  1. What is the best process for dumping ROMs from cartridge?

Is there an easy way to do this? I have a couple of games that I would like to include on my AtariMax cart and I would like backup copies for personal use only.

  2. UP FOR SALE IS MY NEW DVD IN MY NUTS AND BOLTS TO VIDEOGAME COLLECTING SERIES. This is a DVD that covers all US Sega systems, as well as gives a great overview of games and accessories for each US sega system. The DVD is filmed in HD(1080i) and is put on two discs(2 hrs, 20 min). I am selling this DVD for $20 shipped worldwide.

The current deal is that two of my DVDs are $26 shipped. All three are $36 shipped worldwide. I would like to thank all who have supported this DVD project.

My other two DVD videos are also on sale. Vol. 1 covers oddball systems 70s to mid 80s. Vol. 2 is Nintendo US home systems.

PM me if you are interested! Thank you, John

And by the way, that is one helluva collection! Kudos. Have you been featured in Retro Gamer yet? :?:

  3. Absolutely love this game! Got to be one of my favorite games for the CV! I remember when it first came out and was floored by the voice!

I'm surprised there were not more games that attempted voice... The Odyssey 2 had to have a whole separate module to even have the capability. Pretty cool that the CV was able to do it natively.

  4. I'd really like to play Centipede and Slither with a mouse like I do with MAME emulator. I like Daniel's hacks to at least play with the keyboard but playing with the mouse would be ideal for me. Any chance Daniel?

You can play any Roller Controller or Driving Module game (ie: Slither and Turbo) through the ADAMem Emulator with a mouse or keyboard already. You just have to use the right parameter when loading the emulator and rom image. To make life easier, use the ADAMem Manager Frontend or even better use Virtual ADAM by Steve Pitman and just check the options box for how you want the specific controller emulated. Also remember to use the original cart rom image and not Daniel's controller hacked cart rom image.

    Hi Jim,

Well, I can get Slither to work with a mouse with Virtual ADAM but I still can't get Centipede to work with a mouse with anything. Best I could do is with a joystick in Virtual ADAM. The mouse fire button will work but the gun won't move.

That's because Centipede was not designed to work with the Roller Controller (like Slither, Victory, etc.), it is for use with the hand controllers or other joysticks. On the real CV with a Roller Controller, you can however flip the switch on the Roller Controller from "Roller" to "Joystick" in order to use the trakball to play Centipede as well as other games (some just don't work well though as they are designed for joystick play).

No emulator for the CV or ADAM takes this switch setting on the Roller Controller into account so the only way to play Centipede the way you want is on a real CV or ADAM with a Roller Controller and the switch set to "Joystick".

Space Fury rules with the Roller Controller.

  5. Sorry guys - didn't mean for that to sound like something was wrong... It's just with the buying / selling / moving thing is taking all of my time, and I'm also having issues at work. :( Hopefully once I get down to Florida I'll have more time.

Thank you for the good wishes anyway!

    Bob

Phew! And, bon voyage, good luck and see you soon!

  6. Exactly Dr Manhatten, playing a 2600 game with a cx 40 is a better experience then playing a 2600 game with a pc joypad

After all you would'nt want to play a nes game with an atari cx 40 (and have additional buttons giving you the same button set as a nes contoller)

I think we all agree on those points! Though, I'd probably hack a CX40 to make it work with this if need be. It's got lots of potential. Just like the Flashback 2 had lots of potential. I had a FB2 for about a year and sold it because really... whats the point if you can't expand or plug in an original cartridge? If they made an FB2 with an expansion USB/SD port or some other awesome thing like that I'd buy it all over again in a heartbeat!

Ah, but you can add a cartridge port to a FB2. Then, if you really want SD card support on it, just plug in a Harmony Cartridge.

I could add one... but it would look like crap. ;)

Why doesn't anyone just make a machine for mass production? Look at all of the Sega and NES clones out there...

  7. Well said, Master Fred!

There are even a few I enjoy on the Sega CD! If not for the comedic aspects alone... But there were also GOOD games too. On the CD-i I rather enjoy Voyeur to this day.

The other aspect here is that early FMV paved the way. It was cutting edge... And it could be argued that many cinematics today wouldn't be what they are if people didn't push the envelope with the available tech at the time.

  9. 1) Buy old comic book for 10 cents.

    2) Cut out video game ads and "trim" them.

    3) Put on internet for $7.99.

    4) Wait for sucker to buy.

    5) Profit.

    6) Repeat as needed.

Come to think of it, now I'm kind of pissed someone is wrecking perfectly good comics out there. :x

  10. I used to love those old comic book ads. I recently saw one for 2600 Empire strikes back, cool!

I have a bunch too. The great thing about the Joust ad here is the opening line...

"Long ago, in the distant future..."

It is currently my facebook profile quotation. FYI: That ad frequented comic books in the early to mid 80s with 1984 being the sweet spot for finding the ad

  11. Thanks for the link.

I didn't realize that Target has been around that long.

Target has been around since 1962. I was born and raised in Minneapolis (The first Target was in Roseville, MN) so to me there has never been a time they didn't exist! ;) One of my first paying jobs was working for Target.

  12. A lot of people don't like 7800 Galaga but what is really wrong with it. Can we list it's problems so that if somebody wants to hack it or reprogram it, they know what to change? The more detail the better.

