Memories of where and when you first played/saw this game
retrorussell replied to retrorussell's topic in Arcade and Pinball
Yeah, it's got the same giant-sized marquee like Jr. Pac-Man did. Speaking of which... Next game: JR. PAC-MAN, 1983 Bally/MIDWAY Okay entry in the Pac-Man series. Steer a preteen through a giant, scrolling maze. Child-related prizes float through the maze, turning dots into bigger dots that slow Jr. down when eaten, and destroy energizers! I think I first saw this at an Aladdin's Castle in Vancouver, WA. -
HSC Round 4.23: Bullfighte (Sega '84)
retrorussell replied to bigbee99's topic in Arcade/MAME High Score Club
I made a YouTube video of me playing this one. I just can't really get into it. Not a bad game but bullfighting just doesn't interest me. 15,920 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wvwXfapFZo -
Strangest place you've played video games

I somehow always felt arcade machines were a weird idea in a laundromat. I mean yeah, you don't really have much to do while your clothes wash/dry unless you have a book or crossword puzzle, but that's what most people seemed to do as they waited, not want to play arcade games. Saw a Choplifter and Dig Dug there once. -
T&F2 was definitely easier with turbo.. but you had to let off it and use the button regularly at just the right times (to jump, let go of something, etc.). I was never good at the diving.. I would hold turbo down to pick some random form and spin the controller around rapidly and hope for a good score.

Hey gamers! What games, to you, really were TONS easier to beat with the use of a turbo controller or slow-motion option? Any specific areas in the game where it was most useful? Or did the controller let you do some cool/wacky things? And what were the controllers? I loved using turbo controllers for RYGAR: There was a trick where you could hold turbo A and B as you walk off a ledge/cliff. Rygar flicks his ball and chain at a rapid pace and sloooowly falls off the ledge.. only to reappear at the top! Dangerous when a lot of enemies are around though, as you can get "unfrozen" and fall to your death if they nail you. Also: Using the NES Advantage's adjustable turbo dials when facing Achilles in TROJAN made me find just the right timing for my strikes to hit him just as he lifted his sword to strike me. And I don't remember which wrestling game it was for the NES but if you threw your opponent out of the ring, you could hold turbo punch down and they would never get back in the ring. They would get counted out.

A to Z console games! Add pics if you can!

INSECTOR X, Genesis. Released by Taito in 1989 and reworked for the Genesis in 1990. The Japanese version had cutesy graphics and the Genesis version had more realistic graphics and better music, as well as better weapons. I had this title and really thought it was one of the better shooters on the Genesis. Good detail on the boss insects! -

Video Pinball, Atari 2600 Great game, one of the 2600's absolute best games. I liked that even after the "tilt", you could still control the ball a bit; you just couldn't score anymore. -

When did OMSI have this game? My dad retired from OMSI last year and I was there hundreds of times from age 5 or 6 til now. I definitely do not remember there ever being any coin-op video games. Where was it located? Oh boy, I can't remember the layout of the old OMSI location.. but PPM was there probably only in 1983, as the game bombed mightily and was either dumped or the cabs were reused for other titles. I think it was in the same area as the electronic "card memory game", if that helps. I don't know how old you are Mxyzptlk, so you might be too young to recognize my clue. I never saw Loco-Motion. I see that Intellivision has a port. -
I remember my friends telling me about this game when it came out in arcades. I thought they were high. A chef being chased by hot dogs, pickles and eggs while trying to build hamburgers? WTF! Nevertheless, it turned out to be one of the all-time classics and one of the best Data East had to offer. The game is still deceptively difficult at times, even when you can almost always figure out which pattern of movement the enemies are going to make. You have to plan ahead and not get trapped, especially on levels where there are dead-ends. I liked how you could get killed just after dropping the last bun, and you are suddenly resurrected and move on to the next level! The Intellivision version is their best game, IMO. Very close to the original. I liked how there's a cut scene of the enemies approaching you just before each level begins, and then after you lose your last man, they finish the deal. Truly, game over! Hmm.. I'm always trying to think of future Halloween costume ideas.. Peter Pepper might have to be in the works!

I remember first actually playing Prof. Pac at OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) in Portland before it moved to SE Portland. OMSI was a cool place to be; haven't been back there since it moved. -

Another one to throw on the fire.. PROFESSOR PAC-MAN, 1983 Bally/MIDWAY No participation from Namco.. thank goodness. Horribly conceived misfire of a game; a memory test with Pac-Man characters. Various aptitude questions are asked in multiple-choice fashion involving memory or basic reasoning (what is the mirror image of these glasses, how many windows in this building were red [after showing a picture for a few seconds], etc.) and the player was given points for both a correct answer and an expedient response. The music was loud and annoying. Overall, a terrible experience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_Y-n18ca60&list=UU5G0wLc6c_P0jh1gTZbWwrw&index=14&feature=plcp -

Yeah, many people hated this version, but I liked it enough. The maze was totally different but like the arcade version you could get a pattern going and make the most of your reflexes. Enjoyable for me. -

Kid Niki, 1987 NES Odd but playable platform actioner with a spike-haired ninja with a spinning sword taking on all forms of weirdo enemies to save a princess. The arcade version by Data East had better graphics and gameplay but the NES holds a special place in my heart due to the hidden levels, all of which I have captured in one handy YouTube clip. -

Well I figure you can imagine whatever port you grew up playing by showing just arcade screenshots. It's too late to edit, but If I could, I'd replace em with Genny screenshots. Since I knew there were multiple home ports of MK I didn't say anything. It's all good. WILD ARMS, Playstation 1996/97 GREAT rpg with 3d graphics during the battle scenes (and chibi characters). You get to name your spells! -

Night Stalker, 1981 Good Intellivision game involving the player maneuvering through a maze, shooting robots and picking up guns when you run out of ammo. -

I liked, but was never terribly good at, Kick (Man). I had seen both versions. My best memory of it was at Chuck E. Cheese. Chuck E. was always looking around for some kid to hug or shake their hand, and I would try to stay far, far away from him. -

Ice Climber, 1984 Nintendo Decent platformer, but with HORRIBLE jump mechanics. Control an eskimo (solo or simultaneous play) trying to scale an icy structure to the top, to attempt a big bonus. -

Hey folks! One at a time, let's take turns going from A to Z with console game titles! Console covers handhelds, as well. Genesis, NES, PS3, PS2, Xbox 360, PS1, Game Gear, Phillips CdI, Neo Geo, Panasonic 3DO, Jaguar, Lynx, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Odyssey, Microvision, Pong-type consoles etc., ANY system you plugged in at home or on the road! Imports count too, of course. Pics of gameplay and/or the box/cd sleeve/jewel case/whatever would be cool too. I'll start: AFTERBURNER III, Sega CD 1992/93 Never played this game; heard it wasn't that great and didn't get much use out of the CD technology. Next letter: B -
Consoles you bought for one particular game
retrorussell replied to mbd30's topic in Classic Console Discussion
damn dude! NES has so many great games. That's what makes it such a great console. Gyromite is not one of those games. Super Mario 2, Bionic Commando, Megaman series, Excite Bike, Zelda, Goonies 2, Punch Out, RBI Baseball. ... These are just some of my personal favs. Of all game consoles EVER, NES is hands down the best supported with an amazing game library. I agree. When I saw my first NES commercial, it was for the whole R.O.B. set (the robot, the spinning top-thingy, etc.. really lame). But when I saw SMB being played at a local toy store, I was amazed at how deep and involving it was. Later on, I ended up getting more games for it.. and was blown away by some great titles. Then when they got a bit stale I got a Game Genie.. and the fun started ALL over again!
