Maybe so. I've always had a soft spot for Space Cavern. It was the only shooter besides Space Jockey (yawn) that I had as a kid and I still get it out every now and then.

Please help! I'm looking for a game I used to play......
candiru replied to miss_ping's topic in Atari 2600
That's exactly what I was thinking too, moycon. I was about to post it when I saw that Nathan suggested Super Cobra. Couldn't remember if S.C. had those dark levels or not since I haven't played it much. In Planet Patrol you fuel up by setting down on a landingstrip and there is a little fuel truck that drives out. If that helps you remember anything, miss_ping. Maybe there's a foreign hack of this??? I see that this is posted from the Netherlands. -
My cat's only interest in games is making me lose the occasional life when I'm playing the 2600. Right now I've got a bunch of stuff crammed into one little room, so when I'm sitting on the floor in front of the TV (Like God intended Atari to be played) there isn't room for anything to get through. Well, my cat is pretty wimpy in addition to having shorter than normal legs so she doesn't jump too well. It's pretty handy that she can't get on the kitchen counters though. When she wants through to look out the window, I have to raise the controller so she can walk underneath--no good for twitch games. If I don't let her by she sits and stares, which is you know...well it's kind of creepy...having some little animal just staring at you....

When I started accumulating games I didn't even know there were other collectors. I just happened to find some 2600 carts at a junk store and it sparked the memories of Saturday afternoons, looking at video game catalogues and imagining having all of those games. I enjoy learning about value and rarity, but I have no intention of trying to profit from my hobby. I've noticed a change just in the short time I've been collecting. It's kind of like going out to your favorite secluded fishing hole and finding a bunch of fools dumping litter and dynamite fishing. Maybe that's an extreme comparison, but I'm not a big fan of all the uneducated opportunists cropping up.

Here's a link to where you can find some information on folks who do this sort of thing' date=' very reliable too. Link

Aside from the good old CX-40, my favorite joystick that I own is the Suncom Slik Stik. It's very responsive and precise. My only dislike about it is that the button is kind of small so it can hurt your thumb after awhile on games that are buttonmashers. Also someone is probably going to come in here touting the Epyx 500J. But don't listen to them, I once saw a 500J kick a puppy. I think some of the early advertisements for it even bragged about this feature until public outcry forced them to drop that particular ad campaign.

Forgive me for my ignorance and for being slightly off-topic, but what is it that makes River Patrol more desired/expensive than other rarity 9s?

I keep a list of my 2600 games, but not for any of my other systems. I used to write down the date, where I got them, and price, but I've slacked off for several months now. It bugs me a little bit that I don't have them down but I generally remember where I got something and how much I paid, and even what order I got it, but otherwise my perception of time is pretty sorry. It's a mixed blessing that my wife is very gifted at remembering exactly when things happened and other calendar events, because she saves my ass sometimes. It is a little irritating though that she's always there to correct me when I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. "When was that?, about a year ago? --"No, it will be exactly 2 and a half years ago this Friday. Remember? You were wearing that striped shirt. And you're 26, not 25."-- "Dammit!" But, I've gotten off track.... I take great pains to keep my 2600 games organized. Separated by company then alphabetized. I keep most of my games in the interlocking cartridge cases, which means an extensive reorganization when I get new games. I'm also anal enough to try to arrange them so that the end of a company section doesn't end up starting a new row. No "widows or orphans" so to speak. I know somewhat of the feelings you have. I had some mild OCD-like tendencies that surfaced during my middle school years. Weird little things, like if I was shooting baskets, I'd feel better if I ended on a multiple of 5. Or if I tapped the fingers on my right hand twice that I should maintain symmetry by following up with the left hand. Probably the weirdest was when I was learning to type. Our teacher told us that we should practice even when we weren't in front of a keyboard by just moving our fingers as though striking the keys. I practiced this way and it turned into a habit. Sometimes I'd see or hear a phrase and even if I didn't twitch my fingers, I'd be aware of the appropriate fingers and mentally go through the typing. I don't think anyone else ever noticed what I was doing, but I eventually got sick of myself, and was lucky enough to be able to put it behind me. I've never really talked about it, but the honesty of Kaz's post really struck me. I hope he realizes that other people deal with similar things and he's not alone. Almost any collector is a little compulsive. If it's only within your gaming hobby it might not be that big of a deal, but if you're unhappy about it and it affects your life in other ways you owe it to yourself to take action.

