Got sucked into the space time continuum on the plane of existence at the temporal or one of the three spatial coordinates. Research is still being done to determine the exact location. Disruption to the continuum can have serious repercussions and disastrous effects.
Chickybaby's got a new avatar! Maybe I'll get one someday...

Hey,So I came home after a week vacation and went to turn on my JVC CRT and nothing. It's really strange because there was absolutely no sign it was going bad. Anyway, its time to upgrade to a new flat screen I think and I've been out looking at a couple. I don't need, nor do I have the room or funds for a large TV so I'm looking for something between 22 and 32 inches. However, the question is now as to whether I get a TV or an LCD computer monitor.
I'm leaning more to a TV since I'll need a co-axel input to hook up my 2600/Genesis etc and an HDMI for my Xbox 360. I'd also like to hook up my Macbook to whatever I buy. Cable is the least of my concerns, I do have a digital cable box but it is not used all that much. I have a 19 inch CRT in my bedroom which could be used primarily for retro-gaming as well.
What are you guys using?
Seems that the LCD screens/plasma TVs etc have a pretty short life span from what I see in various places around the net. I'm sticking with good old CRT monitors and TV sets for now as they last forever, especially since these days you can get used ones for a song/free. Maybe in a few years they'll figure out how to make a seven hundred dollar flatscreen that lasts more than two or three years.

Sears is still selling them to this day-For those who don't know, be forewarned: those Excalibur versions suck pretty bad. The Space Invaders wouldn't be so bad except that the playfield is two screens wide, so when you get all the way to the right, you are then transported to the left side of the second half of the playfield, invariably with an invader above you who kills you. I bought this game for $4 at a swap meet and am still unhappy with it, although it looks cool on my shelf.
The Frogger wouldn't be so bad except that for some unknown reason, the screen is reflected with a mirror which makes it hard to see, lots of glare, etc.
If I remember correctly, I think there are youtube videos of each of them for anyone who wants to see.
The old VFD games were much better. It's a shame, since the new Excalibur ones are a near-miss, but a miss just the same.

In 2004, Delphine Software, the original developers of Flashback, went bankrupt. Flashback is now considered "abandonware", so anybody with the skill to port it can sell it without paying a dime for the rights. No, no, no, a thousand times NO!
repeat after me, "There is no such thing as abandonware"
Whoever bought the skeleton of Delphine at the bankruptcy liquidation owns it.
If you port it, and it gets visible enough, they will find you (or more correctly, their lawyers will).
You are correct, sir! Only if it comes to pass that copyrights expire, or it is freely given(like some Vectrex stuff), can you do as you like, although sometimes it seems to be gotten away with. "Better Mario Bros," anyone? That one still surprises me. The big N must be starting to slip...

Target has the new Pac-man ones in post #39 above also for $19. I got one and it's really nice. All of the previous games of all Namco plug and plays are included, except Ms. Pac-Man. The packaging is a smaller blister pack and not the large box shown above. I guess they just keep redoing them.

Yeah, they're pretty expensive on Ebay. With as many people here that said they hated them, I just thought someone would want to dump theirs off. I just got a couple off Amazon for about ten bucks each. Thanks for responding though.

Why would that mean you can't scan it?It would completely de-value it, wouldn't it?
Not if it could still be clear what was the original and a repro, such as if you put a huge watermark on each page.
Or just use OCR software or type it in so the content is there for us folks to read

I'm definitely interested in using a thread of this nature, as I certainly have some stuff to offer up and have seen some items I would like to have. I have yet to actually use this one since it seems to be out of date. I'll subscribe so if someone starts a new one, and I'll know and will use it.

Quantity and the extreme amount of available choices often meant that one would spend more time doing research than actually playing the games! Quantity alone does not make for good gaming.Sorry man, but EVERY era had it's share of shovelware. Hell, even the during the Pong era that started it all, this was the case.

