Details are still a bit sketchy but over the last two months the 3DO RSA encryption keys have finally been brute forced. The algorithm has been known for quite some time but this is the first bit of solid news on a potential for homebrew. The Older Game releases from a few years back were just Betas that were reverse engineered using the 3DO Game Guru program but this is definitely something different and looks to be the real deal.

Need some honest opinions here.

Jaguars were released here in limited quantities as well as the CD32 as I have previously mentioned - but it is extremely rare to find any on Aus Ebay as Australians are notorious for throwing stuff out and moving on. I bought a CD32 new from "Norman Ross" now known as "Harvey Norman" in 1994 and had seen Jags for sale at at least two locations in the ACT in 1995 - I bought my first 3DO new from one of those shops the same year. In addition to your questions about the TG16 - it certainly was never released here nor was its Japanese counterpart the PC Engine (they are the same). And to everyone else - A typical console costs nearly $100 US in freight alone from either Japan , UK or the US to send here - it makes me cry - seriously! -

In Australia if you want ease of collecting go the Commodore 64 - They had a massive distribution network here and are still relatively cheap. As for a locally released obscure console - forget the VBoy - it was never available here so if you got one you are going to pay high prices for any games/accessories. Consoles that did get limited release - Vectrex , Goldstar 3DO , Amiga CD32 , Jaguar - are all gonna cost $ If you want a cheap oddity then go a Sega Mega CD - although even they are a little high priced. You need to check amps/watts/volts on anything from overseas. Jaycar Electronics and Dick Smith both do converters but depending on your needs your going to pay between $60 and $200. Once you add that to your cost price and freight you may as well pay for a local overpriced version. Anything you decide on send me a message - I may have something in stock and ready to go. Matt. Unusual handhelds are another option - ever thought about a Neo Pocket or Wonderswan? -

I've had a an all white 3DO suggested to me and will be going ahead with one soon! I got a delivery of loose 3DO's out of Japan that had obviously spent their life with other stuff stacked on them as they all had scratched tops! The paint is very durable - the process is identical to that used on plastic fenders. Bonding agents are used and a tough enamel shell formed. A delivered shell would cost approx $100. If you supplied the shell that would drop to $70 - 3DO's aren't that common here. Crazy thing is that I have already sold two of the 64s at that price ...so there is definitely a market. I do clean and check all components and replace capacitors and resistors where necessary during reassembly. -
That is AWESOME! Mattyg checking in

I agree - however all the consoles I do are complete basket cases when I start. If doing this means that a ratty old console rescued from a rubbish tip (the N64 started off this way) finds a respectful place in someone's home then I'm all for it. If a customer wants me to do it to something in A1 condition then I am not above doing that - but my personal coloured stuff were all damaged loose pieces. -
To their credit they didn't make me look like a complete lunatic! Rybags - you may have noticed my boxed 64C during the interview - I will unpack and take photos soon as previously promised time just keeps getting away on me!

I am giving serious consideration to doing a limited run of 50 including numbered certificate and a mario toy - the big issue for overseas buyers is the PAL/240 volt issue. I would be prepared to colour customer shells then send back for the customer to reassemble. This would cut down postage costs and get around the voltage/system issue. I was looking at $250 for one complete boxed as new with certificate and toy or $150 loose. If it was just a shell you are looking at $100 for the respray and postage return. Each one costs me $70 in materials and booth time alone - so not much profit. I have already taken orders for two of the 64s and am doing a Saturn in Sonic blue/white for another customer - finished pics will go up when done. -
I bought a 3DO at the time on the basis of Star Trek TNG : World for all Seasons screenshots - man that game coulda been somethin' Also IMSA racing and D2 on the M2. The script and game on the M2 version of D2 was different to the version later released on the Dreamcast.

