Myth 1. The NES's resolution is 256x224
Facts: All NESs output 240 lines. NTSC CRT type TVs, which NESs were designed to use, can only show 262.5 lines each frame, and some of those are used for VBlanking purposes. The casing that holds the glass tube cuts off some lines from the top and bottom, as does the fact that the glass tube is not a perfect square. Programmers realized this, and used the time normally spent drawing these lines for other things as people could not see them. NTSC NESs display those lines, and even in normal CRTs some evidence of this is visible. PAL NESs do output all 240 lines in a letterbox arrangement because the PAL tube can display 312.5 lines, so the image displayed is smaller than the tube. PAL gamers can probably notice the artifacts left by programmers not properly refreshing the top and bottom 8 lines.
Never heard that one before.
NES resolution has always been 256x240.
The Name Table holds "tile index values." Tiles themselves are 8x8
pixels. The entire Name Table itself is 32x30 tiles (256x240 pixels).
And we see no artifacting because we have PAL carts to go in our PAL NES's

Shocking I know

I'm not a Jag person (yet) so I don't know if you're using RCA jacks or what
but if your not it could be the differences between PAL and NTSC channel frequencies
The sound for NTSC is transmited on a duifferent frequencie to PAL so you
can pick up the Sound or the picture but not both.
Of course if your using RCA then somthing is definitly wrong

and other stuff like vertical scrolling.Actualy vertical and horizontal scrolling are simple, it's when you do diagonal scrolling that it gets tricky

Of course it is, but I wasn't referring to that. There were mappers that didn't allow vertical scrolling, while others did.
I really hate to quote technical docs but vertical scroling is built into the console.

I am by no means an expert and I know MMC1 has a Scroll/Pan register
But vertical scrolling has nothing to do with the type of mapper used.

I'v been playing Captain Skyhawk today and the high score screen reminded
me of a tech demo that used every availible sprite to make crazy patterns.
I know everyone will say SMB3 so I'll say upfront that I already know that one

What other NES games push the limits of what the nes can do ?

All your _________ are belong to us.Sorry, had to say it.

If I croak it before 2023 it will probably end up back in the local thrift store.

After that I'll write a will and instruct that all my many combat carts are
smashed into 1 billion pices and their ashes scattered at sea

Upon my demise I would like the games to be sold off so other people can
get some enjoyment out of them (Unless my future wife or kids enjoy them too
)Atari forever
(unless you've got an Eprom in there, then it should be "Atari for no less than 20 years"

I'm looking into making NES mapper0 boards. And making your own PCB's is fairly easy (and cheap)
I'm sure you could do a small run of 7800 boards to gauge interest. and get
somone to make some nice profesional boards if theres enough interest.
I know I'd be willing to pay more for a "real" 7800 game

I had no idea the US version had different label art.
I followed chrisbid's link and boy is that US sonic lame.

The doctor had woke me up and told me that I had had multiple seizures and bleeding from the eyes
Sounds like every other VB game

It only took me a week to figure out I'm loading X and storing A
And I want to code a game? Could take a few years at that rate

in no particular order:
Kaboom! - 2600
SMB3 - NES
Boulder Dash - C64 (original platform ????)
Asteroids - Arcade
REZ - Dreamcast
DDR - Arcade
Pikmin - Gamecube
Doom - IBM P.C
Perfect Dark - N64
Galaga - Arcade

And it would be cool if there was another contest.I am still working on the patches, so maybe that's some extra motivation too.

I can't believe you gave up already
This clenches it, too many people own this game that have never reached for the end. I am going to come up with a good prize for a second "beat thrust contest" This game isn't that hard when you have something to shoot for, and have a clear set goal.
I'm still strugling with the reverse gravity.
Controling the pods underground is damn hard when you pick them up and they have to swing all the way around.
I end up losing control and getting flung into a wall.

But I'm not going to give up until I see the "ShowMaster Subroutine"
And it would be cool if there was another contest.

Poor Luigi.

No one knows who he is. At least it seems Nintendo knows they've been neglecting him. Hopefully he'll have better roles in the future.
I love reading his diary in Paper Mario
Very funny. They've known they've been neglecting him for a long time.

Of all the people who have asked for people here to program their ideas
for them this one has to be the most ..... recent

Actually I think the Jag is the only platform (covered here) where a team effort might be a good idea.

Ahh the call of the wild

You got some great games there.
I hate "going back" for games. There will always be somone who will beat
you to it unless your the first person through the doors in the morning (and I'm not a morning person)
Anyway good luck with your Atari hunting.

Last release here was Tony Hawk 3.
It had a few standout games (three in my opinion -- Conkers Bad Fur Day, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark).
Standout games :
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Conker's BFD
Lylat Wars
Zelda: OoT
Zelda: Majora's Mask
Paper Mario
Super Mario 64
Jet Force Gemini
Donky Kong 64
Resident Evil 2
Kirby 64
And thats just from the 19 I own.
I'm sure I'll find many more top notch games that get little to no respect.
Blurry graphics, poor polygon performance, insanely expensive carts, terrible controller
I'd rather pay $99 for a solid Cart than $99 for a flimsy sliver of plastic.
Yeah the controller isn't very well made but the design is perfect.
poor polygon performance? So you bought a SATURN? WTF?

-
Why are there different versions of ROMs ?
You'd think that once all the EPROMS on the arcade board where dumped and
named that you wouldn't need to do it again.
I mean the data isn't going to change significantly, or AT ALL, in between mame releases.
So WTF?????
-
One of the best finds I'v ever come across
Super Mario 64
Donky Kong 64
Jet Force Gemini
Goldeneye
Lylat Wars
Mortal Kombat 4
Zelda OoT
Zelda Majora's Mask (Gold game pak)
2 controler pak's (1 with a Turok 2 lable)
all $5 each, CIB and in great condition
:D
:D
I already had a compleate Zelda OoT but couldn't pass it up for $5.
Anyone know if the Gold Majora's Mask is common ? I'v only ever seen the Grey ones.

Yes
The Xenophobe is just the 7800 lable (which looks a lot better IMO) so
if you don't want to accept it thats OK
I'm still working on a few ideas too
