  1. Wait... I thought... They were already... Called Atari?

Yes I thought the same... A lot of stuff has been released under the name of "Atari", even re-released what had been released under another name before, you see ads everywhere... I can't even believe that happened 2008, from my recollection it's been a longer time.

EDIT: Ooookay, Wikipedia explains it in detail:

In October 2001 Infogrames announced that it was "reinventing" the Atari brand with the launch of three new games. On May 7, 2003, Infogrames had its majority-owned, but discrete US subsidiary Infogrames NA officially renamed Atari, Inc., renamed its European operations to Atari Europe but kept the original name of the main company Infogrames Entertainment. The original Atari holdings division purchased from Hasbro, Atari Interactive, was also made a separate corporate entity.

In November 2006, Atari Melbourne House Pty Ltd. had acquired Melbourne House from Atari and that the studio would be renamed to Krome Studios Melbourne.

In November 13, 2007, The US division announces to exit the game development business to concentrate solely on publishing and distribution.

On March 6, 2008, Infogrames made an offer to Atari Inc. to buy out all remaining public shares for a value of $1.68 per share, or $11 million total. The offer would make Infogrames sole owner of Atari Inc., thus making it a privately held company.[20] On April 30, 2008, Atari Inc. announced its intentions to accept Infogrames' buyout offer and to merge with Infogrames.[21] On October 11, 2008, Infogrames completed its acquisition of Atari Inc., making it a wholly owned subsidiary.

  2. I don't have original manuals for any of my games, yet I like to have something to read the rules and get in the mood for playing, but not on the computer, but having it in my hands... ;)

So I downloaded manual scans for the games, printed them, even put staples in them so I can turn the pages like a real manual. Of course it's still obvious that it's not the original manual, for one thing I only print them in black and white to save ink, the paper format doesn't match and so on... but that's okay, I don't want to have 100% replicas of the manuals.

Okay, now after I've given you a little introduction let me tell you about the topic, as I've encountered a problem.

The manuals for Sky Jinks and Kangaroo that you find here on AtariAge appear to be missing pages: If you count all pages (on Kangaroo you've to count one page twice, because it's actually two pages in one scan) they both total to 6 - which is not a multiple of 4.

Are there missing pages? If not, where are the blank pages positioned in the manuals?

  3. Tonight I had a dream about an Arcade game... A group of people gathered around it to see this, it was said it's a new game. I don't really remember how it was played, however on the screen it had a farm, some cows etc. in comic style graphics. A girl was playing the game while the crowd was watching...

Suddenly a window/textbox of some sort popped up, and in the upper left corner it had a picture of the girl playing the game! Everyone was like "Ooooh!" and "Wow!" as it turned out, the Arcade had a camera which automatically took a picture of the player to use it in the game.

I would have liked to play the game as well, but I had more important matters to attend to, it was one of those dreams again where I am some kind of refugee, among a group of refugees...

I just thought I'd share this experience, maybe some other people dreamt up new Arcades as well?

  4. The cart's been dumped before. Here it is:

    Attached File 32_in_1.zip ( 59.26K )

    [...]

I believe it switches games each time it's powered on. Is that correct Herbarius?

Yes, that's correct. However, in Stella you can't do this (or can you?), that's why I asked how you got it emulated.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't download the file and check what it is. It's a seperate BIN for every game. What I knew was a single .bin file which would only give you Fun with Numbers, nothing else.

  5. Is there any documentation on how the cart should work (ie, how do you select the multiple games)?

Yes, normally you would switch the Atari off and on again, and it will be a different game.

There is some kind of "register" in the cartridge that gets incremented each time you power it up, so this is possible. Somewhere I found a description written by someone who replaced this "register" with DIP switches, so he could select the games with them.

  6. Thanks for you quick reply. Now I know they propably just have been lazy converting the games... maybe it was kind of a rush job ;)

May I asked how you managed to get it emulated? Have you made modifications to the ROM file or sliced it into the seperate games somehow?

Sorry your cart is so sensitive to the touch.

Any suggestions on how I could improve that?

  7. that is ofcourse assuming or guessing that the authorities can prove in a german court that 'beyond all reasonable doubt' it was the videogame that caused this crazy/saddo to carry out this massacre

As far as I remember, the "experts" (like psychologists) said something along the line "that's very unlikely".

In fact it is known, that he was depressive and had some social issues... Yes, he played Far Cry the evening before his "rampage", but I guess he played Far Cry on other evenings as well.

However, politicians, especially the conservative ones, want to have something to blame everything on, then they can ban it or restrict it in some way and get some good publicity (at least from some of their voters)... They don't care that problems are not solved by that.

It's similar to the other similar shootings we had in recent years (clearly derived from US example, no offense!)... Even if they had wrote an "goodbye letter" explaining their reasons, still there's those people that shout "All because of the killer games."

  8. Hello,

I just aquired the 32 in 1 Game Cartridge for the Atari 2600.

It works, but I have noticed the colors in most games are quite off... E.g. The Court in Activision Tennis is blue, not green.

Could this be the NTSC version (I'm from Germany, therefore normally it's PAL)? I thought this cartridge was only released in Europe, so why should there be a NTSC version at all?

Or maybe colors have been altered in some of the games like they altered graphics in some? I can't test it in Stella because it won't work (you can only play Fun with Numbers).

Or could something be wrong with the cart after all?

I also noticed the picture wasn't quite as clear as I'm used to from other games, maybe this has something to do with it/could help you determine what's with the colors. Also the cart, when in the VCS, seems to be veeery sensitive to touch, one little bump and it's Hello there, colored bars!