Sorry but we are talking about the Amiga CD32 NOT the Philips CD-i As for the CD32 - it is a great option if you liked Amiga games. It was so much easier to place a cd in a drive than to muck around with floppy discs. Most of the library is in PAL so I suggest if you don't have a mouse or a compatible monitor don't bother. Some of the European developers that worked on it made some beautiful arcade style games - Super Stardust and Alien Breed have both gotten recent XBLA upgrades , Chaos Engine and Banshee are fantastic steampunk titles and the CD32 version of Simon the Sorcerer is just plain funny. It is a quirky system that sits nicely between 16 bit and 32 bit. I recommend ! It was never "officially" sold in the states - there is the famous story of Commodore making one last ditch to stave off bankruptcy and literally produced warehouses of them to launch in the US. Sadly under pressure from some US companies (as I am on an Atari forum I won't say anymore) the US government would not let them enter under insolvency laws. Some of that Philippines stockpile still exists and these are the NTSC ones you see permanently on ebay from China. Luckily we did get an official release in Australia and I bought one brand new at the time. Other titles to look out for include the classic point and clicks Beneath a Steel Sky and Darkseed.

perhaps I should have used the term "insincere" as opposed to "lazy" . The original NFS was intended as a street race sim. In addition to your smarmy opponent - which I actually liked - you got some great FMV footage of the real cars in action. The distance you travelled on the track and the speed you drove were real time scaled. ie if you really drove at x speed it would get you x distance. The dashboards were straight out of the original vehicle and the view uncluttered. If you drove the Porsche too hard the back would swing out as it would in real life - the Viper handled like a dog just as it really does etc. Unfortunately this proved too cerebral for most console owners and the game was savaged for having too much FMV , too slow a framerate and too difficult to control. There was nothing wrong with the framerate - the game only appeared slow because well that's what its like in the real world. So what did EA do for the Saturn and PS versions? They removed the FMV opponent (stupid because he could be toggled off anyway) and the footage of the real cars. They increased the framerate and dumbed down the handling to give it an arcade feel. They added a ridiculous HUD that covered too much of the screen and the map which in the 3DO version could only be seen when paused was also thrown onto the screen. The only worthy additions? Two player and the ability to change the in game tunes. The 3DO gave you a much more rewarding experience that had you coming back to it again and again..........if you gave it some game time. The ports on the other hand were the equivilant of gaming junk food. NFS on the 3DO is the only car game ever that makes me want to use manual mode and the in car view. It is a subliminal game. Whilst EA continued to develop this franchise into a bubblegum format some of the guys that were in charge of the Burnout series kept a 3DO with NFS in their office ....so is it any wonder once they were given the NFS franchise to work with that the excellent Shift emerged? I don't think so. NFS in my opinion was the 3DO's finest moment and definitely worthwhile to own - because just about every 3DO owner did - this excellent game is amongst the easiest and cheapest to get - so what are you waiting for?
-
might I also add that the 3DO had some excellent puzzle games - Trip'd , Icebreaker and Gridders as well as the two excellent gameshows Twisted and Zhadnost
-
Firstly - get one but not the Goldstar - poor reliability , although the tray and laser are actually Sanyo they use poor ribbon cable and are prone to mainboard failures. Secondly - no cracked RSA key means no homebrew - period. RJ Mical messaged me recently to say that even he doesn't know a way around it. Thirdly - a lot of games actually debuted on this machine (esp the EA stuff) and are the superior versions - Road Rash , Need for Speed , Shockwave , Gex , Fifa , Madden as well as the 3DO studio stuff like Battlesport and Return Fire are all AAA titles. The Playstation and Saturn versions are the lazy ports. There is also some great PC stuff that is so much easier on a console with less stuffing around - Wing Commander III comes to mind. Fourthly - SFII is brilliant when used with either the Panasonic arcade stick or the Capcom controller Fifth - the 3DO controllers are not that bad - but if you can find them Hori and Logitech made some nice ones too and are the ones to get Lastly - there are over 300 officially released titles available nuff said

PM me ax if you have any Sanyo/Goldstar 3DO lasers and ribbon cables ! I need one set desperately!
-
A couple of footnotes: The 3DO - because of its light display when playing audio cd's - was often referred to as the world's most expensive lava lamp! In addition to its internal memory - memory cards were also available The Sanyo and Goldstar versions had memory managers built in and please come and visit us over at 3DO Zero if you want to talk about all things 3DO (and Jag!)
