Is the site down? The link won't work for me.

That's pretty cool. Needs a more retro case, but I like the idea.

I don't know if it's a heavy sixer.See image in post #2 of this topic. Pay no attention to the different style of woodgrain on Sears units -- what you want to look at is the shape and thickness of the black plastic at the lower edge and ends of the woodgrain panel.
Well than, strike my previous post.
It turns out I have two Light-Sixers. I had always assumed my six switch VCS was a Heavy-Sixer because it reads "Sunnyvale" on the bottom, but the plastic molding is like the Light-Sixer. It's also much heavier than my Four-Switcher and Vader. But I was mistaken, unless Sunnyvale produced heavy internal units with the later molding. That seems unlikely.
Thanks for the info.

The image was pretty much just for fun. I was doing a bunch of stock photos for general use in magazines, new sites, etc on that day with that model and we added this one at the end of the night for kicks.
I was short on cords. I really didn't look into the box when I took it before the shoot. I just had the power cord that runs of the bottom of the frame.
I'm trying to remember why the joy stick is backwards. Or at least have a witty answer. I want to say it was an artistic choice, but I'm thinking it's more because that was the image were she had the best facial expression and was holding it in a way that we could see it was a joy stick.
It's the subject that matters. The girl is pretty, well framed, and expertly lit. She's full of energy and the photo conveys all the fun of classic gaming. The only people that would notice the cords and joystick errors are hardcore gamers like those of us on atariage. Like I said before, great stuff.

woohoo! I got one
Thanks al! (one ordered, that is.) Can't wait to have a place for my cge and second edition cart... wonder if they'll both fit...They don't, unless you take the insert out.

I bet a custom insert could be cut from cardboard that would allow for two carts. If you really wanted to fit them in there. It would probably be easy to design by using the original for measurements.

It's all good. Collectors and paper Crafters alike will have fun; if you have printer with ink, left over paper but are broke you can make your own. I can definitely empathize.
On the other hand, if you are hard core about collecting you can get the Official box from the Atariage store, and that will also help the hobby out as a whole.
Of course if you make your own you will be inclined to take pics and brag overall about what you made and praise kain for the template.
There are good points to both boxes, DIY and Turnkey, both. Heck they both make the game look better and a boxed cart looks great on the shelf, regardless of the box.
KUDOS to both kain_kusanagi and Albert for helping us both enjoy Vintage Gaming a bit more!!!
Nathan
Thanks for taking the time to write such a supportive message. As a Do-It-Yourselfer you know we can't help but do it ourselves when we get an idea and see a solution.
I'm not angry with anyone who feels I'm stealing Al's thunder. Hopefully they'll feel differently after learning I started this project long before Al made his available. I just wish people wouldn't jump to negative conclusions. I've apologized to Al and if he thinks this thread needs to be deleted I'll understand.

Cool stuff. I liked the spilled popcorn, it sells the gamer lifestyle. Pretty girl, is she your sister? What were the pictures for?
BTW, the 2600 isn't plugged into the TV or the power. I've noticed this is very common with a lot of video game promo shoots. I know it's just a prop and all, so I'm not saying it's bad or anything. The worst I've seen was a picture used for a Video Game College with a guy holding a gamepad backwards. Not upside down, backwards. As in joysticks toward the TV.

Hey Al, sorry for posting my custom Halo 2600 boxes. I didn't know you were planing to sell your own. If you want to delete my thread and related posts I'll understand. It seems to have pissed some people off that I posted them. I wasn't aware of your box and I never intended hurt your sales.

"Albert's Halo 2600 box" There's a box for Halo 2600? I had no idea. Do you have a link?
You posted your boxes in three different threads in this forum and somehow didn't manage to see the Halo 2600 Boxes Available post? That seems... peculiar.
--Will
I stumbled on it last night. Thanks for the link anyway. The reason I didn't notice Al's box thread is I was mainly posting online in the Atari 2600 announcement thread posted on the front page. Until last night when I posted this thread the only other thread I posted in was the Halo 2600 order thread linked from the 7th page of the Halo 2600 front page story. I wasn't active here until 2600 was released and I just wasn't lurking in the full forum yet. I started work on these boxes a couple weeks ago and this thread was my first post outside of the Halo 2600 article's forum thread linked on the front page.

That wasn't really my point, it was for the fact that the guy is shitting on Marc's Halo box sale.

I had no idea there was an official box. I was only posting in the Halo 2600 thread on the front page and I didn't enter the 2600 forum until I posted this thread. My intent was never to "shit" on anyone's box. I started work on these for two reasons. I wanted a box and manual, but my Halo 2600 cart didn't come with them and I thought others would want the same. I started work on my boxes and manual weeks ago and didn't post them here until after I had printed folded and tested them all. I literally took a picture of it folded while the glue was still wet and posted this thread unaware there was an official box.
Now that I'm aware of the official box I don't think this effects sales of it because those who want an official box will still only have one choice. My boxes don't look anything like the official one and have to be printed, cut, and glued and in the end they'll never look as professional as the official box.
I could understand your concern if I had copied the box and posted instructions on how to rip it off, but I created mine from scratch without the knowledge that Albert was planing to release a box of his own. Had I known a box was being planed I probably wouldn't have bothered to do all the work to make my own. Again I want to stress that I posted this for the community to enjoy because to my knowledge there wasn't ever going to be a box for Halo 2600.
I'm sorry if this still pisses you off, but I assure you I had no intention to "shit" on anything. I was just excited about Halo 2600 and wanted to contribute.

