  1. Interesting topic... and one that I thought about all the time...

I do not leave a cartridge in my 2600 or 7800 systems... but when inserting older games sometimes I feel I have to "shove it in" since it seems not to want to go in naturally, is this normal? And if not, what can i do to remedy this too?

Hmm(just like others here) I've never had a 2600 cart slot quit working because of the contacts being too loose. Or even heard of anybody having that issue.

Anybody have first hand experience with a 2600 cart slot going bad because of this?

  2. great find!

i got my atari 7800 on ebay (last year) for a little over 75 cents i remember! lol... shipping was $10. it came with 8 games (mostly commons, except for "Mouse Trap") anyway... have fun!

  3. I guess I don't understand what you mean... If you're talking about an original game that was made to "tout" the "features" of the new system (show off the capabilities) I would have to say Combat, then. It was prepackaged with Atari 2600 for well over a decade I think! Combat and/or Pong (Video Olympics/Pong Sports) sounds about right... When I said "Pitfall" i was thinking that this was a game that exceeded what the 2600 was initially designed to do, which is why it was such a hugely popular game at the time.

  4. This is what I thought ("HOly Cow!") when I first played Kaboom! Addictive as hell... I got some friends addicted to this recently who play their Wii's and XBox's all the time. Not the best graphics in the world but downright... simple... dizzying... madness! :-) Very addictive gaming. Fun to play with buds at parties! Lol. Esp when they've had too much to drink. Frogger is another good one. Oh, and Ms. Pac-Man for the 2600 is amazing fun!

  5. I agree with most of this list, esp Ms Pac Man, but... MegaMania?!!!! That game sucks (imho) lol.

    I'll vote.

    1: Ms. Pac-Man

    2: Pitfall 2

    3: Space Invaders

    4: Pitfall!

    5: MegaMania

    6: Defender

    7: Super Cobra

    8: Adventure

    9: Asteroids

    10: Berzerk

  6. Oh, for some reason, I LOVE Yar's Revenge! LOL. I think to some people it can be an invigorating game, since the gameplay gets faster, etc (but what game doesn't?) I actually love Circus Atari, Kaboom, etc, games that get so fast you can't possibly win. lol.

I still don't like Barnstorming. I mean... what's the point?

No disrespect to HSW as he is a good programmer and a good guy but.......YARS REVENGE!!! That game is boring.

    Wp

I don't find Yar's Revenge boring but I do think it is overrated. It certainly isn't one of the frequent carts I pop into the VCS. I give it marks for being challenging.

That pretty much sums up my feelings on Yar's Revenge, which was the first one I thought of when seeing this thread - I don't hate it, but I don't understand why everyone else seems to like it so much.

Krull and Motocross Racer would be the other two that I hear a lot of love for that I don't particularly understand...

  7. Every Christmas back in the early 80's, my older sis and I always begged to get a new Atari because for some reason we always tore up the one we got the year before... ;-) LOL. Well, that Atari from 83 is now long gone and years later, I got a NES (everybody was getting one!) and got really into that hardcore... summer of 87.. burned down every tree and blew up every rock in Zelda on the NES.. lol.. then a few years later I realized I really liked the arcade classics so much more. As all of my friends and family got Playstation XBOX portapotty this and that's, all I wanted was an Atari, an original, at that, and now I have one, and own over 200 games for it. I love my 7800!! Nothing beats classic arcade action! I hate RPGS and those new fancy $100 games (except for Zelda, that is!)

  8. I play my 7800 each and every day, for an hour, to unwind and relax before work in the morning for 30 minutes and then before bedtime at night. My partner sometimes gets irritated (lol! to say the least) but here are my weekly top 10...

    1. Tutankham (srsly. its fun!)

    2. Crystal Castles

    3. Lock N' Chase

    4. Mousetrap

    5. Ms. Pac-Man (2600)

    6. Yar's Revenge

    7. Robin Hood (for HSC)

    8. Montezuma's Revenge (2600) (irritating!)

    9. Asteroids (7800)

    10. Berserk

  9. Actually, "Halloween" is a quite fun little game... Pixelated blood spurts, really SPOT ON Halloween theme music, it's so fun... lights flickering, buzzing out, hallways, kids running about as bait. lol. you can't go wrong!

Yeah, I saw the auction. I'm still upset for passing up a chance to buy it a few years ago at $120.

It's a horrible game, and I'm a casual Atari collector - I'm mostly interested since I'm a fan of the movie.

That being said, just because nobody makes me a realistic offer doesn't mean I don't want to hear what they're offering.

  10. i haven't got that far! only went through the castle twice. looks like you're on your own!

    haha

    good luck!

Is it even possible to get through that 3rd gate? Anyone? I've had no luck at all with climbing the wall. Must not be going at it right.

  11. I absolutely love my 7800 for this very reason! It will play mostly anything, I don't have a 5200 (yet.) I also have my PS2 hooked up through it and my old skool NES and collect games for them all. But Atari is my first love and I play my 7800 at least an hour a day to unwind after work and before bed.

I recently got a 7800 and I honestly like it. What's disappointing though is the minuscule library written for the 7800 (and for the Colecovision as well). I love the fact that I can pop a 2600 cart without having to hookup the 2600 console itself or plug in some expansion module. This is a plus over the Colecovision.

I enjoy playing Centipede in Team mode. My son and I love it. Joust is good as well.

  12. I read in the article posted about him that he only had like 50 copies or something.

I don't understand why the programmer isn't a member here at AA, I mean THIS place is the very heart and hub of the Atari programming world right now and most of the Atari gamers hang out here and play the new games/talk about old ones. It just doesn't add up why he isn't amongst us.

It could be because so many users here trashed his game based on seeing one screenshot of it.

I'm not criticizing. I'm just surmising.

I'm guilty of being one of the loudest trashing his game based on a screenshot. He did himself a disservice by only posting one screenshot and I don't recall if he ever provided details on the gameplay. The reality is that the concept and gameplay isn't all that bad.

The fact that he sold out in 45 minutes is misleading without knowing exactly how many carts he sold. So, if one is going to tout that feat then tell us exactly how many carts that was.

In fairness I provide a link to an article publicizing his game.

  13. I noticed that, and I tried playing it on Stella (emulator) but it's friggin' hard as hell!!! LOL! I might give it another shot tho and post my score (bad though it may be.)

    How is Montezuma's Revenge going?

    B

Well, with only four submission so far, including my own, it could stand a bit more attention.

  14. I know that you guys probably get alot of newbies saying "i'm gonna make a game! here's what its gonna be about" before even starting, but we should take this as a hint as a group and realize that kindness and support goes a long way.
