  1. Yup, the portable emulation is somewhat broken. They work fine on Stella based emulators and the Harmony Cart with the original hardware. The members running the "portable controls fix" thread have fixed the two games I wrote that actually come on the flashback devices (Shield Shifter and Strip Off) but do not seem interested in fixing any old homebrew that comes along. I really hope future flashback portable models clean up their emulation. :)

  2. See how I coined the term there. :)

I've just finished "UFO" over the weekend! (for now at least, the best I could squeeze into 4K) and also here is the most recent update to "K.C.'s Crazy Nightmare!"

** Update ** I have added "Handy Pick Hank" to the files on this post to keep the collection together.

My website for other 2600 games I've made:

  3. Scramble uses DPC (no dice), Gingerbread Man uses UA bankswitching (would need a conversion).

NOTE: I notice that people seem to be getting a bit off track from what this thread is intended for...or what I thought it was - fixing the classic game library to work with the handheld. If homebrew programmers wanted their games to be playable on it, they should be able to release their own. Hey, I'm only a hacker! Also, an updated, more-accurate emulator in the next version of the AFP (it's possible) could make all of this work obsolete.

You are a VERY TALENTED hacker! And we are very grateful for your efforts. :) We cannot thank you enough!!!

  4. Hello, I'm the author of two of the homebrew games that are actually included on the Flashback 'Shield Shifter' and 'Strip-Off'. The emulation on the Atari Flashback 5, 6, 7, and the Portable... they all have that same annoying 6 digit score bug where the first digit mirrors the 3rd. If I read correctly Nukey (profound respect sent your way) found and corrected for this in another game. Is there any chance these two can be looked into?

Ultimately, I'd like everyone to experience them as they were meant to be... ;-)

I have attached the copies I have for download on my web site if you can get around to them.

  5. I will be building some more, it's just finding the time. My Virtual Boy stuff (flash and repro carts) is taking a LOT of my time at the moment.

I'm a little late to the party but I'd love a chance to get one of these if they ever come back into production! I purchased a VecFlach a few years back from Richard and I keep an old Pentium 200Mhz laptop around just for the serial port to interface with it! :) I'm guessing now that Willie has started a Vectrex podcast and mentioned his VecMulti, many like me have just heard about it and would love to get our hands on one. I honestly hope Richard can find the time and hopefully earn enough on them to make it worth his effort... I tip my hat and glass to anyone who has surmounted the enormous mountain of research to obtain the knowledge, tools and skills necessary to gift us with such technology!

  6. Hey Neuronic. My favorite atari games are Kaboom and Spider Droid. Both are fairly cheap.

@16-bit I think we will be doing something in the spring.

Thanks for the spiderdroid tip it reminds me of the 80's arcade game Qix!

I just found this video review of Shield Shifter from the Gamecore show floor. This poor guy was constantly interrupted by the announcer! This touches on a point earlier in the thread about him comming on every few minutes with an extremely loud speaker system!

    Shield Shifter Video Review

The poor reviewer could barely get a word in between announcements. I give him credit for trying to cope with the noise.

  7. Damn - it always seems like I am late for the suggestion party...

Anyway - you said the carts are already produced? Did you already take pre-orders and when do you plan on shipping these out?

You might want to check with the folks at GoodDealGames, they are the ones who have produced the Cart's. Their web page says that they will premiere StripOff at the VGEXPO on October 10th. They are already produced, They sent me a copy and it looks great! StripOff required no revisions and worked on the first prototype cart. Shield Shifter on the other hand needed some revisions due to video sync timing that caused screen roll on the early prototype. That was a challenge to fix since I didn't have real hardware to test my changes on but after a few tweaks I did eliminate it for the final version which they released last weekend at Gamecore.

  8. I just played Strip-Off in Stella and this is a really good game.

Why did you go with a Rip-Off inspired game vs. a port of the actual game itself, since no one has ported that to the 2600 yet?

I think the aliens look great. I wouldn't change a thing with them.

Would you consider the following cosmetic changes:

    •
    • Change the color of cannon to green
    • Reduce the height of the fuel cells 50%
    • Change the color of the fuel cells - maybe a shade of blue?
    • Is it possible to change the grey "canyon" to a thin red line that was used in e.g. Stargate?

Someone mentioned having the aliens shoot at you. What about a different alien character that arrives at random intervals that dive bombs ala Galaxian? Hell, you could put wings on him too...that would be somethin'...you may have to slow down the "pirates" after introducing this new dimension to balance the difficulty.

Great suggestions! Unfortunately, the StripOff carts have already been produced. I will hang on to these because I'd like to consider a sequel using the same concept.

My plan was to do a true port of RipOff and I started with the fuel cells and created a basic alien to test the code that allowed them to pick up the cell and run off with it, The test was only a direct horizontal line drive directly to the cell and then the object being carried off by the alien. That went well, so I tried making more than one horizontal row and made the alien move in a patten that would test each row. At that point I wanted to test the alien dropping the fuel cell when he was shot, at this point the game ended up being so fun that I decided to stop there and just add more levels (the level changes after every 30 alien kills) and I used the remaining room on the 4K rom for the level data. I learned enough about crunching code with Shield Shifter that I know now I can fit in more things so I will most likely do a 'Super StripOff' or even a real RipOff clone at some point as well. :)

  9.

