between turns are so short. The way a game was programmed can really make things harder. Here's an example. In Burgertime the Arcade Machine the controller is a 4 way... you must hold the controller in a position to move and you can't change directions unless your lined up. Donkey Kong on Colecovision is the same way but at least the diagonals are ignored. Things really get rough when you use an 8 way controller on a 4 way arcade game, not only do you not change direction smoothly, you stop if controller is in a diagonal position.Burgertime on the Colecovision, unlike the Arcade Machine is programmed to use an 8 way so that you can use a diagonal to change directions without stopping or timing your direction change perfectly. ( press diagonally while running on a platform right before you get to a ladder to climb in a continuous motion without stopping) I want to surpass the record on skill #1 first but I'll have to set aside 8 hours to do it. Is that something I am willing to do over the summer time? I don't know...I could probably go up to 50 million if I wanted to but you got to draw the line somewhere. Besides, if you figure 1 million points an hour that's a ton of lost sleep and a high intake of caffeine. I want to turn my attention to Space Invaders, Galaxian Arcade (newly added at my request) and Freeway next. Freeway is only less than two minutes per game and I'm really curious as to how it was possible to score a 38 in that game. I haven't been able to get higher than a 32 which is two shy of Todd Rogers' (tied with 4 others) second place record.
  12. That's another one where the NES controller just doesn't work. That's a deal where the authors are like "well, it doesn't work but we'll make a few bucks on a classic, well-known title and let the gamer figure out a way to play it." From a comfort level, the NES controller was the best stock controller (out of all home consoles from the 2600 to NES time period) but overall the 2600 had the best stock controllers (including the paddles and driving controller) of any system.
  13. ColecoVision Super Donkey Kong 10 mins Galaxian 10 mins Atari 2600 Space Invaders Arcade 5 mins Space Invaders 10 mins Medieval Mayhem 15 mins Freeway 2 mins Frogger 10 mins I think it's time to breakout the 2600 for a while...
  14. ColecoVision Mouse Trap 350 mins 4.8 million on skill level 1 - good for second place on the TG scoreboard and shipping the tape out tomorrow I was on pace to crush the record but I had other stuff to do...I'll better arrange my schedule next time Let me guess what the top three will be for next week - Galaxian / Mouse Trap / Kaboom When does the week run - Mon through Sunday or Sunday through Saturday?
  15. I chuckled when I went back through and saw the title of this thread... Last night I could have set the record for Mouse Trap (skill 1) but had to settle for second place (just bad timing on my part). After 4-1/2 hours wrestling around with that verfluchte ColecoVision controller with sweaty hands is enough to give one a repetitive motion injury. I scored 4.8 million and shipping the tape out tomorrow...I was on pace to crush the record but I'll have to better arrange my schedule... But, the controllers are better than the 5200s...

  17. Pain in the butt! I told the vendor that I need a monitor for a Galaga cabinet, vertical, 19" and he ships out one that would mount on a shelf like a TV set. Title of the email thread "Monitor for Galaga Cabinet." I sent about 10 emails to make sure that I was getting the right part. He said he didn't have any PDFs to send me with the dimensions or diagrams. I took his word that he would send me the right part given that he has a link on his site for detailed Galaga Information! I guess that's the growing pains associated with these projects...
  18. I have one - Pac-Man by Tengen...I can't get Pac-Man to go where I want him to go with the NES controller
  19. I have found the maze games being tough with the CV stock controllers. Mouse Trap is an example where my mouse will "get stuck" (doesn't lineup correctly with the pathway) and I am fighting with it to get him to move through the maze.
  20. Don't you guys have a program where you download the MAME ROM and run a program "rom2CV.exe" that automatically p00ps these conversions out?

  22. Since my C64 is sitting on a shelf, I prefer the carts since I don't have to hook up the floppy drive when I want to "take it for a spin." Not that I'm incompetent - maybe lazy or impatient as I just want to "get in the car and drive."