How do you know a sealed game works? I need to know a game works to be in my collection. It would drive me nuts to have a whole shelf of "what ifs".

I couldn't agree more. I'm a pretty serious collector, but I don't even care if the games are complete. So long as the label is decent and it works I'm happy. If the box, manual, etc. are cheap I'll go for it, but if the cart alone is only a buck or so I have to say I prefer the small shelf space. In fact I often fold the boxes flat and store them separately.

I prepared a Photoshop template. You'll need the Atari Fonts available on AtariAge or you'll have to replace the text with other fonts.

The resolution is 300 dpi, but that doesn't matter. The images in the zip file are full size. You don't have to do anything accept print them. If all you have is a regular inkjet you might have to cut the image into separate front and back images before printing. However the best thing to do is copy the one you want to print onto a usb drive and take it into a copy shop and have them print it on a 11x17 paper.
Sweet! I'm head to Kinko's first thing tomorrow.
As for a silver manual I'll look into it. The reason it's black is I used a Defender manual as a reference and I figured it would match with the art. I'm not sure if I have any 2600 silver manuals, but I have a 7800 silver manual, but I doubt they are the same. If you have a link to front and back of of a 2600 silver manual I can use as reference as see if it's possible combine with the art. That's completely awesome. I just picked up Albert's Halo 2600 box and its amazing. I was only bummed it didn't come with an instruction booklet. Now I'll finally have one that matches the box.
I'm also going to print up your silver box to go along with my silver label cartridge. The manual would complete the set.

As for the manual, what's on the back? I need to know what both the front and back look like so I can emulate it. I'll be keeping the original dimensions and the inside and edit the cover into a silver style.

I like the look of the Six switcher best, but to me the 4 switcher works just fine. I tend to play on a Jr because it's small and convenient though.

Lol, yeah I joined last year to ask a technical question I had about a busted piece of Atari tech. I never got any reply so I gave up. When Halo 2600 came out I logged back in and I think I'll probably become somewhat of a regular.

Love the box, the manual is awesome, loved the video review. Especially the video review. Great stuff.
Requesting a brief tutorial for printing this stuff at the right size and resolution, plus assembly tips.
edit: you should do a silver box style manual cover.
Thanks, glad you liked the video.

When I was in middle school I bought a box of Atari 2600 games at a yard sale and they all had Bill A. written on them in pencil. It bothered me so I tried erasing it, but whoever wrote it pressed so hard the indent was just as visible as the pencil mark. I eventually just gave up and accepted that Bill A. would always be a part of my collection. When I turned 16 I started working at a grocery store and the man running the produce section was named Bill Auto. I worked there for years without putting the two together and then eventually quit to go off to college. One day I got out an old 2600 game to play and saw the name and realized it must have been him. I wish I'd realized it back then so we could have talked classic gaming on our breaks. Instead we probably discussed less important topics like politics and world events

Wow, amazing work! All I need now is a PAL copy to put in it
Where could I go to get this printed on good quality cardboard and glossy paper? Just a Stationary Store?
I had mine printed on 11x17 copy paper on a laser printer at a copy shop. It doesn't have the best color, but it's bright enough and the paper is smooth. I then glued it to a flattened cracker box, but a large cereal box would work too, pretty much any thin compressed cardboard. I don't know of anywhere that prints directly on cardboard, but a print/copy shop in your area might have a super heavy stock of paper that is close enough to cardboard for your liking.
If you can't get it printed on a glossy enough paper for your liking, you can have it laminated. Laminated paper looks great and lasts forever.

Mine are:
Atari Sunnyvale
Model Number CX-2600
S.N. 84368L
I have another, but I don't know if it's a heavy sixer. It's a Sears TeleGames six switch unit:
Sears Taiwan
Model No. 637.99743
S.N. 81141028

The worst games are usually shoveled out by some fly by night developer who got their hands on some unfinished stinker they figured they could flip for profit. They manufacture a couple hundred sell them in the back of a magazine and are never heard of again. Some kid gets tricked by the ad, gets it in the mail for $20 or $30, hates it and trades it to a friend or just flat out throws it away. The few that survive after 25 years end up being some kind of holy grail to collectors. Personally I don't care about rare games if they are suck, but the rare games that are great, like Congo Bongo for the Intellivision do interest me. Although I'm still usually too cheap to buy'em.

I use a 4 switch AC adapter with my Jr, if that helps.
-
Wow! Well Done!
Thanks, I printed it at a copy shot on 11x17 and pasted it to cardboard so it's tested and full scale. It turned out pretty convincing. Of course the quality of paper can have a effect.

To all who wish they had a box to go along with their Halo 2600 cart I've prepared several color and style choices as well as a manual with custom back cover art. Click the following link to download a zip file with everything you need to start printing. I'll leave it up to you to figure out how to print and apply to cardboard. The manual is pretty easy, just print it double sided, (as in back to back) and staple the pages together.

I've added this post to the official Halo 2600 threads just in case some new members who only check the front page might miss it. For everyone else I hope this helps and feel free to use it as a template for other game boxes. I still have my original Photoshop files so if you really want to get your hands dirty just email me and I'll send it to you.
Look below for samples.
Oh and this is my video review about the game:
