ls650- I'd say try both before you decide, especially if you are interested in emulation. The whole "pocketable vs. portable" thing seems a little ridiculous to me since I usually have a backpack where I carry my laptop/tablet/portable gaming devices anyway, pocketable or no. Most adults with enough time to play a portable gaming device outside the house are usually traveling, and this is how I see most adults carry these devices, anyway. When I'm on an airplane, once the device is out of the backpack, I definitely appreciate the far superior controls (including analog stick) of the Shield.
As for future support, NVIDIA just released the "Shield 2" with the Tegra K1, so they can't be doing too badly. The Shield 2 is a tablet, and it's bigger than the 1st gen Shield. Next thing you know, BDW will be arguing that a tablet is not portable. LOL.

Yeah, I have to agree with BDW. That Shield thing has zero appeal to me, whereas at least a PSP/Vita is easy to carry around.
I think you also have to look at the long term support. Sony is going to be selling the Vita for a while, but the Shield..? How many of them have actually been sold?
-
...and your willful ignorance is not amusing. The NVIDIA Shield *is* a portable gaming device, as you well know. That's why it has a 10hr battery life (vs. 5-6 on the Vita). It may not be pocketable, but it is definitely portable. As for "low quality screen", scream about OLED all you want (and only on the prev gen Vita), but the Shield has the same size display as the Vita, but with 76% more pixels and 294ppi pixel density vs. 221ppi on the Vita.
Almost forgot: 2GB RAM on the Shield vs. 500MB on the Vita, microsd on the Shield vs. proprietary sony memory cards on the Vita, 16GB storage on-board on the Shield vs. 1GB on the Vita.
Yeah, sorry about that.
Especially when it comes to emulation, pocketable vs. portable is about all you have. So I don't blame you for harping on that.
...Except you're in the wrong topic. We're talking about portable devices. If I was just going to sit in my house and play emulators I would hook my PC up to my flatscreen, not play on a low quality 5" screen.
-
BDW- Oh, that's OK. I don't carry a gaming device in my pocket- just my phone, keys, and wallet...y'know, like normal people?
But I see you did not counter any of the technical claims:
MUCH more powerful SoC, much higher resolution screen, better speakers, better controls; particularly when it comes to emulation, Vita simply doesn't have the same horsepower as the Shield.
...and that's because they're true.
-
BDW- actually, you should accept a better substitute: the NVIDIA Shield. MUCH more powerful SoC, much higher resolution screen, better speakers, better controls, and rocks at emulation with Retroarch and other emulators. Particularly when it comes to emulation, Vita simply doesn't have the same horsepower as the Shield, and that's a fact you cannot dispute. With the Shield 2, this already-wide performance gap only gets bigger.
Accept no substitutes. This is literally as good as it gets. Classic games look fucking fantastic on the OLED screen.

Hi All,
So I've been out of the emulator scene (and Android) for a bit. But I just got an Android gaming device and thought I'd check if there is a Jaguar emulator for Android yet. My searches in google play and google turn up nothing, but ya never know...

abrondino- AWESOME work. I can see you're really thinking outside the box to make this a truly unique piece of Atari art. Great work so far. Eagerly awaiting your updates!
After quite a few tries, I am unable to cut the tops of the 2600 machines to where it looks smooth. I have decided to go the route of emulating the top of the 2600 by getting multiple square metal (preferably powder coated to match my new control panel) and affixing them to the top.

I would like to put in a good word for Mark- he provided soft-mod service w/ Coinops on 2 XBOXs for me, as well as excellent post-sale support! He will go the extra mile to help you out, even pointing to other services to save you time and $ if need be, and his prices are very reasonable. Great guy!

