FC Twin(beware that there are 2 models of this clone, one with Yobo branding and one without. In this case, I'm talking about the Yobo-branded model):-Built well, but the controllers are unreliable(had one broken out of the box and my second one crapped out because one of the pins inside the plug got pushed back to the point where it wouldn't make contact with the controller port pins anymore)
-Will not play Castlevania III, but will play Rad Racer II and similar games with major graphical scrambling
-Uses updated NOAC with good sound reproduction(but messes up sampled music/speech)
-Super NES side is flawless(except for SA-1 games not working due to a missing lockout chip - this can be fixed by soldering a lockout chip off a bad Super NES game)
-Will not work with NES Light Gun games unless you buy the FC Twin Light Gun
The older FC Twin with no branding uses the older NOAC and has a problem where the Super NES side has blurry video output, on top of discoloring certain graphics.
You forgot to mention the issue with button presses when using real SNES controllers and both players hit the same button at the same time... I think that was the Y button wasn't it? Didn't it like register as the start button if that happened? It wasn't just yours, it happened on mine as well. That ruined the system for me.
I would test it, but I gave mine away and bought an NES. My Sister gave me a SNES so now I have no use for a SNES/NES clone any longer fortunately.
Also I don't think you've quite described just how awful the Retro Duo's "sound" is. In fact, half the time there is no music, just a bunch of static!

I think the GenCore may be compatible with Genesis controllers (unlike the GN Twin/GEN-X/FC3). I'll have to check to make sure.Oh boy it'd better! If so, I'll definitely purchase one!
-
Those prices are about the norm for "Retro Stores" nowadays...
At my local Game Swap, Genesis 1's are $69.99, Model 2's are $79.99, and Genesis 3's are $89.99.
They also charge $50 for a refurbished NES with a replaced pin connector, and $60 for a SNES. They have a rack for "cheap"
NES games that are between $1-$5 and then they have the more expensive games like Super Mario 3($20) and Contra($25) behind glass.

That looks beautiful man, though the buttons may be a bit awkward at that angle.I'll certainly be picking one up, that's AWESOME!!
While I don't think I will pick up the GenMobile, I do think it looks nice, as does the GenCore.

I was playing Street Fighter 2 for the genesis, and I accidentally tapped the system. This is what came up:*snip*
Anyone know how to unlock that with out hitting the system?

Isn't that kinda similar to the thing that happens when you "Crooked Cartridge" Zelda - Ocarina of Time?
Looks cool, to say the least.

-
Although I am more concerned with function over how it looks.Same here.
As long as the sound is good and it doesn't have graphical issues with Street Fighter, and uses Genesis controllers, I will be a happy camper!
Official Genesis' are really getting expensive; at my local GameSwap, Genesis 1's are $69.99 model 2's are $79.99 and model 3's are $89.99. Talk about gouging!
There is no excuse to not use official Genesis controllers with this thing.

Lately I've been watching Youtube reviews of "Action 52". I know it's an awful game, but why must internet video game reviewers act like they have Tourettes Syndrome by dropping f bombs every other word? It's not that funny. In fact it gets old fast. THE AVGN is a bad influence.I agree. It makes it hard to watch most "reviews" (read: Hate Mongering" on many intarwebz. They try to be just like the AVGN, but they fall flat on their faces, and simply show to the world they unoriginality.

It's a bad game. Castlevania 2 and castlevania adventure are the only two games in the series that are worse than this one. No matter how rare or "valuable" it is doean't change the fact that it sucks....You are talking about the SNES one... right?

I remember reading about someone modding a DS Phat to play gb/gbc games but I think he lost compatibility with gba games.... I'll have to look around, he gave a step by step on how to do itThat was proven to be fake. Many people on the Pocketheaven forums (who are into this kinda thing) have discussed this a long time ago. It is also obvious because the screenshot of Pokemon he uses has a yellow palette, which is not one of the default GBC palettes, but is the default palette of Goomba, a GB emulator for the GBA (there is a "yellow" palette on the GBC, but it looks nothing like the Goomba one... and the sprites are blue on the GBC "yellow" setting which they aren't on that screenshot.)
...Unless someone else made a different mod than the one I'm thinking of...

Like I said, way back when, i bought a thing, looked like a Gameshark, that allowed you to play DMG/Color games on the DS, now I can't find one icon_sad.gif eh. oh well.Hmm... I think I know what you are talking about... Was it called a Gameboy Bridge?
The Gameboy Bridge is a device that allows you to use a GBA flash cart on a GB/GBC IIRC.
Quick Google search yielded "GB Bridge will let you play Gamboy Color roms on Gameboy Advance with GBA Flash Advance Card."
Ah, I knew it was something to that effect (thats why I put the 'IIRC')

Yup, just wanted to create some back up!