    Allan

The 7800 version is a plain insult to everybody. I have tried to keep in mind that the

game was a release title, and it was rushed in 1984, but there are many things that are

unforgivable. Other things may be limits of the 7800 hardware. It had a cool graphics chip,

but it's a shame the processor and tia couldn't keep up with it. I know sprites are detached

from the background, but the 7800 has a problem with them not blending right. They look

like they are truly on a layer of cellophane on the screen. That could be the choppy animation

(same as the version of Mario Bros and DK that come to mind)

    1. Lower Resolution, blurry, washed-out-color graphics

    2. Choppy animation -- Sure, the NES is choppy in a "character graphics kind of way", but the 7800 version seems to move in a stair-step pattern (probable due to the lower res.)

I checked it out, and this might be due to the WIDE screen ratio. Maybe squeeze it like the NES version?

    3. The game is just WAY too easy on the low levels, and the choppiness is even worse on the higher levels. (The alien patterns are no smooth. They look forced.)

    4. Slow. They ruined the fast-paced excitement of the arcade.

    5. The opening music is terrible! Understandable on the tia, but even worse than I'd like to hear. (Except bonus round music)

    6. The star field is single color and does not have the simulated parallax scrolling like the NES and arcade (AND THE stars in the 8-BIT version of Galaxian, for that matter, looks 10x better due to the multiple colors!).

    7. The stars are all one color. They look like blue periods scrolling down the screen!

Maybe, at least, speed them up to create more excitement?

    8. Levels are displayed in NUMBER format at the bottom right. No flags and shields.

    9. Big yellow shots. Alien shots look like am dumb line with a growth at the bottom.

    10. The ship looks dumb.

    11. Alien Patterns are wrong The blue aliens do not dip below the player's ship.

    12. The tractor beam could be curved instead of lines.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I was SO disappointed when I saw it in 1986.

Tell us how you really feel. ;) I agree with a lot of your points here. I wish I had more knowledge when it comes to 2600 and/or 7800 programming. I'd take it upon myself to create a Galaga Trilogy cart. Re-do Galaga, add Gaplus and Galaxian.

  13. Given the excellence of 2600 Medieval Mayhem maybe he'll MAKE some homebrews and hacks someday. :)

Thanks :) possibly next year, doubtful on hacks though.

Yeah, so um... Medieval Mayhem is a huge favorite amongst my Retro Gaming Friends and Myself. It is still one of the best 2600 Homebrews I've ever encountered. FYI--A polaroid photo I snapped of us 30-something-men playing Medieval Mayhem also won me a copy of "King of Kong" on DVD a couple years back.

    Damn fine game. myico.png

  14. Would love to see some pics of this amazing Man-Cave!!! And yes, Squish'Em Sam is a pretty fun and dare I say overlooked game. I never did give it the time it deserves as well as Sewer Sam.

Ok, dudes. :) As soon as I get my Canon camera back from repair, I'll shoot a couple and post them with a reply in the forum. The ManCave really extends the length of my basement. I also own a Tron cocktail machine, a coin-op dart board and modern consoles as well. I'll do my best to cover my collection.

Ain't it a shame that all those Atari systems are boxed up in the closet! :)

The Atari stuff is all within reach with the 7800 being the most used of the bunch. I'm particularly fond of the Super Pac-Man (7800) and Juno First right now. I've got everything organized in tubs.

  15. I have been playing the hell out of my ColecoVision lately. I find myself sneaking down to my man cave for a quick game whenever I can! To set the scene, my "office" is wall to wall video game stuff. On one side, I've got my original Apple IIc and a Vectrex with my modren computorz snuggled up next to them on the adjacent wall. On the opposite wall, I've got 3 cabaret arcade games (Monaco GP, Ms. Pac-Man and a 48-in-1 Solar Fox Cabinet. Squished between them, I've got a 21" stereo TV on a stand with 4 consoles: SNES, Sega Sports Edition DreamCast (black), N64 and my ColecoVision. In the corner I've got a homemade TV Stand shaped like a arcade game that holds a 13" TV and an additional 4 consoles: NES, 'Cube, JVC X'Eye and SMS. All consoles are connected to auto-sensing video switches for ease of use with the exception of the ColecoVision which gets special treatment with a direct hookup via RG-6/Coaxial Connector. My 7800, 5200, 2600, Sears Consoles, Saturn and other consoles are boxed and in my closet with all of my games. Also in my closet is an addional NES and Vic20 hooked up to a Commodore 1702. In short, there is no shortage of video game madness in my office. [/bragging]

Yet, the ColecoVision is getting all the love lately. I blame the Ultimate SD cartridge and the recent work Yurkie has done for me on my controllers. It's simply a BLAST to play this thing all of the time.

And now why I really posted. ;) Of particular interest lately is a cartridge I picked up from the Marketplace last week... Squish'em Sam. I had never even heard of this game until I bought the lot last week. And for the last couple of days it's been quite addicting. Am I the only one that thinks this game is totally rad? Other opinions? Is it rare or anything? Anyway, I love it.

  16. My 7800 arrived today! Got it off ebay w/a bunch of carts for $50 (+$15 S&H). 7800 only carts at that. A numer of duplicate, but 19 unique 7800 games in all.

Congratz! You'll love having it with all that's going on here for the 7800. Now go buy some homebrews from the store! :)

  17. one controller port?

Meh. Few games require both, and I hardly ever have anyone to play with anyway.

And it would be a great portable kit to take with you on the road when the real deal isn't convenient to lug along with you.
