Making classic games look better on an LCD TV
mattyg replied to Atari2008's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Make sure also that your input res is either set to Auto or 480 - additionally also set your ratio to 4:3 from 16:9. Cheers -
Price Tags on vintage boxes- keep 'em or peel 'em?
mattyg replied to dr. kwack's topic in Classic Console Discussion
If its the original tag - keep 'em! -
Nup - I've already asked that one - I'm one short myself - did pick up a brand new CD32 exchange unit from him though (console only and his last one ) hence the reason I'm a controller short. - I refuse to pay a ridiculous price for an original or a honey bee. on a similar note I found at the "recycle centre" at the local rubbish tip a near mint collection of 6 Epyx sports cassettes for the C64 - tape is still strong in each cassette but alas I don't have a tape unit to test them - all for the princley sum of $5 !

Yeah well it's an ongoing problem her in OZ ! - nobody wants to touch the older stuff I just happened to be lucky - I help run a market stall next to a computer disposal guy - mainly ex school and government stuff - he had the 64 given to him by someone cleaning out their garage and was just sitting in a corner gathering dust for some time! Sad part is he was also given a boxed monitor with it but dropped it in a car park *sigh* By coincidence I bought an Amiga spare part via EvilBay recently and the guy was living one suburb over from me! It turns out he used to be a former Amiga agent in the UK and brought a whole heap of stuff over to OZ when he emigrated. I now have a constant supply of brand new Commodore/Amiga parts virtually next door!

I'll have a pic up soon but during a visit to a 2nd hand computer store I noticed an old but unusually large box tucked away in a corner. On closer inspection it read "C64C Pro Pack!" - I asked the guy if it worked and he said "I think so" - so I parted with $40 AU for the box without even opening it. On arrival at home I opened the box - and to my dismay it was complete and in as new condition .....and working! So that's a boxed 64C , 1541 Drive , Geos , boxed joystick and the 35 game and utility disk! All manuals and even some Commodore magazines were in there.......sweet!

As mentioned Civ IV is my bane - it's incredibly hard on the higher settings - the handbook even tells you it gonna cheat - but even on the medium settings there are issues. You can be streets ahead on the tech curve when suddenly you lose to an unknown nation who has achieved cultural victory. I learnt to counter this by taking the most direct tree to getting ICBM's and then launching them against any city of cultural value - friend or foe - or there is the issue of "random events".GRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrr....there goes another mouse. I think the worst offenders have been mentioned - Mortal Kombat , most car racing games - I also have a deep set hatred for games that respawn enemies just about on top of you - you know which games I'm talking about! Special kudos has to go to NFS on the 3DO - in that game traffic and accidents affect the chasing police and your opponent equally - the AI seems to be just right - so the question is - what are the excuses for today's games developers?

I have smashed more than one mouse whilst playing Civ IV. I hate the cheating AI - and yet I still go back for more! Dragon's Lair discs make nice beer coasters - nuff said. -
No 3DO games require the FMV module - all developers used a different video compression for their games that used the machine's OS. The FMV module is only required to view non 3DO logo VCD's.

agreed , however my main unit is permanently hooked up to an LCD and is not too bad , some 3DO games actually have 16:9 support and your best picture option is an 100hz 32inch CRT (if you can find one!) PS - shouldn't this be moved to classic gaming?

Why is shipping to and from Japan so damn expensive?!?!
mattyg replied to STICH666's topic in Classic Console Discussion
yeah, the alternative is the slow-boat. USPS prices went up too. You should see how much it is to ship a 12lb box to australia, lol LOL try being an Australian collector For Japanese imports I use risingstuff.com I have found those guys to be the most reasonably priced although shipping may be closer to 3 weeks than 1 -
Help! if you live in the US mid west!
mattyg replied to mattyg's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Definitely passing the message on! -
My aspiring business associate (we are attempting to start a combination bricks/mortar e store combination retro games shop) has to return to the mid west over Christmas ( he is from Kansas - but don't hold that against him!) and would like to check out some retro gaming shops in the area (Missouri & Arkansas included) - if you have any ideas either answer this post or PM me! thanking you guys ahead of time

I love the 3DO I have 3x FZ-1s 2x Goldstars 1x FZ-10 1x Sanyo TRY and just about every accessory you can name - FMV modules , arcade sticks , mouse etc .......and 196 titles. You are best to check out my good friend the 3DO kid's youtube top 50 You will be surprised at the number of quality titles that did make it! It WAS ahead of its time - rule of thumb is anything by EA , Crystal Dynamics or Studio 3DO are virtually must-haves!