Thanks, very interesting. Is this something you were just carrying around in your noggin, or is there a specific book or website you can recommend that had that and similar bits of trivia?

I was looking through some of my game manuals yesterday and I happened to notice that on the back of the Towering Inferno instructions it says that it's licensed from 20th Century Fox. A simple IMDB search yielded, The Towering Inferno, a film from 1974. Anybody have any idea why Fox wouldn't have released it under their own label? Looking through the manuals here at AA I see that the earliest Fox games are dated 1982, and that Towering Inferno is also from '82. Is it possible that U.S. Games approaching Fox about licensing a movie title for a game kickstarted their own game division? Or is it more likely that Fox figured on an easier profit just by selling a license than expending the energy to create a game on their own? My theories are probably way off base, but I still want to know. What gives?

I think $50 for that set up isn't too bad. I agree that it comes down to what games come with it, and maybe if they include boxes or manuals. If it's just a bunch of butt-common 2600 carts that are going to be duplicates for you, that deal becomes a little less appealing. As a starter set-up for someone with no games at all it's a nice package though. Finding one with a working power supply is a plus though, as the PS alone often commands a price somewhere around the $20 mark.

I've been looking for this one too. I try to be pretty cheap on my Atari purchases, but I'd be tempted to give $15 for a copy I could get locally. You'd be lucky to pay less than $10 on ebay, then $2-3 on shipping if you're lucky, then wait around for a week or more hoping it gets to you without any problems. Yeah, I'd probably go for it unless the label is really trashed.

Why do you think so many Atari joysticks have chew-marks on them? He's probably making side offers on a Mindlink controller too with a slightly different picture.

I have my share of contributions that aren't *ahem* helpful, but I admit that I also get minorly annoyed seeing a string of "me too" posts. I don't think a post cap is a bad idea, but I'm not sure it's necessary. A lot of the overeager posters tend to calm down on their own after awhile.

This might be the biggest crock I've ever read

"Forms of excepted payment includes Paypal (preferred at the above email address) Heh, his grammatical ignorance made the meaning of that the exact opposite of what he intended. Well, I found it amusing. -
How do you feel about nudity?

Not sure if this applies to a Lynx, but I know that on laptop computers and such, they often recommend gently massaging the affected section of the screen to bring back dead pixels. I could be way off base with this, but it probably wouldn't hurt anything to give it a try.

Your personal classic video game demons..

Let's see, I wish I would have kept the boxes and manuals to my Atari 2600 and the games I had as a kid. I swear the system box used to be up in the attic, but I never managed to find it. Mom sold the house and moved a couple of months ago, and I wasn't able to make it back to help out the day the attic got cleaned. I understand they hauled a lot of stuff to the dump. I also wished I would have started looking for games a few years earlier than I did when they were more plentiful and cheaper in the wild. This one is probably foolish, but I'll always wonder about it. I remember that we returned one of our games to the store because it didn't seem to play right. I was pretty young and we only had that game, for about 2 days so I don't remember the exact title. But it was either Shark Attack or the much rarer Lochjaw. It was more than likely just the Shark Attack variant, of course I'll never know for certain. I do know that the reason we returned it was because the diver would sometimes get stuck in the maze, which I understand was one of the bugs of the earlier release. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of Shark Attack to see if I can make the diver get stuck the same way. -
Weird, they seem to have had an auction for the same doll once before. I guess it wasn't haunted that time. Looking at some of their other previous items, they've also auctioned off some human skulls. "This was once a real human being with hope and dreams. She once laughed and cried."

Chad, in case you're wondering whether there would be any interest in doing a second run of CC2s, if you're still functioning after completing the first batch, you can count me in as someone who would be very interested in purchasing one.

If they actually had any clue as to what you were talking about, they'd probably just tell you to buy the PS2 Activision collection and earn your patch that way. It kind of makes me wonder though, I can't recall seeing a cut-off date for awarding patches in any of the manuals.

I also immediately though of Space Shuttle when I saw this topic. Since that's been listed already, I guess I'll mention F-14 Tomcat by Absolute as fairly involved. I haven't really given this one a lot of play but it's similar to Space Shuttle in that it utilizes the console switches. Aside from these 2 are there any other games that uses the console switches in a similar manner?

rogueleader, I'll have to try that. Explaining it to my wife: Well yeah, I've been looking at more porno lately, but it's only because it helps me buy more Atari stuff.
