PAL Antic in NTSC 800xl = black amd white picture
Syfo-Dyas replied to thgill's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Why is it that I'm still holding on to a 1084S in 2011?! You'd think they'd have affordable, flexible, and durable monitors as such widely available now a days, but it seems that there is still not a cheap market for such things. Sighh... Oh wait, either my 5" or 7" LCD flat screen handles PAL in color as well. Those didn't cost me much at all either. -
I'm in the market to pick up a projector to play my classic game systems on. I am looking for something that has both RBG and VGA input and something that will not burn out after a couple months of use. Any suggestions?

PAL Antic in NTSC 800xl = black amd white picture

I've had strange experiences as well. I.E. My flat screen TV will display my NTSC Atari's just fine, but if I plug a NTSC Amiga into it, it will not display a thing. Likewise, for the longest time I could not get my PAL Amiga to display in color on my 1084s using S-Video, yet my Nir Dary'ed Atari booted up in color just fine. Then one day I powered on my PAL Amiga and it just began displaying in color on the 1084s, yet I didn't do a thing, it just started to display correctly. All I could say was that strange things were most certainly afoot at the Circle K on that day. -

What I don't understand is the fact that he is using a Commodore 1701 monitor, where as I'm using a Commodore 1084s, which displays in color just fine. Though I did have a thought. On the 1084s there is a button in the back that enables and disables color. Perhaps your monitor has the same button? If so, trying playing with that as well. -
As usual, I'll take two of what ever you make.

Damn, Sloopy, sounds like your getting plenty experience with all this! I can't wait to check out that VBXE!

No it shouldnt cause a problem. The ATARI 130xe and AMIGA600 have nothing in common, design-wise.. Niether do they even use the same type of native video output.. Idivision ECS plugs into the denise socket. Its taking its output directly from the denise chip.. so obviously, it wouldnt matter in the least.. I will say one thing.. based on what Ive seen you do to simple thru-hole atari boards, if you touch that A600 with a soldering iron, it will probably never work again.. I send happy thoughts your way Metal.

I was just informed about this board on Amiga.org http://koti.mbnet.fi/malinto/dualsid/info.shtml Also I did want to say that Mirage shipped the SID's as promised! Thankx again man!

Sloopy: You know it is not nice to use one of my all time favorite movies to diss me! That's just messed up man! Metal: I got the 600 issue covered, though I do have a question for you: You know how if you remove the RF Out port from an Atari, it pretty much prevents it from working? Well I heard you can remove the one from the 600 without issues, thus making way for the Indivision VGA port. Do you know if there is any truth to this? FastRobPlus: This just happens to be the first dead Amiga I've ever had to deal with, and I've had a lot of them in my time. I've even done a little solder work on some of them in the past and they still kept on working. Ironically, the 1200 I have has been to Germany, London, Chile, and now the country previously known as America. On top of that it even survived the big earth quake Chile had a few years back and has had a few hardware modifications to resolve a few bugs that particular model had. Hows that for endurance?

Don't worry, no Cheese Sandwiches or Atari's were harmed during this procedure. And for the note, my Amiga 600 just died, and that tore a hole in my heart, just as it did when I destroyed my 130XE, which btw is the only Atari I have killed thus far. Granted my soldering on the 600 I sent to Sloopy wasn't the best, but it still powers up at least. Anyhow, my point. I do take Atari and Amiga hardware very seriously, both are a VERY old love of mine. And I respect you for taking your time to bail me out of my last situation, and for giving me tips and advice. I know how it feels to be really good or knowledgeable about something and to see someone come along who has no idea what they are doing. I also know the feeling of seeing rare hardware trashed and lost forever. Hell I work in a nursing home so I know what it is like to make friends time and time again only to have to eventually watch them die and have to later clean up their corpse and ship them out to the funeral home. So to deal with life and all its irony, I apply humour, for better or worse.

How do you know I've not been in practice before this project? I took to your advice, so hopefully I won't have to rely upon you to save my ass again, but thank you for doing so the last time.

Metal: Yes yes, I know you shared that bit of information with me already in a private post, but I'm telling you. The Atari is FINE! If I put the original Pokey back on then everything works as it should, but if I replace the original with either of these, then it will not fully boot, so it has got to be a dead Pokey. I can't think of any other explanation. Anyhow, as you said,"practice makes perfect". Eventually I'll get there, and considering that the beast ain't dead yet, I'm still good on this one.

What the heck is a turphid capacitor anyhow?!
-
OH no! I hope I didn't fry my Flux Capacitor and Shield Generator as well. Do you think they'll be O.K.?
-
24 should be good. Real thin Cheese strands. Though Metal or Sloopy may advice something else, they are better at this Cheese business than I.
-
FastRobPlus: Simple. A4 connects to pin 13 of your CPU. Then you have your ground and left and right audio connectors right below the A4. Run them to our RCA or Guitar Jack female and that should be that. At least the last time I did it that's all it took. This time, it appears that I have problematic Pokey chips. Sloopy: The Ham Sandwich did have a thin slice of Colby Cheese on it, though I've heard that Atari's are pretty resistant to Colby as opposed to other cheeses such as Limburger cheese.
-
Because I used a Ham Sandwich.
-
Again, the Atari ain't dead... yet. It still works with the original Pokey. Seriously though, do you think the other two Pokey's are dead?
-
Ohh, do you think my bad spelling might have some relation to my pokey problems?
-
I noticed that the lettering on the one I received from Lotharka was inverted, but I didn't flip it as I figured that would be a bad move.
-
He he he. The Atari ain't dead yet. It's those damn chips!
-
So I ordered another Simple Stereo Upgrade off of Lotharka along with an extra Pokey. Ironically, he had already put the Pokey on the board, and failed to get all the legs in the holes, thus one of them was bent. Needless to say I removed it and corrected it. Anyhow. I installed the board (yes I've done one of these before and didn't fry my mobo this time), but when I turned on the system, the Power led faded in and out, and the system booted, but with no sound. My first thought was that I screwed up, but to make sure I removed the board and replaced it with my old Pokey. Everything booted up fine. I then removed my Pokey and replaced it with a Ham Sandwich. As expected, no results. After this I tried Lotharka's Pokey, and the Power Led again Flashed, and the system locked. It would no longer boot to the cursor. I have a dead 600XL I picked up for $9.00 a while back, so I removed the Pokey fro it and put it into my 800XL, but it did the same thing as Lotharka's Pokey. So what I am wondering is if the Pokey and or Ham Sandwich needs to be the same exact revision number as the Pokey that originally came with my 600XL, or if they are probably just dead? Pokey's in the pic are the one's my 800XL does not like.

BTW, Super Mario has been ported to the Sega Genesis. Just google it, you'll find plenty of videos and the rom.
