BEST MOMENTS OF VIDEO GAME HUMOR
retrorussell replied to retrorussell's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I cracked up on Yie Ar Kung Fu when you kicked Buchu in the nads and his eyes bugged out. The Gunbird series' cut-scenes were absolutely side-splitting at times. And almost every ending had me laughing out loud. -
BEST POWER UPS/WEAPON UPGRADES
retrorussell replied to retrorussell's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yeah.. not to mention kill Metal Man himself with one shot! The weapons in the Soul Blade/Calibur series that would gradually replenish your energy were pretty nice. I would have to play Super C again.. I barely remember a homing missile weapon. The Beam weapon in Phelios didn't last long but it sure would mow down your enemies. Getting to put on a shield, lazers, option pods and missiles with the "Konami Code" on Gradius was a nice boost. -
Go ebay! That's where I went to get mine. I've got some good rare ones like Waku Waku 7, Neo Bomberman and Real Bout FF Special. Relatively cheap and all reliable. If only they had a Super Dodge Ball for under 100 bucks..

Hey gamers! Sometimes video games show a light-hearted approach to the action onscreen and throw in some funny, goofy, darkly humorous, crazy, etc. moments our way. What are some you remember? I like "joke" weapons, like Sid's mop from Final Fantasy VII and Aerith's umbrella. Or Seung-Mi-Na's broom from Soul Calibur III. And I laughed when Leon looks up at Ashley from below when she's wearing a dress and she calls him a pervert in Resident Evil 4.

Hey guys! What were some of the best weapon upgrades or powerups from arcade/home games you can remember? I loved the "Spread" option with rapid fire on Contra. I would freak when I eventually lost it and had to go back to my crappy rifle.
-
Sorry.. ebay and craigslist are the most reliable game-for-sale resources for me, and they came up empty. I would check back there here and there though. Good luck!
-
Yeah, they did slip my mind. You can lump them in as "six switchers, four switchers etc." I forgot another system also I think Coleco or someone built which played VCS games also. If one of the mods want to add in whatever that system was called feel free to do so. Too late for me to edit the poll. Wp There was a Coleco Atari-cartridge system called the Gemini, which I had back in the mid-eighties. It had a terrific controller with both paddle and joystick on it and a fire button on the side. I always play my Atari 2600 through Stella. Not all the sounds are correct but I don't care.

Yeah, how could I forget about Zoo Keeper! That was one loud game with really irritating noises. The game itself was fun, though.

Bought a Dig Dug upright earlier this year. Colors are washed out; replaced the cap kit and it's still funky.. maybe I need to resolder ALL the caps.

Hey, thanks Flightsuit! My other alias is indeed CrazyClimber80.. I was gonna go with a "retro"-something name and they were all taken so I went with my fave game as a youth.. Some Exidy games were a bit loud. I remember there was a weird sound during the game over/segue to high scores screen that would kind of boom through the speakers on Mouse Trap.

I really don't know.. around what year do you think? Any other details?

What were the hardest arcade coin-op games?

I could get to the chopper easily enough on 005, but that was usually about it. He would bomb or shoot my ass into next week, if I didn't collide with a tree or balloon first. -
Funny story! You should've just said it was yours and took all the credit. Glad to see people enjoying my videos. I'm trying to show the games that were a bit rare that I came across and wanted to see if people remembered them very well. There's a few other YouTubers that are doing a lot of rare arcade game videos, and I'm trying not to duplicate them.

They're not radioactive, they're made of lava! Not that non-moving lava with very straight edges makes any more sense. Really? Does it say that in the manual? How stupid..! Too bad, 'cause it's a great game..

I'm sure they could have adjusted the volume but I'm guessing unless the machine had a pot or two go bad or something they probably didn't screw with it (or let someone who knew how to fix them screw with it). I faintly recall a couple machines being that way, I guess you could just state the titles you remember always being at a certain high volume. Anyhoo: Ones that just boomed for me were Time Pilot 84, Lost Tomb, Sinistar, Defender, Robotron 2084, and the pre-round music on Demolition Derby.

Hey gang, What were the loudest arcade machines you can remember? The ones that you clearly heard the booming, zapping, crashing, etc. from over the other machines. I hated when they were just as loud in their attract/demo mode. Shut up already!

Bull Fight was pretty hard to get a rhythm going on, I thought. That bull would twist around so quickly while you were trying to stab at it, and you'd quickly end up on its horns and it would fling you into the audience. And usually when you think you killed it, it got right up again and got a good deal meaner. I never cared much for Congo Bongo due to a) its difficulty and b) its terrible collision detection. Damn it, I did NOT jump in the lake! I could never get the hang of Defender or its terrible controls.. do I REALLY need a reverse button? Can't I just pull back on the controller? The Pit. Bulls***!!! I keep falling in because the platform falls under me so quick and I have just this itty bitty space to maneuver to and go up. Samurai Nihon-Ichi is an understandably one-hit kill game (with swords involved) but you can get surrounded by enemies and knife-throwing birds and you have to act SUPER quick. I was never very good at Space Panic.. once I had to face the stupid green enemies that needed to fall 2 stories, I was hopeless. Super Zaxxon was way too friggin' fast! What happened?? -
That would make a nice little pong console with builtin monitor... Don't you see it? Yeah, actually.. big dial controls would be a natural fit. And the woodgrain mini-cab would be a nice retro touch! Some other things I learned from Atari.. If you don't like the rubber grip on the joystick, it comes right off! Sega Genesis controllers work just fine on the Atari 2600. Radioactive walls and floors are common in the depths of mine shafts. Tripping is good strategy in 2-on-2 hockey. Flying over and destroying the same set of 3 tanks over and over again is pretty damn boring.

If you weren't careful, the original Fatal Fury and Art Of Fighting could kick you around. To this day the original Geese Howard is the hardest boss I've ever faced. Jail Break is b.s. hard, borderline impossible. Break Thru can be pretty tough. Mystic Marathon was a bit of a pain. -

Huh.. some of the recent entries were pretty easy for me. Rally-X wasn't really that hard (I could get to round 6 or 7 at least), Xevious wasn't TOO hard, Gyruss was pretty easy, and so was Elevator Action (I was pretty good at that one). I was pretty good at Do! Run Run as well. -

Bagman was a bitch for the longest time for me. Venture was super hard.. I HATED those 2 trolls in the maze that lets them loose after about 5 seconds, then they just fly after you (and of course, find ways to avoid your arrows). Targ was difficult for me, but then its sequel Spectar came out and it was crazy easy. I could never get into Gravitar. It was too hard for me to maintain interest. I was never any good at Star Castle.. it's just one of those games that you need to find a strategy to be successful. You can't really just pick it up and kick its ass. -
Yep. If you look at the pic in the manual where it tells you what everything is, they're described as "cathedral radios". Wow.. that makes even less sense! The game is based on the Keystone Cops, a comedy movie series from the early 1900s. Radios were big then. Example: I see.. well, I still couldn't have figured it out from the Atari graphics. That's another thing we learned from Atari.. giant old radios are dangerous!

I always thought the radios were the strangest... they're awfully big compared to your guy, and why is it that radios are dangerous, anyway? Is that what they are? I couldn't tell. Good old Atari 2600 graphics, love 'em or leave 'em.