Also: d-pad > stick. Always.QFT!
I could never pull off even the simplest of moves on the arcade version of Street Fighter II, and on the SNES I almost never miss a beat!

As the DS was released first in Japan, they may have a LOT of GBC compatible systems overthere, early importers, and a few lucky early buyers may have gotten them. Anyhow..Uh... The DS was released in America first...

As for replaceing the cart, I doubt there's a huge difference between the Color compat Phat DS, and the Non color compat Phat, probably as simple as the switch being left out. If that's the case, it would probably be quiet easy to add a switch to make it boot in GBC mode.I was a very early adopter, and mine didn't support GBC games like all of the rest... Why do you think Nintendo would release a few early ones with GBC support? Where are you getting all of this from? Or am I misunderstanding you?

In fact, it has ALOT of bad games. Just think. Genesis is FAR better. So? The Genesis has quite a few stinkers as well, but that doesn't make them bad systems in the least. Just don't play the crappy games and you'll be fine.
Exactly my point! Crap games don't make the classics any worse. Every system has them, and anyone stating otherwise is delusional or they are lying.

The NES emulation is really good (the sound is perfect).I've heard that from many people, but I have also experienced, and heard from just as many people that the sound is just unbearable; it literally sounds like static the whole time. What I gather from this is that the defect rate is really high with the Retro Duo. I've even heard of some units having worse processors, making SNES games run as slow as molasses.
I gave mine away to a friend as a SNES replacement, but I wouldn't buy another, as $50 is too much to take a gamble. I would recommend the FC Twin over it (the one with the YOBO jewel) but it has one issue that can break the deal if you often times play multiplayer; you can't use 2 official SNES controllers at a time; if you press certain buttons at the same time, it will pause the game.
There's also a standalone NES clone called the Retro Entertainment System. That one has seemingly perfect sound and colors, but it also has issues. On games with heavy DPCM usage, the sound hits the wrong notes quite frequently, enough to ruin the experience as it can play a high pitch suddenly and could break your concentration (Metroid is just unbearable on it.)
After I went through all of these experiences (and money!) I decided it was time to break down and hunt out some official hardware. I haven't had a good experience with a clone yet!

Everyone has his own opinion, which is totally fine - the NES isn't great in every way by any means. But, people keep saying stuff about the lack of arcade ports, all platformers, etc. Totally false. The NES has an enormous number of arcade ports. Contra, Arkanoid, Bubble Bobble, Bump 'n' Jump, City Connection, Spy Hunter, Vindicators, Xenophobe, Legendary Wings, Gradius, Ikari Warriors, etc. etc.
I'd stack it up this way:
+huge game library
+hi-res graphics (vs. Atari low-res graphics)
+smooth scrolling (vs. CV blocky scrolling)
+nice sound
+4-button controllers that were built like tanks
-uncomfortable controllers
-lots and lots of flicker
-limited color palette
-smallish sprites. The commenter that pointed out that most NES sprites were the same size was right.
As for good games/bad games/mediocre games...well. IMO, every system has something like 10% awesome games, 20% horrific games, and 70% middle-of-the-road games. The NES is no different, though with an overall library of ~700 games, that's a lot of very good games.
Agreed. I am glad someone else finally agrees that the NES wasn't the only system with a bunch of crappy games. I mean, look at Pacman and E.T on the 2600!
The tone some people are using makes it seem as though they think that the NES was the only system with some crappy 3rd party games. There were some games on the NES with large sprites, like Astyanax, but they tended to suffer from the screen being cramped, so I think the smaller sprites are actually a good thing, as you get more breathing room.

I have a feeling that most of the NES haters here grew up/live in Europe or Australia.Yep, even the game markets were backwards in those countries compared to North America.
Not haters, but the NES was just irrelevant in Europe.
Also, the NES was just a backward, no quality system when compared to fdd gaming on C64 or Amiga, computer gaming offered more scope, deeper, bigger, BETTER games. So I'll say the USA was the 'backward' country (Even the US gaming magazine CGW at the time stated NES offers inferior gaming').
I guess ol' J-pan was backwards too yess?
Really though, the reason the NES did so well and was loved by millions was because they were "deeper, bigger, BETTER games", but also more importantly it was because they were fun. Honestly, I've played some C64 and Amiga games through emulation as of the past few years, and I just don't see it. The ones that I've played (and I have played quite a few) were much simpler than games like Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Kirby's Adventure and the Megaman Games. I'd love to see a C64 try to pull of Ninja Gaiden!
It didn't succeed on sheer power, it succeeded because of the titles it was producing. The NES screamed with quality here in the US and over in J-pan. But I have heard that NOE just never tried, so I can't speak for the quality in Europe, which may very well have been sub-par.
You're kidding right? Excellent games on C64 and/or Amiga? Gosh, too numerous to mention. Excellent games on NES during 80s/early 90s in Europe? Maybe 5. Total sales of NES hardware in Europe by 1992 (source from the book Game Over). 1.5 million. See why the NES was totally irrelevant?fdd = floppy disk drive, as I said, in Europe cartridges was 'backwards', Europe didn't wanna go back to limited cartridge games, no way.
Key words "in Europe."

