Was there recently an Atari 2600 warehouse find?
Linkz1 replied to homerwannabee's topic in Atari 2600
Was the Stargate a PAL one as I bought from them as well and it has a P sticker on the back and I'm assuming that means PAL... Nope, this was NTSC. As for Pitfall II, that arrived on Monday. It looks to be as advertised...I've not had a chance to test it yet, but I'm thinking they did me well again. However, after hearing many negative things here, I'm going to stay away from them in future. -
Update on my Grandmother and other things...
Linkz1 posted a blog entry in I Can't Think of a Catchy Title
I had the chance to see my grandmother over the weekend, and she was doing fairly well. She had just started moving things out of her body that day so she was making progress. She should be eating solid foods by now, and is expected to be out of the hospital by the end of the week. In other news... I picked up GTA:IV for the PC this weekend...so far so good! This is truly an impressive game, and after playing for about 2 hours, I'm really getting into it. My only complaint is all the hoops I had to jump through to actually install the damn game. Oh well...not much you can do. I also bought Docomodake DS on Friday and have been having a great deal of fun with this budget title. Great puzzles and colorful characters make this a great game to play. Anyways...so long for now! -
Video games back in the spotlight... again.
Linkz1 replied to STGuy1040's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I saw this article yesterday...people will find any excuse to rag on video games. -
Geez I really hope you're being sarcastic Seriously...that's almost a line a wouldn't cross when joking around. This game does look pretty freaking incredible for a DS game though. I'm looking forward to getting it.

My grandmother is sick...
Linkz1 commented on Linkz1's blog entry in I Can't Think of a Catchy Title
Thank you for the kind words. I'm hoping I'll be able to see her some time this weekend. Hopefully her condition has improved and she's healed up enough to eat solid foods...I'm sure after she can get some real food in her she'll be feeling a lot better. From what my mother was saying, she will have to go for chemo...ironically enough, I got a letter from the Red Cross yesterday about a blood donation I gave last week, apparently I have a lot platlets in my blood which patients who are going through cancer treatment need, so needless to say I'm definitely going to be donating my platlets...who knows, they could save my grandmother! -
If Docomodake would turn into some kind of Transformer that would make the game even better!

Earlier this week my grandmother (on my mother's side of the family) went to the hospital for a colonoscopy. Nothing spectacular right? Well...during the exam the doctors located a growth in her intestines and they sent her to surgery immediately to remove it. After running some tests, it turns out it was cancerous rather than benign. This all happened on Monday. I've yet to have a chance to see my grandmother, but I hear she's feeling very weak. I'm not sure if she's been able to eat anything since before the colonoscopy (since you need to cleanse your system before the procedure), as of Wednesday she still hadn't eaten any solid foods. The other reason as well, is because of the way the intestine is healing, if she were to eat solids it could rupture the sutures that are holding everything together before the intestine has healed fully. I'm probably going to go visit her this weekend. This isn't the first bit of cancer to hit my family. My father had skin cancer about a year or so ago. My uncle had testicular cancer and my grandfather had cancer as well, and now has diabetes. So not only am I worried for my grandmother, I'm worried about my future health, as well as my sisters. I know there isn't much that can be done...but it's just scary to think that cancer is prevelant in the last two generations of my family.... Anyways...hopefully my grandmother is making a good recovery. Here's to her health!

I just saw a review for this over on Classic Game Room this week, and what originally looks like a bad side scroller starring a mushroom actually seems to be an interesting little puzzle/side-scroller adventure featuring Docomodake. Who/what is Docomodake? It's the advertising moscot for a Japanese mobile phone provider...and no, the game does not even mention cell phones...from what I've seen it looks like a fun little game to pick up. Anyone else interested in Docomodake?

My first game was Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble for the Game Gear. I remember saving up my allowance like crazy to buy this game. God...that was what, in 1994 I think? I remember I bought it at the old department store Caldors (if anyone remembers that!) and I remember playing it until I beat it. I'd play it all the time...I'd wake up early on school mornings just to play it! Man, those were the days.

