Most Unique Game of the Golden Age?
VectorGamer replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Ooh, yeah, good call. I forgot about that one, and it's one of my faves! I played Qix in the arcade only a few times and didn't really like it. I gave it a second chance when I purchased a cart for the 5200 and I now find it addicting similarly to Pepper II, which is another Exidy game, btw! -
Most Unique Game of the Golden Age?
VectorGamer replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Tempest is a good one -
What game do you consider to be the most unique that was released up to 1984? My vote would be for Joust - jousting on ostriches, egg collecting, pterodactyls and claws reaching up from the lava coupled with the sound effects make it unique.

What have you actually PLAYED? Weekly Top Ten for 2009
VectorGamer replied to cvga's topic in Atari 2600
It sux not having a top 10 this week! -
My personal opinion is that "classic" refers to (in this case) home consoles that were geared towards producing arcade ports of the classic era. Definitely up to 5200 and Colecovision and then the lines blur with the NES and 7800 given the small amount of classic arcade ports to those systems. To me the classic video game era is a time-range from Computer Space to 1984 and not an age as you would with "classic cars." So, I don't know what the heck I would call the PS2 besides referring it to whatever console generation it belongs to.

What arcade manufacturer of the classic era is your favorite? My pick is Exidy - Mouse Trap, Death Race and Circus were some of my favorites and I love the graphics.
-
As do I. Went to see both at the local theater and loved it, among many other great flicks back then. I saw Tron over at a friend's house on a rented laser disc player. The disc that was the size of a 12" record album and you had to take the disc out, turn it upside down and feed it back in halfway through the movie.

The reason I bugged my parents get me a 2600 was so I could play the arcade games in the home. We got the 2600 around the time that Space Invaders was released. Holy crap was I blown away! And I could play Circus, Missile Command and Asteroids! I am discriminatory when it comes to home arcade ports. As I stated, I wanted to play arcade games in the home so for the most part I expected the graphics to be close to the arcade. The raster graphics in Asteroids were forgivable as the gameplay made up for it. Add Galaxian to that list. Pac-Man, on the other hand, was a game conceived with a broken tail sperm. If the only alternative to toilet paper I have is an Atari 2600 cart, Pac-Man would be the first one I would use. Colecovision was made for arcade nuts like me. When it was released, seeing Donkey Kong first hand the first time was otherworldly. A few months ago I purchased a Colecovision which shipped with Mouse Trap and it brought back those same memories seeing the crisp arcade graphics and sound. It amazes me what some can do with the 2600. Medieval Mayhem and Stargate are prime examples.

Sorry man, but EVERY era had it's share of shovelware. Hell, even the during the Pong era that started it all, this was the case. I agree and have said so in other threads. Every generation has more junk than gems. Just look at the Atari 2600 library. I think the last part of the 2600 heyday before the crash was when shovelware was born(although I also see your point about the earlier saturation of the market with pong units). Tiny little companies popping up in great numbers out of nowhere, releasing junk games to make a quick buck--a good part of what caused the crash. After that, consoles started having lockout chips(partly) for that reason. Also, Atari was trying to make a fast buck on Pac-Man and ET as well as squeezing every last bit out of the 2600 to poop out arcade ports.

Your damn skippy. The latest console I have is a PS2. Most of the games can be had for up to $5. The sports games for the PS1 are well enough that I do not feel the need to upgrade to later versions released for a PS2.

Nothing wrong about recapturing childhood. Every year that goes by my kids lose more baby teeth and is a reminder of getting closer to "buying the farm." Countering this with the nostalgia associated with playing the classic games that represent, as you said, a simpler time assuages the fear of taking things for granted. Anywho, the classic arcade and ports to the home consoles are what I grew up with. The gameplay is simple to comprehend and the challenges presented by most games inspire the repeat plays. I still get angry when I lose a ship in Galaga. Aside from the sports games, I think the new games on Wii, Xbox et al suck. I watch my bro in-law playing an RPG and his character moves forward ten steps then you have to watch a 5 minute CGI video. WTF is that? I just want to play the damn game.

Sorry folks - maybe this was already posted but is there a timetable for release and if so how many carts will be produced?
-
It needs a 7800 controller. One button jumps, the other punches Do the 7800 Flashback controllers do the trick? No - the Flashback controllers are really NES controllers and have a different way of communicating with the host. Flashback II controllers, however, will work - but they don't have the second button which is what you need. How are they really NES controllers?

I bought an RF modulator from the Shack the other night to connect one of the flashback systems to the B/W 5" Sony Watchman I have.
-
Are the colors washed out? If so, it's normal. Someone else may have a more technical explanation as to what changes were made graphic wise on the 7800. I'm surprised Space Invaders doesn't work as it is fine on mine. Stargate doesn't work on mine.

$1600 for Colecovision and 60 games - What A Steal!
VectorGamer replied to VectorGamer's topic in Auction Central
This is exactly the reason and I decided to sell one of my 2 CIB CV systems (since I really have no need for a 2nd CIB though I have a hard time deciding to get rid of anything) and my loose games and keep only 1 CIB system, my CIB games, My multicart More importantly, I haven't had time to get it altogether but I want it to end on a Monday and around that time so I put it at a high price without any pics. Now if you are so offended, then don't bother with it. If you are into buying things without pics then go ahead. I'll pick out 60 games for ya. No one is forcing anyone to buy anything so why bitch about it? I asked nicely to please check back. I put a Number of games that I knew I could meet in case someone pulled the trigger as I have at-least 60 and the number will be exact when I have time to finish the listing but at a price that should give anyone pause to purchase (especially with no pics) so I can finish the listing tonight when hopefully I have more time. What I don't get is someone complaining about a listing that they wouldn't buy anyhow because it has no pics. It clearly says please check back. When I get it altogether, It will be adjusted price wise and a Best offer added or maybe, I just may pull the listing completely if I run out of time to finish it. Advice: Go complain about real problems like Corporate Bailouts and stop wasting your time on petty BS. LOL! -
It sounds like the "perfect storm." PCs were becoming accessible to consumers and console makers were spreading themselves thin. I think the former is the biggest reason, but I question if the money that could have been saved in R&D along with manufacturing failing products would have kept Coleco afloat to compete with the NES.

$1600 for Colecovision and 60 games - What A Steal!
VectorGamer replied to VectorGamer's topic in Auction Central
I don't know who Phantom is, but I would think one would have taken the time to post pix and a detailed description first considering the asking price. Heck, for that price I should also get a gift card to a local brothel of my choice. Was the "beloved" comment sincere or sarcastic? -

I guess that's you, huh? -
I can add a PowerJoy to my list of consoles! Picked it up last night at Goodwill for $2.97. I will post pix of the whole setup this Sunday morning and a review of how things went.
-
I have an N64 but that falls out of the time range of the classic era...

It seems like feast or famine... I scored a PowerJoy for $2.97 last night! -
Check this out Not even any pix posted for this stuff or a complete listing of the 60 games...apparently this person doesn't want to do any work for $1600. Does this person need the money for crack that it's being posted without any pix yet or a complete description?