I have a feeling that most of the NES haters here grew up/live in Europe or Australia.Yeah, I think so as well, because on most forums I go to, that tends to be the case. At least for Europe I heard that it was mostly due to NOE just not caring and that they never even really put forth any effort towards marketing. Dunno about Australia.
It just seems so awkward to me that in Europe everyone knows about Sonic, but nobody hardly knows about Mario... Even my Dad knows about Mario! But hey, to them Mario being so popular seems the same way I suppose. I also cannot grasp the true nature of the thought process of how the Master System is superior to the NES just because it has less Shovelware... It's like saying "It has less good games, but also less bad games as well" when you don't even need to buy "Sesame Street's Spelling Adventure".
There may be more Shovelware, but that doesn't take away the classics however, and the NES definitely delivers on that front, at least in my playbook. The Sega Genesis however was much better, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles is still one of the greatest games of all time.
Genesis was leagues ahead of the Master System and I feel it was great competition for Nintendo.

I feel like I stepped into some bizarro world.Goodbye!
Man, you said it.
Hello!
Yes is no and no is yes. It makes perfect sense in Moonside!
But seriously, whats up with all the NES hate that's been going around recently? Or am I just a n00b lolz and this place has always had some hostility towards the NES?
Unfortunately, within the last 6 years NES has become a massive fad;
so now people no longer respect gamers of the NES...
saying quote "We are just following the crowd"
But thats simply not true,
I have been playing a NES since I was 5 years old.
I didnt simply begin playing it because of the fad, I have practically always played a NES.
I agree, heck I've been playing the NES since I was just 3! I no longer have one though I have been using an FC Twin, but I aim to purchase another real one soon. So much nostalgia, and overall good games that just hold up well against the test of time!

I have an FC3 and the sound is good and the game compatability is also good, but you still get the faint vertical/diagonal video lines. I prefer the original hardware.I hate those faint lines!!! Why do they exist!?!?!?!!?
They're there on the original hardware as well (at least for the NES). You normally can't see them, but on some T.V's they become very apparent, these clones just make them worse for whatever reason (the Retro Duo did it the worst).
Are these the same lines that the top loader puts out? Because they are totally not there on the toaster NES...
Well, I saw them on my sister's Toaster NES, but that is the only time I've seen them. They must be incredibly faint and almost undetectable, except on some T.Vs like my sister's. Or it's just her T.V screwing with the video signal.

In Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival on the Game Boy Advance, it is impossible to face off against Akuma in the U.S release. The game glitches out when you do so and permanently corrupts the game's high scores and various other things.
This makes it impossible to complete the game 100% and you must lose a match to finish the game.

The sound was fine on the system, as I tested one at the local Play'n'Trade. There were some rather serious graphical issues with Rad Racer II (the store actually had a copy), and tested my copy of Castlevania III. CV3 would not display the opening screen, the whip upgrade icon for the title and Trevor's sprite were garbled, and it went to a black screen after the "prayer" screen. The RetroDuo did (save for its "stereo" audio for the NES side), but I wonder when the NES controller adapters will be released (and will it work for the 4-score?).Was there a second revision of the RES made?
So, no notes were missing in games with frequent DPCM channel usage? Such as Super Mario 3 and Castlevania?
Speaking of second revisions... Retrobit made this as well didn't they? They made a Retro Duo "v2.0"(the one I had) and it's sound was terrible! Most games sounded like, quite literally, static most of the time! Some games like Bases loaded were so screwed up, that you couldn't hear anything except the bass line!
They very well could have made a new revision and screwed up the sound hardware with this system as well.

I don't think I have the patience to beat Super Mario World (SNES) anymore

Looks like someone doesn't know of the Top Secret Area...
Maybe you should check out the GBA version, as you can save anytime and it saves your lives/status/etc.
