Earlier this week my grandmother (on my mother's side of the family) went to the hospital for a colonoscopy. Nothing spectacular right? Well...during the exam the doctors located a growth in her intestines and they sent her to surgery immediately to remove it. After running some tests, it turns out it was cancerous rather than benign. This all happened on Monday.

I've yet to have a chance to see my grandmother, but I hear she's feeling very weak. I'm not sure if she's been able to eat anything since before the colonoscopy (since you need to cleanse your system before the procedure), as of Wednesday she still hadn't eaten any solid foods. The other reason as well, is because of the way the intestine is healing, if she were to eat solids it could rupture the sutures that are holding everything together before the intestine has healed fully. I'm probably going to go visit her this weekend.

This isn't the first bit of cancer to hit my family. My father had skin cancer about a year or so ago. My uncle had testicular cancer and my grandfather had cancer as well, and now has diabetes. So not only am I worried for my grandmother, I'm worried about my future health, as well as my sisters. I know there isn't much that can be done...but it's just scary to think that cancer is prevelant in the last two generations of my family....

Anyways...hopefully my grandmother is making a good recovery. Here's to her health!

Has anyone heard of the review show, Classic Game Room?

It's probably the best and most unbiased (unless we're talking about the Sega Genesis) review program on YouTube. The show originally started back in 1999 as a small side project for two young web pioneers for the website USALive.com. Unfortunately, after a year, the site folded and the show went dark. Then in late 2007 it was revived. Now it has a thriving channel on YouTube, and it's site can be found at www.classicgameroom.net. I absolutely love the way these reviews are done, and most of all, that there's such a focus on classic games. There's a ton of hardware reviewed, and an occasional appearance of the guy's dog!

So yeah...go check it out. It's pretty damn entertaining.

I had the chance to see my grandmother over the weekend, and she was doing fairly well. She had just started moving things out of her body that day so she was making progress. She should be eating solid foods by now, and is expected to be out of the hospital by the end of the week.

    In other news...

I picked up GTA:IV for the PC this weekend...so far so good! This is truly an impressive game, and after playing for about 2 hours, I'm really getting into it. My only complaint is all the hoops I had to jump through to actually install the damn game. Oh well...not much you can do.

I also bought Docomodake DS on Friday and have been having a great deal of fun with this budget title. Great puzzles and colorful characters make this a great game to play.

    Anyways...so long for now!

I've never been a big fan of this holiday. It's probably because I'm not Irish, either way, I've always been quite lost when March 17th rolls around every year. To me, this day is nothing more than my best friend's birthday (can you guess what his parents named him?). I live in central Massachusetts about an hour away from Boston so a lot the "festivities" are lost to me. Granted, the city of Worcester (pronounced wus-tur) has their annual parade every year, but I never go.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the drinking aspect of this holiday. I'm always happy to engage in a good drink...but sadly, St. Patrick's Day always seems to fall right in the middle of the week, the worst time to go into work with a hangover.

No...I guess I may just never "get" the whole reason behind this holiday. Even so, I still enjoy wearing green...though I don't have any on today...and I may get myself a nice six pack of Guinness when I get out of work tonight. I wish you all a happy St. Patty's Day! And may the luck of the Irish be with you.

This is a paid commercial for the Macintosh Peforma from Apple...it's from about 1995...I remember watching this back then and begging my parents to get us a PC...do you remember it?

I've heard numerous stories about how unplayable the Swordquest games are, and that they're some of the worst games for the VCS. I've also heard the contrary, that they're rewarding games that challenge the player to solve a complex adventure. Considering how much I like E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark, which are both maligned for their...er...unplayability, I figured I'd give the Swordquest series a shot.

I bought Earthworld and Fireworld on eBay yesterday, both with manuals which I know for Atari adventure games is key to even understanding what is happening (E.T. puzzled me for a while until I checked the manual on AA). So I'm essentially a fan of the adventure games for the Atari, I've played Adventure, Haunted House and the aforementioned E.T. and Raiders. I've liked all of them. However one thing I notice with Haunted House and Adventure: they're too simplified! Granted, they're meant to appeal to a broad audience, but weren't E.T. and Raiders of the Lost Ark supposed to do the same?

Which brings me back to the criticisms of Swordquest. I've seen YouTube videos (mostly of prepubesent boys swearing) where people will attempt to "play" games like Swordquest and claim that it sucks because they have no idea what the hell they're doing. I think the adventure games are meant to make you think...you need to read the manual before you start. It's not like these are arcade games that you can just plug in and shoot aliens up with. Maybe that's the trouble with trying to get honest opinions on Swordquest...a lot of the people out there probably never played it or understood what they were doing if they had.

I think this is what makes the old games better than the new ones...there's no tutorials! You were always expected to read the manual and understand what the goal is well before you plugged in the cart and flipped the power switch. Maybe these folks should try playing these games without the expectation that the graphics are supposed to be lifelike, and that the game can be solved without a manual.

Then again...maybe these people shouldn't be playing Atari in the first place...

Ever notice how the news tends to trivalize and sensationalize every story? Ever notice how the evening news will take the smallest most insignificant story and turn it into their top story and focus on it for nearly 3 hours?

    Me too.

I can't pinpoint exactly when it happened, but the news is definitely a lot different now than it was even ten years ago. The anchors that I grew up watching, many of whom were the best in the business in the Boston area, have either retired or have been fired. Instead, we have a bunch of people at the news desk who look like they just got out of college giving us our daily dose of "news". Instead of focusing on real stories, they focus on the celebrity gossip. Instead of telling us what's happening in the world around us, they focus on the daughter of a fire fighter who just lost his life in a fire, melodramatically playing some sad sappy piano music as a lead in to the story where the young woman is bawling her eyes out.

    This is not news.

Now, to be fair, this is really only one station in Boston that does this the majority of the time...starts with a "s" and ends with an "even". So anyone from Massachusetts will probably know exactly what I'm talking about. However, channel 5 and 4 (our two other big broadcast news channels) have been inching slowly but surely towards this style of news in the last few years. What's worse, now with the advent of digital TV, all the channels, with the exception of 5, have upgraded their sets to have these semi-futuristic news layouts...channel 7 is our worst offender yet again as most of the news cast is seemingly done in front of green screen with multitudes of graphics. All style and no substance there.

Hell...even this morning I was a bit dismayed at what was being considered "news"! Sarah Palin's daughter broke up with her boyfriend, and it was a top story! This story belongs on the half hour celebrity gossip programs, not in my news. Last week was another good top story about Melinda Gates wanting an iPhone. Please...someone tell me why this is news?!?!?!?

Here's a taste of what channel 7 offers us everyday...and keep in mind, all the female anchors look like this woman!

Thanks to the change to daylight savings time this past weekend, I've been driving to work in pitch dark all week long. Monday we had a nice little snow storm which made things extra dark outside, yesterday morning wasn't as bad since the sun was just starting to peek out on it's long trek across the sky. This morning though, I think you would have been extremely surprised to see that it was morning!

We're in the middle of a nice little rain storm right now, and it's still pretty dark outside. So daylight savings time has yet to get us any real daylight since we changed the clocks on Sunday. I dunno...I'm not a fan of waking up and still having it be dark outside at six in the morning...But what does it matter really?

At least it's Wednesday, and when I get out of work I'll have only 2 days left to my week.

Anyways...guess I should get back to work...