Just wanted to put in a good word for Mike- he's local and he just got my Trusty XBOXs working when I had almost lost hope of ever seeing Coinops working on them. Not only did he fix the problem (BIOS), but he also replaced one of the hard drives with a 2TB (with IDE to SATA adapter), AND patched the XBEs to work with the upgraded processor and memory. He has also been very responsive to any minor issues that have popped up with various games/emus. I will let him post details on the Trusty XBOX fixes unless he wants me to do it (just let me know, Mike). Anyway, Mike is a very knowledgeable guy and I am a very satisfied customer!

Hi- thanks for the AtariVox and now the AtariVox+! Can you describe the differences/changes made for the AtariVox+ vs. the original AtariVox? I realize the original AtariVox did not allow for a 2nd controller, but does the AtariVox+ have a pass-through for the 2nd controller? Either way, I am interested!

shadow460- can you point out the part of the schematic you are referring to? I am used to seeing this as an LED schematic symbol:

...and, because the LED obviously does not exist on a stock unit, is the associated resistor in the schematic also not present on the 2600?
What I saw in the schematic was where a typical lamp was connected to ground between the power switch and the 7805. If that's the case, it might have either been added to the schematic after the Woody shipped or it might simply have been left off the Woody after the schematic was drawn.
-
A.J.- late to the thread, obviously, but for people reading this thread for future reference: thanks for the schematic! Since you are attempting to be abundantly helpful in providing what the OP was asking for, perhaps you can enlighten us as to:
1. specifically how you would recommend an LED be connected in the schematic you posted, as well as type of LED to look for
2. recommended resistor value and connection in schematic
It is my understanding that the *location of the LED and resistor* in the schematic was the information the OP was seeking, and not simply a schematic, but I would be interested to hear your explanation as to how your posting of a schematic without this information was supposed to answer the OP's question. Do tell.

Yeah, it didn't show up for me in the appstore when I read this, but it did later in the day. Very well done app, with manuals, trivia/tidbits, lots of control options, and faithful to the originals. After the Pitfall! update, Activision is on a roll with these retro favorites!

I downloaded it. You have to pay for each gameCorrect, or purchase in packs.
...and you have to pay each time you play.Allan
Incorrect.

I bought a Heavy Sixer from Best Electronics about 1.5yrs ago. At least at that time, the prices for their systems were quite a bit less than what you'd pay for a heavy sixer on Ebay, and the thing that sealed the deal for me is that these systems have been reconditioned and are in excellent condition. I specifically asked for an older version without the channel switch on the back, and they complied. The unit I got was in mint condition- looks like it just came out of the box. Great experience with Bradley on this, joysticks, paddles, etc. Beats what I've found on eBay any day of the week.

I don't care about Ebay's rules because Ebay doesn't care about Ebay's rules. Do a search on Gweedo33 and his Atari games. I have nothing against Gweedo personally and think I've bought from him a couple of times in the distant past. But he constantly breaks Ebay's keyword spamming rule by writing NO BOX in his title, getting people like me searching for "Atari 2600 Box" to sort through his listings too. I've reported his items in the past and yet it seems he keeps relisting with these keyword spams with no repurcussions (sp?).
Philflound- believe it or not, I'm not trying to pick on you here, but some of what you say just doesn't make sense. What you seem to be saying above and in your previous posts is:
(1) Gweedo33 breaks ebay's rules and ebay does not enforce the rules and that is WRONG.
(2) Philflounder breaks ebay's rules and ebay does not enforce the rules and that is RIGHT.
How does that even make sense? (And that's not a rhetorical question I'm asking, BTW).
Look- I've been on ebay for 11 years and you're preaching to the choir with me about some of eBay's choices (limiting payment choices to ebay-owned Paypal, siding with buyers on bid retractions when they are obviously not "bidding mistakes", and charging ridiculous fees when ebay+paypal fees are combined) but if you really have a problem with ebay, nobody's forcing you to make money that way. There are other, smaller auction sites, and also Amazon, Craigslist, and a whole slew of other ways to make money that have nothing to do with ebay at all.
My friend just opened an Ebay store and is new to Ebay. He wants to sell lots of items, yet Ebay told him he's only allowed to put 100 items for the first month, yet they charge him the full $50 store fee. He also told me he has no rights to file an unpaid bidder if someone buys something and they don't pay. Does any of this make sense to you?
Right on the first part- they want to make sure you're not a con-artist via feedback before you can list too many items, and I agree they should not be charging the full amount for that time period.
Wrong on the second part- your friend is simply wrong on that one. eBay store owners can file unpaid bidder complaints just like anyone else. If he doesn't think so, tell him to talk to ebay customer support and he'll get a confirmation.