You hit the nail right on the head. Today's video games now have production values almost on the same level as major motion pictures (and Hollywood has been in the toilet for awhile now as far as I'm concerned). Game makers are becoming increasingly more concerned over how does the game look and sound over how does the game play and engage the person playing it. This is why I've yet to buy either a 360 or PS3. These systems are basically scaled down computers that do nothing but play games, but aside from the steep price tags, the games that have been released (for the most part) seem to lack the soul that has been part of gaming since Pong arrived in arcades in the 70s. EA has certainly played a role in this. Instead of constantly embracing challenge and using it as a way to make its own games better (like they used to do...try playing their first NHL game on the Genesis...that was truly fun!) they instead buy out the smaller companies or IPs so no one else can use them. In the last few years, I've noticed a number of games being published by EA that up until the point I purchased them, I had no idea they were involved. They're almost like the Microsoft (as much as I like Microsoft as a software company *dons flame resistant armor*) of the video game industry. However, unlike Microsoft, who faces stiff competition from the likes of Mozilla and Apple among others...EA doesn't have a real rival because they've bought them all out! I think the problem is also the difficulty and complexity of programming games today versus 30 years ago. I mean, today we can go around and hack existing Atari game roms or create our games because the language is so much more simple than today's consoles...not to mention, you need special hardware in order to develop for the modern consoles. So it was totally feasible 30 years ago that a twenty-something year old in their basement could write the next big game. I think I'm rambling here so I'll wrap it up: I'm not sorry for EA. They killed competition in video gaming, and have put quantity and style over quality. They're not the only one's responsible, but they are a big reason why things are going down hill.

From where?

Tell me about it...with how much they go for on eBay...I want me one!

I think there's always the possibility. More importantly...was Shigeru Myamoto on the 'shrooms when he conceived the ideas for Super Mario Bros?

I just got myself a CIB copy of Street Fighter II: Championship Edition for the Genesis on eBay for about $6. I'm guessing this is a pretty good deal, not to mention I have the 6-button controller for the Genesis so I'll be able to fully enjoy the game...so just wondering...who's everyone's favorite fighter? I'm pretty much a Street Fighter virgin so I have no idea who I'll end up using...but I'm thinking Chun Li.

Best Classic Games for Old PC w/Win 98?
Linkz1 replied to Fort Apocalypse's topic in Classic Console Discussion
If your kids like Star Wars, there's a few games that would be perfect. X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, Dark Forces and Jedi Knight to name a few. Jedi Knight can run without 3D graphics acceleration as well. -
Laugh all you want. This is why I run out of space so fast...I love collecting games CIB.

PS3: Difficult to Program For on Purpose?
Linkz1 replied to Linkz1's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I agree with this Sony probably figured whatever advantages the Cell Processor had outweighed the difficulties in programming for it, but of course they were expecting their $500 console to dominate against the cheaper 360 and Wii and it didn't quite do that. That's usually the case when they feel they can win by having the best technology under the hood. I mean...if Sony actually produced some first party games (like they used to), then maybe they could afford to take a loss on the consoles and lower price because they'd make up for it on software sales? I dunno...this has worked in the past. -
That's going to happen to me after I finish collecting all the games I want...which seems to grow with every new game I learn about!
-
Is this a way of protecting yourself from the "I dunno, it may or may not work, I don't have anything to test it with" sellers? Exactly. I don't want to waste money on a console that doesn't work unless I'm buying it with the intention to fix it. Good point. I'm often tempted by the console-only sales, but I've never pulled the trigger. I think I'll take your advice and avoid those from now on. Depending on the console too, it's not always a good idea as some of the cables and power adapters are harder to come by than for other consoles. Like the 32x...the cable to connect it to the Model 1 Genesis is almost impossible to find...I got lucky when I got my 32X as it still had it.
