What are the best game and watches?
candiru replied to chairmonkey4406's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've got that one. It was a fun little game. IIRC it had 2 game modes but I don't really remember what the second one was. I haven't played it for probably 10 or more years though. -
I find it fascinating that given the limited hardware the companies still managed to give their games a distinctive look and feel. Activision managed a crispness that you just don't see in other games. I have to admit though that the day I came home with my first Imagic games, Atlantis, Cosmic Ark and Demon Attack, I was pretty blown away because I'd never seen anything quite like that coming out of my Atari. I like the soccer analogy too, but if I have to pick one it's Activision because I replay those games more often. I like a lot of the timed games too since I enjoy trying to beat my best times. Plus, those little grooves and logo in the Imagic handles are a nuisance to get dust out of. This is why you'll so often hear "May you clean nothing but Imagic carts" used as a curse by classic gamers.

Only once. I did it jsut to see what would happen when I got all the treasures (you just get a better assorment of vitamins). Usually I avoid it because it's not worth the trouble. Glad to see I'm not the only one who had trouble with it. Tempest This game holds a special place for me since it's the first NES game I ever beat. I've gotten that treasure before, but it's a tricky one. The screens are split in the worst possible place. If I try for it I go after it early on in the game in case I waste too many lives on it.

That would be pretty funny. I almost guarantee you'd lose a lot of bargaining leverage by whipping out a portable 2600 at the fleamarket though.

You'll also find some text lables with a glossy finish and some that are matte.

If you really just want to play the games, don't worry about paying a premium for the boxes and instructions. Instructions are readily available online. If you want to go for boxes, make sure you've got room for them. Even though it might not seem like much now, depending on how much you get into it a video game collection can turn into a major space hog. There have been other discussions about being a player or collector, but there really isn't a right or wrong way to enjoy the hobby. Hey, it's your hobby, make it fun for yourself and don't stress too much over it. I think a lot of the folks here fall somewhere in between player and collector. Personally, I don't seek out boxed games. I buy them if I come across them and they're a good deal. It's a nice bonus, but mostly I'm just after the game itself.

I was going to lead with Whoa, but I see Artlover beat me to it. Thanks Ze_ro. I have a pair of mintyfresh Commodore paddles that I haven't used much, but I thought they seemed a little off when I tested them. Thanks for the rundown.

Back in the day, Combat of course. Combat IS the ultimate 2-player competition stripped down to the basics. One of my favorite Atari memories is playing Combat against my best buddy (3 little planes vs. the big fat bomber) and having him complain about the unfair match-up --- he was the bomber. So then we switched and I beat him even worse. :D I have to confess that he was less experienced, but it was still a sweet victory. I didn't have Indy 500 until a year or two ago but it's a new favorite. I can't get my wife to play Combat though. She'll grudgingly play Indy 500, but she rather likes Street Racer.

I suppose you've got a Lynx you use to prop up a table while your Gameboy sits in a place of honor. Probably on a heap of pillows, getting fanned by pretty ladies. Let the flogging commence. Oh, and 2 Ataris, 1 Nintendo, JVC X'Eye + 32X, currently hooked up.

Anyone know what to safely use to clean Imagic carts??
candiru replied to shining slade's topic in Atari 2600
I've found that a 50/50 mix of Armor All and Goo Gone is perfect for most electronics. I call it All Gone. -
I suppose they lose points for not having end lables, but the Super Famicom carts look great with the console.

When you think you've seen EVERY stupid auction...
candiru replied to Atari Master's topic in Auction Central
I just hope the guy that bought it noticed the damage to the index finger. -
I think Cosmic Ark is sort of considered a sequal game to Atlantis. Speaking of the same characters appearing in more than one game according to this review, Sky Skipper features Donkey Kong as the pesky ape.

