I should have asked you before using your video. Sorry. I don't care at all if people use it. Not a problem, you don't have to ask my permission! I think it's cool what you did with it. Keep up the good work!!! -retro

BEST POWER UPS/WEAPON UPGRADES
retrorussell replied to retrorussell's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Good call on those, especially the triple shot holy water.. I whupped ass on bosses, especially Frank and Igor. Heh heh.. the item called "Power Of Sire" on Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night was damn sweet. It would cause damage/kill everything on the screen. Most regular enemies died instantly. Since it wasn't in crazy supply throughout the castle(s), you needed to save it until you bought the duplicator. Then the game was a total breeze. -
Interesting vid.. my Reactor video meets Queen's Another One Bites The Dust meets Crystal Castles.. with a smidgeon of Sinistar at the beginning! Neat-o!

BEST POWER UPS/WEAPON UPGRADES

The "Hypno-cannon" (I don't remember if that's the actual name of it or not) on Gaplus/Gradius 3. You catch flying enemies in it and after a while they become your allies, firing whenever you fire. You could catch like a total of 6. You'll definitely need them for the challenge stages. -

Lunar: the Silver Star (sega cd) has several. One I really like is where your party visits Meryod (I think that's the town) and comes across a girl who tries to sing for you.. and fails painfully. Nall replies, "Alex! Look at this! My ears are bleeding! I'm deaf!" XD -
What's your favorite videogame sound effect?
retrorussell replied to lushgirl_80's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The announcer's "Three!!!" was very satisfying when draining a trey, wasn't it? I love that game, even if it's devoid of any challenge. The "pweet!" sound when you try to fire a missile when you're out on Missile Command. Hearing the squash sound of the rock hitting the bad guys was very satisifying on Dig Dug. -
Yep.. even John Stockton would dunk on that game. The game had several unforgivably stupid moments.. one was the cpu getting awarded the foul whistle even before moving towards the basket, and the cpu player would then dribble drive, lay it in/dunk and get to shoot the FT. Huh?! Another was, for some bizzare reason, when you'd drive to lay it in and the ball would hit the rim, then fly a MILE out of the stadium. Or you'd shoot a free throw, and it would fly a MILE into the air before finally coming down to the hoop. Strange, strange glitches. I hated the general jerkiness of the movements.. Tecmo NBA Basketball was MUCH better.

What's your favorite videogame sound effect?
retrorussell replied to lushgirl_80's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I have several: The "wup wup wup" sound when you pick up a human in Robotron 2084. The startup sound for Defender is pretty badass. Sinistar roaring. The "bonus" sound it makes when you shoot a Galaxian yellow ship in flight. -
NEO GEO 4-slot cab with about 11 games total. I'm due for some more. Phoenix upright cab. Both machines in my living room, one across from the other. Dig Dug in my bedroom, colors washed out.. replaced the cap kit and it's still washed out, so I may have to resolder ALL the connections. Sucks.

BEST POWER UPS/WEAPON UPGRADES

Wrecking Crew's Golden Hammer. Knocks that pesky Spike down to the bottom floor and turns any wall into dust. -
I had the pleasure of many arcades in the Portland Metropolitan Area as a lad.. went to Chuck E. Cheese here and there in Beaverton.. as any kid will attest, lousy pizza but TONS of games. I would often see Chuck E. wandering around looking for kids to hug/shake their hand, and I would stay far, far away.

If you could have any arcade machine in your house...

Badlands (laserdisc). -
Something else that was REALLY dumb that I just thought of was how EASY it was to get stuck on Ikari Warriors. If you got killed, then did the ABBA trick (not the Swedish pop band) to get another life, you would often get placed on a spot where you can't move. Game over.

As much as the NES's Bionic Commando was a wonderful game to play, the final battle was kind of lame. I liked having a resurrected Hitler as a bad guy, but the final battle has you swing over to his plane, and having to fire one shot perfectly to kill him. Just one friggin' shot! If you miss, he'll kill you instantly.. but still kind of a lame final battle.

From Magic Knight Rayearth, Sega Saturn: Little kid: Wanna know a secret? I just pooped in my pants, hehehe. Squishy! -
Heh! I'm wearing it right now! What a coinkydink!

A number of Rico's Red Lion Pizza & Ice Cream Parlors (now Round Tables) in my area of Portland/Beaverton/Tigard had great arcades, but free carousel rides as well! Shakey's Pizza joints had good mini-arcades. I played a lot of Missile Command and Crash there, but I was never good at either. There was an arcade in Lincoln City I used to visit on the way to whatever hotel we'd stay at.. played some Mr. Do's Wild Ride (which wasn't very good) and later on some Fatal Fury 3.

BEST POWER UPS/WEAPON UPGRADES

I remember the first time I played Gradius.. I picked up the missiles and thought, "cool, now I can bomb the enemies below.." Well, it didn't stop there.. the missiles actually RAN along the floor until they found a target! Woo hoo! The infinite rocket launcher in the Resident Evil series is so bad-ass.. I did regret when the enemies got up close to me, because I'd blast the hell out of me as well if I hit a close target. This was remedied in a big way (with the bosses at least) when I picked up the Plagas Removal Laser. Nearly all the bosses would DIE without a full charge! Woot! -
Games that were WAY too easy for you..
retrorussell replied to retrorussell's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I beat the snot out of Atari 2600 Asteroids as well.. my sister and I rolled the score over numerous times. It's still a great game. Pitfall II for Atari got to be pretty easy almost right away for me. But I still love it. Mario Bros. for the 2600 was disgustingly easy. Mostly because each floor could only have one enemy on it at a time. Pro Wrestling was pretty darn easy on the NES but it's still far and away the best wrestling game on that system. -
Hey gamers! What games were just WAY too easy for you? They could be generally looked at as very easy by everyone, or it could be just a game that YOU were really good at, not necessarily other people. Or maybe you found a trick/strategy to it that no one else knew and they struggled at it? My entry: Super Pac Man It's all about quick reflexes, the speed button, and finding that super pac-pellet as SOON as you can. Oh, and finding regular power pellets to keep the Super mode going. I KILLED at this game.. maybe not mastered it but definitely would be on it for a lot longer than most people.

It sure did! The Tanooki suit and the P-Wing on SMB3.. I can-a fly! I'm a-flying! Look at a-me-a! (Man, Mario had an overly stereotyped accent.) -
BEST POWER UPS/WEAPON UPGRADES

Especially if you use the no-fire trick. The "EE" weapon on Guardian Legend was sweet.. the enemies that would fill the screen with destructible bullets would see them all destroyed at once by an EE and likely give you at least one energy-boosting item. -
What game are you playing today?

That referee with the weird-assed voice from Mat Mania would drown out the other machines with his pin count.. WUNNN... TWWOOOO... ThrEEEEEEE!!!!!! The first time I heard that I thought it was some clown-related game like Kick Man or Circus, or something like that with voice simulation. I got closer and saw it was a wrestling game and said, "That's a referee???" That's how weird his voice is.

BEST MOMENTS OF VIDEO GAME HUMOR

Yeah, Leather Goddesses Of Phobos is much like that.. only the whole game has text that is pretty funny. Once I came across a pan in a jail cell, and my chosen course of action was to f*** the pan. It replied, "You dirty pan f***er!!!" I laughed until it hurt to breathe.