Philflound-
Ad-hominem argument: if you can't argue the facts in a post, try attacking the poster instead. Nice try, if a bit transparent.
I like the fact that you refuse to address any of the facts/substance presented in my posts (specifically regarding ebay rules, and regarding the "honor" of your own actions), and instead you resort to questioning my identity. I don't see how that's relevant to this thread. Perhaps you can enlighten me? I choose not to post personal information on any of the many forums I'm on, and that is my choice. I don't think that affects the quality of the posts I make or my contributions to any of the forums I'm on, nor does it change the facts I presented in this thread. Maybe you can tell me how knowing my identity changes the facts in the ebay policy links I've posted above?
Moreover, anyone can post a random picture and location information- if you have any idea of how people can actually prove their identity on an internet forum, I'd love to hear it (think about this one- I bet I can come up with a counter to just about any method you might suggest). And, while you're at it, perhaps you can actually respond (gasp!) to the substance in post #37 above.
And BTW none of this is me being outspoken- you'll know when that happens.
It's simply me letting you know that you're breaking the rules and then complaining about the results. Well I'll take that risk. I like the fact that you're so outspoken yet you hide anonymously in your AA account.

Philflound- interesting response. You seem to be in complete denial of the fact that you attempted to violate ebay rules not once, but twice (this is clearly spelled out in my post above). Whatever you think of ebay's policies, you agreed to those policies the minute you used their website to make a purchase.
For those who seem to be against me in this, oh well. I give everyone a fair shot at buying an item. If it goes unsold, then I think I can make offers.
You may think that, but the way you're going about it is against ebay rules (see my post above).
As for offering money for unsold items, you see it all the time on these auction shows. ... My offering money for an unsold item in this case is the same thing.
Ebay is not an auction show so it is not the same thing and, again, what you attempted to do was against ebay rules- not once but twice (see my post above).
Anyway, I'll bid on those that are within my price, let items go that are out of my reach, and will continue to make offers on items I have an interest in that don't sell on auction. If you don't like it, too bad.
And I don't think anyone here cares to stop you. Just note that a seller might not be as nice next time you try to make a side deal (yes, a side deal) or make an "arrangement" that shuts out all other potential bidders-- both of these things are against ebay rules. The seller can report you for either or both infractions, and you can have your account restricted or banned from ebay entirely for doing what you're doing. As you like to say: if you don't like it, too bad.