I'm sure you and your wife love each other, but before you show her that photo you'd better be absolutely certain she'll never want to have you locked away somewhere. Judge: And what proof do you have that you should be given power of attorney over your husband? Oh, I see....request granted! j/k That's a pretty funny pic. I especially like the invaders on the garage doors. I'm going to be refinishing my basement/gameroom in a year or two and have seriously considered doing a similar design in the floor tiles. (also have not discussed this with the wife)

Why does somebody always have to do this? I was watching this auction, and now that it's been brought to everyone's attention it's gonna go for big $$$. This was probably going to be my only chance to own Dodge 'em, which is as everyone knows, one of the very last demos before retailers had to open a box and eat the cost of having a playable demo!!! I guess my collection will have to go without a true showpiece for a while longer. It would have been awesome though, having people over to my house to show off my collection and just totally knocking their socks off. I'd open up the safe and be real nonchalant and start them off with something fairly tame like Space Invaders, and they'd be like, "This is from 1980" and then I'd be like, "Yeah, but it's still a demo." That'd shut them up. After that they'd be properly humbled and I would show them Air-Sea Battle and tell them how it's still one of the hardest Atari cartridges to find. That would probably just totally blow their mind and be all like "Whoa that alone was worth your time and money!" But you see, I'd just be laying the groundwork for my most devious mindgame yet. I'd play it real straight and brush off my guest's admiration and say something dismissive like, "Yeah it's rare, but it's not a true piece of history---like this one!" You can see where I'm going with this. It's time for the grand unveiling. That's right, DODGE 'EM (CX-2637) 1980!!! I'd carefully pick it up wearing my lint-free cotton gloves and tell them how it's one of the very last demos before retailers had to open a box and eat the cost of having a playable demo! I think they'd probably pass out from the strain of excitement at this point. Then I could take funny pictures of them while they were unconscious. But I guess it's not to be. A man can dream though, a man can dream..... Sorry, I'm bored today.

Pac-Man inside, it's not just a label, it's also a warning.

I'm not 100% certain, but I could swear that in the arcade version of Duck Hunt you CAN shoot the dog. Not while he laughs at you, but sometimes he'll jump out of the foliage during the course of normal gameplay. I'm headed off to Funspot (a classic coin-op arcade/museum) sometime in the coming weeks and I know they have a VS Duck Hunt machine there. Expect confirmation either way. Yeah, you can shoot him in the arcade but I think you're right, you can't do it while he's laughing. Bastard doesn't die though, I think he hobbles out all bandaged up and shakes a crutch at you or something like that.

I agree, scammers suck! That damned bushie, he should have all of his accounts banned.

I don't have a large NES or Genesis collection and I'm not super familiar with the systems' libraries. Except for Atari I'm pretty selective about what games I buy. So what are some of the good lightgun games I should be on the lookout for and which ones are the stinkers? Thanks!

It's official... I'm a "cool adult."
candiru replied to Room 34's topic in Modern Console Discussion
My 12 year old nephew knows about NES and Colecovision thanks to his dad, but I had a heck of a time convincing him that the Coleco wasn't the oldest system around. -
I think the first Activision game I played was Freeway while visiting a cousin who had an Atari before we did. Recalling that made me think of probably the first ever mention of video games in my young life. I'd have been about 4 at the time and my parents came home after having dinner with my aunt and uncle talking about games they played on the TV screen. They talked especially about what must have been Centipede which they described as a game where you shot bugs that broke into pieces, and then you had to shoot the pieces too. The only Activision game my family had when I was a kid was Sky Jinks, which I'm pretty sure my dad bought because he was a student pilot at the time.

Right now it's just my wife and me, and I don't know anyone else who would really appreciate the things I have. So I've told her she can sell it all off. Let's see, life insurance + cash from collection + empty space where my collection used to be. Maybe I should buy some flowers.

If you don't remember your code anymore you might be interested in this thread. Good luck replacing your game. You should be able to replace it fairly inexpensively. If you don't want to go the ebay route you could probably post in the marketplace forum and find somebody with an extra copy.

Having recently bought a few of my first ever pong systems I've been getting interested in their history. I was born in 78 and didn't really experience any sort of videogames until our family bought a 2600 for Christmas 83, so I missed out on witnessing first-hand the introduction of these types of systems. I've been to pong-story.com and it's a great website but I was wondering more about the personal experiences and the overall attitude towards these systems at the time. Some of the things that come to mind are kind of silly, like fanboyism. Did the Atari Pong kids make fun of the Odyssey kids? Did they both make fun of the generic pong clone kids? Were they regarded as the amazingly amazing hot new high-technology gadgets or just as expensive novelties? After finding out about my interest in old games, my wife's uncle told me about the first time he saw a pong system set up. He thought it was one of the most amazing things he'd ever seen--to actually be controlling something displayed on a television screen and wondering how they would ever top something like that. I'm curious about stuff like that. What's your pong experience?
