Great videos! While I enjoy watching guys like AVGN bash old systems, I appreciate that you're planning to give more of a historical overview of the system. Just by looking at some of the "multimedia" titles available for the system it is easy to see why its developers certainly thought it was the way of the future. It seemed like an alternative to buying a CD-ROM-enabled home computer.

Fess up, who collects but then dosen't play?
animagnum replied to Mike 01Hawk's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I am also ashamed to admit that I do this. I collect games, clean them up, and then store them. I feel like I'm building some kind of escapist time capsule. -
May 09 RetroGamingRoundup.com Podcast - Available Now.

Great episode! I really enjoyed this month's top ten. -
It would be nice to see it released on DSi Ware, but I think they're going to have to enhance it a bit to do so. I could see Nintendo suggesting they have "alternate" versions of the included games with refreshed artwork so that the package would not seem like a bundle of VC-esque games.

It's a bummer, but it makes sense that Nintendo would want a clear distinction between Virtual Console releases and DSi/Wii Ware titles. I imagine they would have no problem with an Intellivision compilation provided that the games were not being emulated -- similar to the Game & Watch series on Game Boy or Adventure Island: The Beginning on Wii Ware.

I agree with some of the above posts that mentioned the simplicity of the games. I still enjoy modern games, but I find myself much more immersed when I am playing classic games. Another thing I like about classic games that has less to do with nostalgia is the fact that there are so many games available for reasonable prices. This is not a jab at current games, but I like being able to go to the store and come home with a stack of old games for less than half of what I'd spend on something new. Depending upon what you're into, classic gaming can be a thrifty hobby.

Super NES (first and second generation versions) NES FC Twin FC3 FC Mobile Super 8 (not really a console, but more like an awesome conversion cart) Super Game Boy / Super Game Boy 2 Sega Genesis (model 2) Sega CD Sega 32X Sega Dreamcast Nintendo 64 GameCube Game Boy Pocket Game Boy Color Game Boy Advance SP Nintendo DS Nintendo DS Lite Nintendo DSi PSP Nintendo Wii Xbox Xbox 360 PlayStation 2 PlayStation 3 I had a 3D0 and an Atari 2600, but I donated those to my school's video game library before moving. -
I accidentally had a retro party once when I was in college. It was my birthday, so I took my hard-earned monies to the grocery store and bought a lot of booze thinking that'd be enough for a party. I think I also bought some Triscuits or something like that. Veggie cream cheese spread to go with it, perhaps. Anyway, later that evening, people came over and we were having a pretty decent time hanging out. At one point I mentioned I had a Sega Dreamcast and a NesterDC disc with around 500-600 games. I also had a gigantic, ancient, Sony front-projection TV where we could play it. The thing looked like you could open it up to melt Nazis if you wanted. It was old. So yeah, an instant retro-gaming (albeit with the help of an emulator) broke out on my birthday. It was great. I am not much of a host, so I was glad the Dreamcast was there to be my wingman that evening. Now that I have a quality collection of real retro games, I could host a proper party at some point. In retrospect, I wished I'd have spent that money on some pizzas or soda. People had such a great time rediscovering some of their old favorites. rmaerz, that does sound like a kick ass retro gaming party. I think you have pretty good coverage in the video game department, so my only suggestion is to make sure you have plenty of salsa. I have found that those Scoopables chips tend to make the salsa well run dry much faster than intended.

Sonic for Game Gear was great. I also enjoyed Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse. It's a great platformer if you're into those. The first two Mortal Kombat games for GG were also pretty decent. They obviously aren't arcade-perfect, but I remember them being very playable adaptations.

Agreed, Retro Game Challenge is a fantastic game. I like reading the fake gaming magazines you get after completing some of the challenges. I'm also on the seventh game... it's kinda hard, but I only have one challenge left for it I think.

You are right, Tom-Lynx, you can play the games with the GBA as a controller using the Game Boy Player. It displays the Game Boy Player logo on the GBA's screen while you play.

Hori did make a SNES-style controller for the GameCube specifically for the Game Boy Player. I haven't seen any around recently, but I am sure some sites still sell them.

FC Mobile 2, now accepting preorders... Get 10% OFF!
animagnum replied to StoneAgeGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
That's true. However, I think it's close enough to play games like Mario and Mega Man without going insane. If you've used any of the SNES/NES clones, the controllers tend to use this layout for the X and B buttons, which are mapped to B and A respectively when playing NES games. -
FC Mobile 2, now accepting preorders... Get 10% OFF!
animagnum replied to StoneAgeGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I have one of the original FC Mobiles and I was not too pleased with the quality of the unit. On the other hand, I'm pretty optimistic about this new version. I like the design much better than the original and it appears they have swapped the B and A buttons to their correct positions! Cool! -
I found a knock-off Game Boy Color -> N64 converter at a gaming store about ten years ago. It was so terrible I ended up taking it back. It could only play games in greyscale even if they were dedicated, clear cart Game Boy Color games. It also could not save games that had a save feature. The PSX version was made by the same company, but I don't know if it was any better. A few years later I remember seeing something similar for the GameCube by another company. It used the memory card port to plug in a device that accepted GBA games. Kind of silly considering that Nintendo had the Game Boy Player out at the same time. Game Boy Advance through an SNES would be pretty cool though. I guess it would have to be the innards of a GBA using the video output of the SNES.

That's true, I was able to get an unopened copy of Shenmue last year for $20. I probably could have found it for less if I had done a little digging.

Giant Nintendo Coffee Table
animagnum replied to the.golden.ax's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Now they just need a giant NES Advantage kitchen table! -
Is it possible that DC game prices are going to go up a bit because of this? I'd imagine it wouldn't, but I have only been collecting old games and systems for a couple of years. Just curious.

The funny things people think...
animagnum replied to joekorali's topic in Classic Console Discussion
There is a store near my house that specializes in used video games. They have a great selection of stuff, but their disc-based games tend to be in horrid condition. I realize this isn't their fault, but I've inspected several games before purchasing and had to turn them down. They were cheap, but not worth the risk. Recently I was checking out an "in box" version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms VI for PS1. They had it for around $50 used. It was definitely used. Like, it might not even work. At the bottom of the rack they had games without cases/instructions and the prices were reduced. In this pile I found another copy of RoTK VI for $26 in a clear plastic jewel case. It was in great condition. I am not really sure about the value of that game, but it was really weird that the more playable copy (sans instructions and case) was almost half price. Is the case and manual really worth $24? -
Yup, definitely. Nuby made something called a cobra light, I think and it was great. It was a little unwieldy, but of the boxes of wormlights I went through, it was easily the best. It projected the LED light into a mirror that reflected back on the screen. Rather than an annoying dot of light on the screen, it was diffused and covered it uniformly. The Dragon Warrior games mentioned above are great. Although it is not a traditional RPG, the first Dragon Warrior Monsters game is a lot of fun. Final Fantasy Adventure is pretty decent if you enjoy Zelda-style games.

The device is called the Tristar Super 8. I have one for my SNES. It plays SNES, Super Famicom, NES, and Famicom games. It's kind of a clunky device, but it works. It doesn't 'convert' NES games so much as it hijacks the video output and controller inputs of the SNES. You have to plug it into the video out of the SNES to get it to work -- the same principle as attaching a 32X to a Genesis. The company made a similar device for the N64 that accepted NES, Famicom, SNES, Super Famicom and N64 games.