Philflound- sorry, but as an experienced ebay seller, I don't have much sympathy for you- I won't even say "that's the breaks". You said yourself in your very first post:
Some I bid on, some I don't because I feel they're too high. The ones that are too high that don't sell, I contact the seller and make them an offer.
Then, when HammR25 called you on it:
The seller probably just didn't have much respect for someone that intentionally waited until the auction was over and then offered him less than the reserve so when he actually got a higher bid, within the eBay system, he took it.
The guy will definitely get what's coming to him. That's more money in his paypal account.
You backpedaled a bit:
I didn't tell him I intentionally waited for his listing to see if it got a bid. I actually just watched it.
It's irrelevant whether you *told* the seller that's what you were doing- any experienced ebay seller can guess that themselves. You tried to bargain with a seller by waiting until his auction ended and then haggle on price. He chose to repost the auction *instead* of posting a buy-it-now at the price you requested, and instead of selling it to you outside of ebay, which makes it kind of obvious he was hoping for higher bids since he was doing it at the expense of more fees. He got a higher bid and didn't keep his "word" to someone who tried to bargain outside of ebay- you'd have no doubt preferred that he sell it to you outside of ebay, as well, as you indicate here:
I tried to pay him without ebay and he would have saved some money.
What you attempted (and failed) to do is against eBay rules, as stated here:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/rfe-spam-non-ebay-sale.html
"We don't allow our members to use eBay to contact each other to make offers to buy or sell items outside of eBay. Also, members can't use information obtained from eBay to contact each other about buying or selling outside of eBay.
Make sure you follow these guidelines. If you don’t, you may be subject to a range of actions, including limits of your buying and selling privileges and suspension of your account.
And as for this:
I'm not a side dealer. A sider dealer is someone who negotiates for item(s) in the listing before the auction is over and has the seller cancel or remove the items. I give a chance for the stuff to sell and if it doesn't, then I make an offer. You need to get your definitions straight. No, I think you need to get your definitions straight. "Side deals" also apply to buyers who attempt to buy the same or duplicate items from a seller outside of ebay- the key point is "outside of ebay". That's why it's called a "side" deal. You attempted to negotiate a "side deal" (by attempting to purchase an item listed on ebay- ended or not- outside of eBay). It was only because your attempt at a "side deal" failed that you tried to buy it through ebay. What you tried to do is against ebay rules, as stated above.
When that didn't work, you then made an "agreement" with the seller. Well, let's see what the eBay rules have to say about your "agreement":
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/buyer-rules-overview.html
These policies are intended to:
...
Make sure no buyer has an unfair advantage
...
You attempted to gain unfair advantage over other bidders in an eBay auction with your "agreement", which would've shut out all other bidders. As you can see above, this is also against ebay policies.
So, now that it's obvious that everything you attempted to do was against eBay rules and everything the seller did complied with ebay rules, I ask just how "honorable" were your actions?
Next time just bid on the auction like everyone else, wait for relisting, and don't try to bend the rules and then complain when things don't work out in your favor. You tried to skirt eBay rules at every turn and the seller did not, so you might want to get off that high horse and redefine "honor" to include not only other people keeping their word, but also your own actions.

fiddlepaddle- thanks for your very helpful post. I just wanted to post to confirm (for potential future readers) that this was, indeed, the problem. Working on getting full 9-pin passthru extension cables now.
Thread resurrection:
I am having some problems using Atari paddles with extension cables and I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this problem. When using the paddles through the extension cable (my extension cables are pretty long, at 20 feet), the fire buttons work, but rotating the dial has no effect at all. When I connect the paddles directly, I have no problems. Has anyone else experienced this? If I switch to 10' cables, will this likely solve my problem? Thanks in adv.
I bet your extension cable does not have all 9 wires in it, or possibly one or more are broken or somehow disconnected from the connector. Not all db9 extension cables run all wires, since not all wires are required for the joystick to work. Try a continuity check on each pin to see if this is the case...

Just sent LHE a tweet politely asking him to respond to AtariMod emails. He's tweeted since then but has ignored my tweet so far. Nice. I'll give him a day, then I need info on contacting the attorney general.
-
I can't believe he's posting on Twitter while ignoring this problem. Been trying to contact him for the past month via email and forum msging with no response, and I've been waiting for my Atari mod for months now.

I'm in depending on price.

Once again I go against my own word for posting here but yes I agree. Close the thread.cimerians- why did you ever type a letter in response to this thread in the first place? Just because you don't like the thread doesn't mean others won't get something from it. What a smug ^@$%#.

BDW- not at all. I'm just stating my experience with the Shield and correcting some common misconceptions. Calling the Shield a cinderblock, posting a picture of someone vomiting, and claiming the Shield is not portable? Now THAT'S what I'd call emotional.
...but I'm sure imagining I'm getting all worked up makes you feel better about not having a valid counterargument.
Tech specs are kind of hard to argue against, though, aren't they? Toodles.
