Y, but before we totally shoot down the OP, lets humor this for a moment or two. Later into the SNES and even Genesis life spans we saw the FX games and Virtua Racing. These were done with onboard chips inside the game carts themselves. Nintendo upped the ante later in N64's life with the memory expansion module (for the console itself in this case). Also, realize that this was already done in the 2600's life span. Look at Pitfall II and its music processor chip. Possible: Maybe? Degree of difficulty: Extreme.

Noob Question - What do you do with your carts?
tz101 replied to Charles Nilsen's topic in Atari 2600
What are they i havent heard of them? -Darren- Gimmicky two-ended game cartridges for the 2600 system. They had a separate game in each end of the cart. See pics below. -
Regarding OP: Most of it boils down to fickle consumer tastes and popular perception (see VHS vs. Betamax). If some parents were thinking of investing in a game system for their kid around the time of the Jaguar release, might they just hold on a little longer until the next greatest thing (read Playstation) came along? I mean its not like Sega and Nintendo suddenly stopped releasing quality games about that time either. Look at Donkey Kong Country for SNES compared to Jaguar games in general. No real advantage in getting that system if I am a parent making wise financial decisions. Same reasoning goes with 3D0, Dreamcast, or any such failed venture. Mainly poor timing for entering the crowded gaming marketplace along with word-of-mouth about greater things to come. Everybody learned lessons with Betamax and laser disc video formats in the 80s. They will try their best not to be burned that way again.

Better to seal spare consoles in vacuum storage bags away from UV light. They will last until the apocalypse, and still play too. -
I didn't until I picked one up for $1 yesterday at a thrift store. It worked with a VCR to produce live-action light gun games on your TV. Only had about 6 games before the company went bankrupt.

Spider Fighter. I love the colors and nice visuals along with the challenging gameplay. None of the rainbow visuals games should be considered. Some of them are too dizzying to look at because programmers thought rainbow stripes looked cool.

I think we need a seperate NES board here
tz101 replied to Dittohead Servbot #24's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I have thought the same, and even for SNES and Genesis. I mean AA already has sections for Colecovision and Intellivision. But I can sort of understand that they cannot be all-encompassing, I mean where would it end? However, if you are looking for a single site that covers every system out there, classics to current, with lots of downloadable content, then look nowhere else but the link in my signature. Very nice indeed... -
How Blip the Digital Game really works
tz101 replied to jboypacman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
It's a fairly complicated cam-driven mechanism. I would think the engineers at Tomy would have had it easier to truly have made this an electronic digital game, as the misleading title leads one to believe. I had one as a teenager, but no fun if you are alone with no one to play it with (two player option only on this game). I wish I still had it as a collector's piece. -
If you're attracted to a sexy videogame character then you might want to see her strut her stuff in slow motion. Would be kinda pathetic though. Except that some games I've seen actually have the word, "PAUSE" pasted in the center of the screen when the game is paused. Using slow motion feature with those is a big nuisance because of that reason alone. Every other screen has the word, "PAUSE" boldly in the center of the screen during slo-mo. Not fun at all.

On the underside of the console, where does it say the system was made? If it says "Made in Sunnyvale, CA", it is a heavy sixer. If it says, "Made in Taiwan" it is most likely a light sixer. Four switches on the top of the console obviously equates to a 4-switch model. Your reset switch can most likely be switched out with a replacement from Best Electronics and the console will be good as new.

Whatever happened to Chris Houlihan

Here's a youtube clip of how to find the Chris Houlihan room: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXp124VgFrw -
I have always wondered about the long-term affects of slow-motion controller buttons on game consoles and cartridges. If I understand the concept correctly, most of them operate on the premise of a switch that effectively pulses the start/pause button on and off successively at fraction-of-a-second speeds. Now this leads me to wonder about how this affects the long-term lifespan of internal electronic components. My first inclination is that this must exert excessive fatigue on IRC's, processor chips, resistors, fuses and so forth. For instance, if a specific chip or resistor is rated at a life-expectancy of one million cycles, isn't regular use of slow-motion just accelerating the failure of said electronic component? Any thoughts...

I'm surprised a pawn shop is giving anything for 2600's these days. I pawned mine back in the early 80's for $50 which I promptly paid back and still have it and the games to this day. All I see in pawn shops around my area are newer gen systems like 360 and PS2. Most pawn shops do not loan money on older stuff like that, from my experience.

I've had Space Shuttle from its release so it was never a mystery to me. The console overlay helps a lot. I did not get the overlays.I figure there must be pics here at AA,im going to check. But how to print them to size?anyone know how,im pretty useless at this stuff.Thanx! Go to the link in my signature and look under the Atari 2600 tab off the top of the main page. There are scans of almost everything, including the Space Shuttle console overlay. Download and print it at 1:1 scale. Probably need some legal size (11" x 14") paper though. The scan is hi res-and top quality because I scanned my own for the site. Hi,and thanx for your help,Where exactly?I went to your link, and it took me to a site called"SILVERMOONXTREME"I clicked on the ATARI tab and still couldn't find the overlays. VERY nice site BTW!! I posted them to Silver Moon Extreme last summer, but for some unknown reason they never got posted on the 2600 rarity guide. Here are the images you need for the 2600 4-switch woody or Vader models:

I like some of your 5200 stuff. What site will you be listing this on?
-
I recommend beginning by visiting thrifts around your home town. Goodwill, Salvation Army, St. Vincent De Paul, etc. Take notes as you visit. Next, look on Craigslist.org, Ebay, shopgoodwill.com and Gamegavel.com, but use some caution and common sense judgment here. Be aware that every price you see listed on these sites is not automatically fair market value. There are quite a few idiots listing things at stupid prices these days. Listing price does not equate to selling price in a majority of cases.

Don't know that specific controller, but have seen some controllers go from blown fuses/resistors over the years. There is usually at least one resistor on the controller's PCB. A multi-tester should allow you to diagnose if this is the case with yours.