  9. your 'monkeys at a keyboard' theory? ;)

Mind you, if I'm not mistaken there would be 2^16384 different possible ROMs from which you "intelligent filter" would have to eliminate the "bad ROMs". That's a 4933-digit number.

  10. And most dealers here don't really have categories for Atari stuff. They have a category for the games, but they don't have a clue as to how to market or sell boxes and manuals.

What about putting the game together with its manual in the box? :?

  11. My honest opinion? It's not gonna happen.

It's because the recent school shooting in Winnenden, everytime something like that happens they (=a bunch of conservative politicians) blame it on "killer games", and every time they do it they lose more of their credability. This whole violence-debate has a few years ago even resulted in the acknowledgement of video games as "cultural asset" by the German ministry of arts and culture, so you see they're moving in the opposite direction they intended...

Also, the laws regarding violent computer games are already extremely strict in Germany, compared to other countries, so there's not really the need to tighten them any further. Also I think the constituiton wouldn't allow a "total ban".

  12. I never understood how that Angry Video Game Nerd could reach celebrity status and is signing autographs at gaming expos...I mean, he's just a gamer like you and me

I think it's something about the character. Like you said, for one thing you get the impression it's just a "gamer like you and me" who gets frustrated at annoying game elements that frustrated "the every gamer"... But he's not just that, he's not a realistic representation of "the average gamer", but he's a little over-the-top, almost like a caricature. People can identify with him and at the same time laugh at him, I think that adds a lot the mix.

Also note that saying the Angry Video Game Nerd doesn't sign autographs at gaming expos is like saying Captain Picard is signing autographs at Star Trek Conventions. Don't confuse the actor and his role. ;)

  13. I really like that website, just the fact the Video Game Critic reviewed almost every Atari 2600 game you'd come across normally... Also the reviews are informative and entertaining to read, despite their shortness...

However, I find his ratings a bit random at times. Some games get a straight F, while others get something like B or C, although you'd expect similar ratings for both. Sometimes games seem to get better ratings for nostalgia, despite him complaining about various issues, while on other games he seems to base an F rating on a single, seemingly minor complaint.

  14. Oh, just googled and found out you're propably talking about Red Faction: Guerrilla... I should have known since it's in the Xbox 360 board, but in fact I didn't realize that when I posted my above entry (got through to this thread via the "most recent post" in Modern Gaming from the main forum index).

I thought this was about the original Red Faction (2001). In fact I didn't even realize a new Red Faction game was going to come out, nor would I have imagined it, because from what I remember the original two didn't quite live up to the expectations. ;)

However, I hope that'll teach you not to ever again adress a sequel by the series' name and just assume everyone knows about which part you're talking! :D

To add something a little more constructive to this post:

I don't know the new game, however I've played the first one and was disappointed. For one thing as the promised "you can destroy everything" just was not true, as I said there were parts where you just couldn't get through. Basically the game was almost completely "on rails", which just doesn't fit to the "blow holes in the walls to find your way out" illusion it was trying to create. Also sometimes you'd have stuff like metal window frames floating in the air after you destroyed the wall which seriously hurt suspension of disbelief.

I think with the technical improvements we have seen in the last years they could easily correct that issue, like metal frames wouldn't float in midair because of gravity, also a more open world, so you wouldn't feel "on rails" despite the claim you could "destroy everything". In fact I think that's a promise they could not afford not to keep up as easily as 2001 - because gamers knew stuff like that wasn't "normally possible in games", but the bar was raised in that department.

So I'm looking forward to read some of your impressions of the new game to get a picture of whether they did a better job this time.

  15. If you mean commercially successful, you're obviously wrong. The Playstation sold more than both combined (propably several multiples).

Also, the Jaguar is really a 32-Bit system, everyone knows that.

That's how you define it, as there is no real definition of what makes a game console (as opposed to a computer) "32 bit"...

The Jaguar was a multi-processor-system, some of the processors were 64, others were 32 bit. If you're going to be strict, you'd say, that means it's 32 bit, because you'd say the 32 bit is a kind of bottleneck. However, because they wanted to sell the console, Atari said it was 64 bit, because it had 64-bit capabilities that could be used for some tasks.

You forget that the REAL 32-Bit systems were the early ones, like 3D0 and CD32. The Saturn and PSOne are sort of 32-2-Bit...

I would think it's the other way 'round. 3DO, CD32, Saturn are "early attempts" at a 32 bit console, but the Playstation got it right. There are propably several reasons, maybe the world wasn't yet ready for 32-bit Gaming... Note that the Playstation was released 1995, the same year Windows 95 came out and PC gaming made the jump from 16 to 32 bit. It was the beginning of the end

  16. It's quite a while back that I played this, I sure must have it somewhere, maybe I should start searching.

OK, seriously now, everything (except the ground itself) is destruct-able and I mean EVERYTHING.

Sorry, but not quite... Where the level designers didn't want you to take a shortcut, there are indestructable walls. Also there's such hilarious stuff as destroying a complete wall, but the metal window frame won't give way and therefore float in the air...

However, it's quite cool to be able to destroy a lot of stuff, propably with the new physics models etc. this will become popular and usual nowadays.

  17. Any other systems that have dust doors on them may or may not have a cart stuck in them

That's the problem, the 2600 does have a dust door, however it's different than what newer consoles have and some people suggested, it wouldn't suffice to keep all the dust out.

  18. does the 2600 run faster the hotter it gets? some person says pong get faster the longer its played due to console getting hotter...

Maybe that person was talking about dedicated Pong Machines, not the 2600.

Because that game doesn't have a CPU, it may appear more conceivable.
