  1. The Genesis pads are okay I guess, maybe mine are bad, but I find that the D-pads slow down my reaction times compared to joysticks. I do like the NES D-pads though so maybe a modified one would work okay for me. Most of the time I use the CX40 but after a post by Beergnome, I believe it was, I tracked down one of the big Genesis joysticks and it works great too. I love it for playing Joust.
  2. **puts on big fake curly mustache and rubs Armor All on his Atari as it lies tied to a train track** You make some interesting points and maybe I'll shelve the old bottle of Armor All. I've got to say that I didn't expect such heated opinions about all of this. I always kind of liked that high shine though, so I can't agree with you there.
  3. Anybody have any idea if it would work with programs besides Dungeon Master? Right now I have a Mac but have been thinking about also getting an older Windows box like a PII to putz around with. I'd probably just want to have it set up with emulaters and a few older games I like that were never ported for Macintosh.
  4. So what's wrong with Armor All? I put it on my Vader and it makes it all purty.
  5. Picked this up thrifting today, is it anything special? I couldn't really find any info on it other than seeing it mentioned a few times. I don't really have any use for it but I couldn't resist getting it with it having the old CX-40 pictured on the back.
  6. Excellent find. I've found 2600s cheap before but I'm jealous on that 7800. I have yet to find one. I may have to break down and buy one off ebay.
  7. I played a lot of Space Cavern as a kid so I'll always remember the frying sound as your man is killed.
  8. Sometimes it's the simples things first. I'm not near the expert that a lot of the folks around here are, but from your description I'm 95% sure that your problem can be solved by cleaning the contacts on the carts with a Q-tip and alcohol.
  9. Aww come on what's wrong with having about 91 total? or 92? or...... Surely a few more wouldn't hurt.
  10. My 2600 usually got dug out of the basement every couple of years throughout my childhood and teens, but I never had any other games besides the few I'd grown up with. Then during college I was going around junk stores looking for interesting things to turn into "found-object sculptures" for an art class and happened upon a box of carts all marked at $1 apiece. I bought the dozen or so that I didn't have, and went home for my old Atari the next weekend. It was pretty cool, with the old hand-me-down furniture and TV my buddy and I had in that apartment you'd have thought you stepped back into 1979. It wasn't until about a year and a half ago that I really got the Atari sickness and friends and relatives really started to worry about me. Sometimes I still stop by that junk store when I happen to be passing through my old college town, but the sister of the old lady that used to run it bought her out and now they charge $6 for a 2600 game.
  11. Seems like I read somewhere (loonygames.com maybe) that "Todd's Adventures in Slime World" could support up to 16 players.
  12. Indy 500 and Warlords come most noteably to mind. I love simultaneous play on the 2600. We only had about a dozen cartridges for our 2600 back in the day, and I never had a chance to become familiar with a vast majority of the games available. That's what makes this hobby so fun for me, almost every new acquisition is a surprise.
  13. Death Race 2000 is being ported by Glenn Saunders. It has been under development as "Death Derby" for a couple of years now. It looks great. But 2600 games are *hard* to write, and Glenn's a busy guy. I finished my Evil Project From Hell, Glenn...now it's your turn!!!! -Chris Death Race 2000!!!! I didn't know someone was working on this. I re-watched this movie a few months ago and thought to myself that it could be done as a 2600 game. Fitting too, given the time period. I didn't know it had been an arcade game already, after a little Googling I see that it's pretty rare though. I would love to see this one finished.
  14. Sure buddy, I'll keep Warlords. I'll just go fetch the cash out of my gun cabinet.
  15. I agree with what's already been said. Plus, even though you might have better versions and sequals of the games on your cube, it might not work in 10+ years but the N64, with no drive mechanism to fail, probably will.
  16. Have Yo' ass Played Atari Today? Thanks Nukey, I needed that.
  17. Good point. They give it a story like that, but they still have the guy in the artwork playing some kind of tennis. How did Atari end up making a decision like that? (well maybe that picture explained it) Hey guys, yesterday I was playing ping-pong and I started to imagine that I was in this tiny spaceship. It was so freakin' cool.....and the colors.....
  18. Dig Dug is pretty messed up. A strange little man that burrows around underground and pumps unsuspecting subterranian creatures full of air until they explode???? I think Mangia also merits a mention here. /Edit/ I see someone beat me to it.
  19. Stay far away Room 34. Hot Wheels collectors are insane. At least the guys that are into the new stuff and getting the Treasure Hunt cars. Sitting outside Target early in the morning then pushing and shoving, stampeding their way to the toy section the instant the doors are unlocked. My brother-in-law (who is one of those insane Star Wars collectors) once saw a Hot Wheels collector reach out and crush the blister pack of a Treasure Hunt car some kid was holding so it would no longer be "mint on card." I'm a retiring Die-Castaholic myself. I used to collect, but now I only pick something up if it looks cool or it's a really good price. I don't really go out of my way for it anymore. Of course it's just been replaced with Atari, but that's got nostalgia, the thrill of the hunt, the satisfaction of having something tangible, and entertainment all rolled into one. Sorry Mock, not trying to hi-jack your thread. A year and a half ago I'd probably have been all over something like this. It's a cool hobby, I just ran out of room for more stuff.
  20. Another good place to get boxes is to call up your local Wal-Marts, Targets, etc. Often, they have certain times you can go in and pick up boxes while they are stocking the shelves. I did this when I moved recently and there was a pretty good variety of sizes to be had.
  21. Just wanted to throw my hat in the ring as a possible layover for whatever cartridge gets sent around. I was trying to think of something significant around Kansas City when I realized I only live about 18 miles from the O'Shea's Warehouse. I'll do some checking around to see how feasible it is to get a picture by the warehouse. I suppose my chances of actually getting inside are about nil, but it would be pretty awesome to get a photo surrounded by those stacks of Atari games!
  22. I always loved the Vader model 2600, though I'm probably just partial because it's my first system. Maybe it's just me, but the SMS always looked like it could double as an acquarium lid.
  23. You're not from around Kansas City by any chance are you? I saw a system just like that which was sold out from under me at a flea market. That was a crappy day, I had stopped in on the spur of the moment and was a couple bucks short on cash, when another guy came up and bought it. Oh well, he had his young son with him. Hopefully the lad will experience some Atari goodness with his dad.

During my college days, I think I tried something similar to about everything listed here. Well... except the Spam. I think just about everyone owes their life to cheap pasta products at some point. One of my favorite cheap meals and actually one of my favorite meals period is a recipe I got from my mom. -2 potatoes -1 pound of hamburger -1 can pork and beans Slice and fry the potatoes in a skillet, brown the hamburger separate from the potatoes, then drain off the juice from the can of beans. If you warm the beans in the microwave they won't get as mashed up as if you dump them into the skillet with everything else to heat them up. When everthings ready, dump it all together. I like to top mine with ketchup, or if you're really saving money, catsup.
  25. Meh, I think I'll wait a few days until you get around to the DVD interface and true high definition graphics. Don't get discouraged though, I'm sure your progress will pick up once you get a little more proficient at game development.