In case you can't tell I'm the author of this game and I'm glad to hear all feedback - even negative feedback. I just wanted to point out that the game is a little deeper than you might pick up on without the documentation.

I apologize for the harsh feedback - it could have been more constructive.

I appreciate the efforts of the home brew developers and I hope you are encouraged to write additional titles in the future.

Apology accepted :) - No hard feelings, I've been writing video games since the late 80's and have grown a pretty thick skin. Prior to this feedback my best resource was my 8 year old son! :D - my other game StripOff (it was inspired by an old arcade game RipOff - yeah I know the title can leave a different impression) will be released in cartridge form this October. Out of the 4 Atari 2600 games I've made (so far) it's my favorite. Would you believe that I bought my first Atari 2600 last week just so I could see the actual cartridge run on the real hardware! Lately I've been playing with Vectrex development, It's far cry from coding for more modern PC and XBOX games using Direct3D but it is a fun challenge. Now that I have a real Atari I've made a dozen cartridge purchases on ebay - there is something good to be said for the real thing over emulation. I'd be curious to know if anyone thinks a specific game is a must have (I'm more interested in game play over collection value)? I just showed my son how to find Warren Robinette' secret room in Adventure, he is probably the only kid in his generation to even care! :D

  10. I played that Shield Shitter Shifter game up front...

Basically, it's like the last stage in Phoenix (2600 version without the birds) - you are blasting away through three layers of blocks to kill the thug who's moving left to right at the top of the screen and he's p00ping white missiles on you.

I killed the alien l00king guy at the top of the screen and then you rinse and repeat. It's repetitive and I walked away after the first stage.

How much were they asking for the cart?

$23. just the cart, not even an instruction sheet.i just bought it to have it. i've gotta say that the prehistoric times cart from the tmg con this spring is easily a better game.

as much as i enjoy going to these, theyre not totally my cup of tea. i don't care about anime so knock out half the vendors. i don't care about nes, and was dismayed that i saw alot of modern stuff.

the constant announcements and loud music HAS to go, its way too loud for a small area. i want to hear myself think and be able to actually hear the vendors.

i drove 90 minutes and was only there for like 30. i made a round or 2, decided i wanted a jag, found one and i was done.

i think i prefered the tmg show. it was smaller but the vendors had more room.

Shield Shifter Documentation can be found here: Good Deal Games Shield Shifter Document Link

At a casual glance you might assume that the game is repetitive but your ship actually moves closer and closer to the alien shields as you advance through the levels making it more and more difficult. The two player mode allows you and a friend to play the alien and ship against each other!

In case you can't tell I'm the author of this game and I'm glad to hear all feedback - even negative feedback. I just wanted to point out that the game is a little deeper than you might pick up on without the documentation.

It was a fun program to write when the challenge was to keep it under 4K - with only 26 variables to work with I managed to pull off enemy AI, 2 types of enemy weapons, changing level difficulty, a player with a laser and 96 separate moving shield peaces. :)

  11. OK, but i'm not working on this anymore in favor of Toobin'.

That's too bad. :( KC is one of my all time favorites. I'd love to see several games

ported to the 2600 from the O^2.

    Here is a tongue-in-cheek Odyssey^2 Game --- K.C.'s Crazy Nightmare!!! :)

    K.C.'s Crazy Nightmare!

    Enjoy!

  12. Okay here is my tongue-in-cheek Odyssey 2 remake

    K.C.'s Crazy Nightmare!

K.C. has found himself trapped in a Atari 2600 system along with some enslaved O2 zombies! The Atari system maze is deadly, he cannot touch the maze walls, if he does his 02 code will mix with the 2600 code and destroy him!

Notice the page has a Play it online option!

    Enjoy,

  13. As someone who has played with developing Atari home-brews and was once a big Odyssey 2 fan (I still have it and over 30 games including the muti-cart) I have to say I want to do a O2 port but the odyssey 2 natively supports many more sprites. A new 2600 kernel would need to be written but the sprite flicker may be too high a price. I am playing with the batari multi sprite kernel and have created a simple tung-in-cheek Odyssey 2 game which I'll post soon. Me and my Atari 2600 and 800 owning friends back in the 80's were hooked on UFO, Pick Ax Pete and KC Munchkin. I do think that Attack of the Timelord or Freedom Fighters would be the easiest of the more popular games. Oh yes I also fell in love with Killer Bees later that decade. :)

  14. Wow! I just found that game on MAME. I never played it before but I can see what you mean. I was going to add missiles from the alien but decided I liked the basic Rip-Off type game play element where the game ends when you run out of things for the alien to take. I felt that adding aliens shooting and bunkers would have made it too much of a space invaders clone. I did start to add more details but I ran out of room. For example I actually coded 5 shield levels (you advance through them every 900 points) but it wouldn't compile under 4k, so I deleted 2 and kept my favorite 3 in the game. I'd be curious if anyone is scoring high enough to see the 3 configurations? In my testing I only managed to do it once playing by the 900 rule and I cycled back into the first config before finally loosing. :)

Note: The game play details are on the pages on my site here Strip-Off - KeepAway