Don't give up hope. That one that you posted wasn't too bad. There's two complete ones on eBay right now that are looking pretty good. Robotkingnes is bidding on those systems too so no point! keep looking - I recently picked up an Odessey 4000 and an Odessey 2 CIB at reasonable prices (including US to Australia postage) - they do happen! ......mind you it took a lot of looking and losing out to those guys before a couple slipped through the net.

My white Lynx is currently on ebay for sale! if anyone is interested. It was a great colour mod and has turned out well. You can view the pic over in the Lynx section of the forum.

This was a much hyped title that disappeared at about the same time the 3DO did - many shops had even taken pre orders but......nothing.....till now! Bitrate over on the 3DO forums has obtained not only the artwork image CD but the original development mac floppys....and the files appear intact! This has been a very exciting find and whilst reports at the time had it listed in various states of completion this is the first hard evidence and the contents will be interesting. Bitrate still has access to some working dev kits so we will keep our fingers crossed.

Recently modded (coloured) console pics

It's a service that I would be serious about offering except the postage aspect would simply make it too expensive for most. Each example costs around $50 US in man power and materials to produce - I can get that down to $40 each when doing in bulk but sending anything to and from the US on top of that cost (as well as the 240v PAL issue) sadly means it probably wont work. As I said I dont skimp on the finish quality and as most of you know cheaper work means flakey paint! Part of the cost is having to book "time" in the spraybooth. I am toying with the idea of "rescuing" shells from unrepairable units and selling those coloured. Postage would be a lot cheaper and the buyer would simply swap out with their original shell. With postage though you are still looking at around $80 for an empty shell. Anyone is free to PM me if interested - next on my list are 2 more playstations , a megadrive I , and an FZ-1 3DO - now that will be funky! For any Aussies who want to see them first hand they can visit me at the Kryptonite Comics stand at the Morrisett Mega Markets most weekends! -

I would love to - but it probably wont happen for a while - Until playstation , Sega was King here in Oz so Megadrives are easy to come by - SNES's not so much and therefore command much higher prices. I am a bit of a purist and have only coloured consoles in which the original shell is too faded or damaged to restore. SNES's are just too valuable at moment to consider - although any console is in my sights! Unfortunately the picture doesn't do the Sega justice - the colour appears gloss black until light strikes it- V nice! -
Before and after pics of a Sony Playstation and a purple megadrive/genesis - both were working but in very poor exterior condition - they have been completely stripped , cleaned and the empty shells sprayed in an automotive spraybooth with a bonding agent and the finish is supberb - but most importantly has bonded well with the surface and is scratch resistant. I also have done two Lynxes one white , one green which can be viewed over at the Lynx section of the forum - enjoy!

here are the pics!

Well stage two of my colour experiments are complete ! I was concerned that the lengthier process required for metallics may have compromised the plastic's structure but no ! I now have a beautiful dark green metallic Lynx ! I am very impressed with the finish - we also did a maroon Playstation and a deep metallic purple mega drive/genesis ! pics up soon

All praise to the Rev! Very eloquant - a nice change to the trolling and flaming I've been dealing with on less civilised boards (not this one) - my faith is restored!

Arcades: Space Invaders Galaga 1942 Xevious Consoles: River Raid on the 2600 Banshee on the CD32 Novastorm on the 3DO and Total Eclipse on the 3DO and pretty much every shooter on SNK's roll call - they're insanely tough!