I agree and have said so in other threads. Every generation has more junk than gems. Just look at the Atari 2600 library. I think the last part of the 2600 heyday before the crash was when shovelware was born(although I also see your point about the earlier saturation of the market with pong units). Tiny little companies popping up in great numbers out of nowhere, releasing junk games to make a quick buck--a good part of what caused the crash. After that, consoles started having lockout chips(partly) for that reason.
I enjoy classic games for most of the same reasons it seems everyone else does. I have a bit of nostalgia for them(esp since now I can get every game I couldn't when I was a kid), I sometimes like the quicker and simpler gameplay, the games are affordable, and the good ones have that 'real' factor--the games had to be fun since there wasn't much window dressing to carry them through.
I'll also say that it's just plain cool to have a 2600. People are always impressed to see its faux woodgrain loveliness sitting by my TV, reacting with big smiles and asking to play games.

Thanks for the pics! What games are on the Capcom one? I've never seen it.Commando, 1942, and Ghosts 'n Goblins. The porting was done by frequent TV Games developer HotGen. I'm not well-versed enough with any of these to know how close they are to the original arcade releases, but I think they're pretty close. The only difference I ever noticed was that the sound glitches out a little bit when you do a roll in 1942.
The original press release for this TV Game listed the game set as 1942, Ghosts 'N Goblins, Mega Man, Gun Smoke, and Side Arms. Obviously, things changed over the course of the nearly 2 years that passed between announcement and release. The back of the retail box advertises Mega Man as being available soon as a GameKey for this unit, but, of course, that and most other GameKeys never materialized.
Interestingly, about a year after the original press release, another one (see this) announced an expanded game set for the planned GameKey line. Now, the set included Commando, Mega Man 2, Mega Man 3, and Street Fighter II: Championship Edition. Particularly unusual about this announcement was that just 2 months prior, Radica had announced the release of their 2-player Sega Genesis plug-and-play unit with Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition and Ghouls 'n Ghosts. So, it looked like we would end up with one unit reproducing an arcade SFII, possibly with only 1 player, as well as another, 2-player unit reproducing the Genesis SFII. As things turned out, only the latter made it into the public's hands (and retailed for what I thought was a ridiculously high price, either $35 or $40).
That has to be more information than anyone wanted to know about this. . . .
onmode-ky
Thanks for the info. As I said, I have never seen that Capcom unit. Many times when I have looked for better info on similar plug and plays the dialogue gets sidetracked by arcade 'nazis' going nuts about the lack of perfect accuracy compared to arcade originals. Thanks for the straightforward info.

I was complaining a bit on my Lynx II battery lifetime on the lynx forum,, but then people said the nomad or some other handheld were even worse. So I wonder what handhelds are out there and how long the battery lifetimes can be
I've only had the lynx 2 running about 5 hours on some (nonchargeable, ugh here goes my fee to the WWF) batteries
The Nomad and the Gamegear both only run a couple of hours, maybe a bit longer. Comparatively, your Lynx doesn't sound half bad.

My most useful mod was a two button joystick. The games Spy Hunter, Defender2/Stargate, and Star Voyager have secondary weapons that required pressing the button on the SECOND joystick. How useless is that? So I installed a second button on a joystick and wired it into the second joystick port. That's a mod I've been thinking of doing for a while. You happy with location of second button?

Received my carts today. Thank you!

Even as bit rot settles in on more and more circuit boards and chips over time, I'd say that demand will dwindle with supply and high value will only ever come to certain 'special' machines(Pac-man etc) in pristine condition.

Man I'd sure love to see you post the Pitfall one! ...or any others for that matter.

bumpIf I understand what you want to do correctly, it is not possible. You can not wire a FB2 board to a 2600 cartridge port and play the games.
Yeah, that's kind of it. Was just kind of a crazy idea I had. I just really like a few of the games in the FB2, but also love several games that are incompatible with it. Dream on, I suppose. It my twisted mind, it just seemed like it might be possible to substitute a real 2600 for the Atari-on-a-chip in the FB2's signal path somehow.

Like some others have mentioned here, I have pretty much given up on Sonic games. Last one I played was "Sonic the Hedgehog" for 360, and as much as I love Sonic, it pretty much blew. Too much of the quicktime-like events described above and buttloads of 'cheap' deaths due to camera problems. Same camera problems as Sonic on Dreamcast--have they not learned or improved anything? That's been several years ago! I might buy one of the games mentioned above if it was used for $4. Actually, I take that back as I know it would just be more of the same

I don't need to have my collection be "proper and complete." A large portion of what is listed for this collection is crap. Every generation has more junk than gems.
