Classic Gaming [Discord Server] - UPDATE
Flojomojo replied to KevinDL's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Exactly! Payment seems optional, and they don't collect any useful data (well, perhaps everything you post, I haven't read the fine print). Seems like there should be more of a catch -- or maybe they dry up and blow away when the angel funding stops. -
I suppose the intent behind the question is something like, "if you believe in Google, why can't you believe in Atari?" ...putting aside all reality of competence, funding, engineering, scale, past performance, etc etc. "If Google can do it, why not Atari?" https://media0.giphy.com/media/yXVO50FJIJMSQ/giphy.gif?cid=4bf119fc5c7dea09446c3069635e1384

Classic Gaming [Discord Server] - UPDATE
Flojomojo replied to KevinDL's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I wish I understood their business model better. Seems like they are reliant on investor money, some freemium upgrades, and a game store that is still unproven. Like Reddit, it seems to be the de facto stop for certain kinds of things, but I wonder how certain their future is. -
Classic Gaming [Discord Server] - UPDATE
Flojomojo replied to KevinDL's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yeah, IRC always struck me as a "you must be present to win" kind of thing ...I am not at a computer all the time so it's hard to have a presence, unlike forum threads where you can catch up later. Discord seems like a happy medium between the two, except more centralized (like twitter or Facebook), which I'm unsure whether I like or not. -
You buy a new car, of course. See the "Tesla on order" thread.

So maybe Rob "stupid shit is my genes, I'm literally made of it" Wyatt has been applying his inspiring work ethic, determination and grit to this and other projects since his accident some 6 months ago?

Nintendo Switch could soon (unofficially) run Windows 10
Flojomojo replied to 0078265317's topic in Nintendo Switch
I get the enthusiasm ... when tablets were new, I put every emulator and hack on anything I could. I also liked snapping up $30 Windows tablets when they were a thing. The bloom is off the rose though ... ergonomics and performance matters. -
It depends on the platform, and what type of software. Most simple "twitch" type games on mobile (which these resemble) are free with ads, sometimes with a few dollars to unlock things. Obviously we didn't have that kind of distribution back in 1982. Our microtransactions were putting quarters into arcade machines. The state-of-the-art extravaganzas with multi-million-dollar marketing budgets that fill up dozens of gigabytes on a BluRay or hard drive aren't very comparable to a couple of kilobytes on a ROM cartridge. Yeah, they're like sixty bucks plus season passes plus unlockables plus smurfberries, etc. Yes, "high resolution graphics" like Microsurgeon were impressive once upon a time, but we were double-knit-wearing, bowl-haircut-having, pudding-pop-eating cave children back then.

You've got the "voice from home" advantage, that's for sure. Sticking commas into a sentence can also have the unintended effect of "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves." Just for fun: I own an Atari 5200 now. I live in Ireland. At the time, everyone I knew said to me, "don’t get it, its a bad console." I bought it, and it was great. The graphics where <sic> far superior than the 2600, and it had great games in my opinion. Buck Rogers was cool, Centipede was better. On the Atari 5200, Pole Position was awesome. If it wasn’t for that controller that the Atari 5200 came with, it would have lasted longer. Or ... In Pirate Speak... I own an Atari 5200 now. I live in Ireland. Yo-ho-ho! At th' time, everyone I knew said t' me, "don’t get it, its a bilge-suckin' console." I bought it, and it were bein' great. th' graphics whar far superior than th' 2600, and it had great games in me opinion. Buck Rogers were bein' cool, Centipede were bein' better, ye scurvey dog. On th' Atari 5200, Pole Position were bein' awesome, by Davy Jones' locker. If it wasn’t fer that controller that th' Atari 5200 came with, it would have lasted longer. Not that it matters. John recently posted a new YouTube rant, citing a July 2018 podcast interview with Michael Arzt as proof that the 'Box will come out as promised. Simple as that!

Sports games... worth collecting ?
Flojomojo replied to TheCoolDave's topic in Classic Console Discussion
They look like donor cartridges to me, but I'm not very interested in sports OR cartridge collecting. At least they're cheap. If I were more into sports games, I'd be really impressed by how you can hack a ROM and insert the current season's team lineups into ancient games to make them more relevant. -
I don't think he said it was a PAL version. He said he lives in Ireland and he has an Atari 5200 "now." He also says people told him not to get it because it's a bad console, but didn't say when. If his username means he was born in 1979, I would assume he got the 5200 more recently than not. That would give him plenty of time to "catch up" to multi-compatible monitors etc at more reasonable prices. Despite all the flaws in his reasoning, I'd trust his inventory of Atari systems the most.

I love seeing stuff like this. If you keep posting them in the forum, more people are likely to see them and provide discussion. Those 4 Imagic games for Intellivision still hold up today, and Demon Attack is IMHO one of the GOAT games on any platform. Per my inflation calculator, $26.95 in 1982 is like $70.98 today, and $29.95 in 1982 is like $78.88, a nice Target or Walmart clearance price What we called games back then would be considered "minigames" or even "microgames" I had exactly zero of these Imagic games when they were new, but I enjoyed scooping them up at crash prices (Intellivision) and yard sales (Atari). Later on, I had some blue-label new in box versions as well.

I'm not going to give a dime to this "project" so I'll do it here. Good for you? You've put your money where your mouth is, at least. You show more confidence in "Atari VCS" than Atari SA does. They launched it through a subsidiary and crowdfunding to reduce financial risk to the company. "Just because" is not a very compelling reason. Those old machines were built in the 1970s and 1980s using simple, mostly off-the-shelf parts. They're easily fixed if they break, and easily replaced if they can't be fixed. I wouldn't be so sure about getting 3 of the "new favourite console," since "Atari Game Box LLC" has not demonstrated that they can build anything in mass quantities -- even their humorous pratfalls where Michael Arzt put his foot in his mouth only come around every few months. Ah, the Atari 5200. The Edsel of game consoles. Reminder: these were made by different companies and people than the "Atari Game Box LLC" scampaign. Ain't no faith like blind faith. Yes, you said that already. We get it. There it is, that's my position as well. "So I say there you go if you still don't believe it well I can't convince you nobody can." There's a place in the United States called Missouri, the "Show-Me-State." In contrast, this guy seems to be keeping his eyes open. I think the person running the project should be held accountable. Maybe they're just filibustering until their latest stupid lawsuit is over? Screencapped that last comment just in case they get delete-happy again.

There's a windowed UI version that's easier to use, but it's never been very friendly. RetroArch, which has weirdness of its own, is more powerful, and in my opinion, easier to set up. www.libretro.com

Yeah there are 3 more after Tommy, for a total of 8 spammy posts. Loyalty to the old brand comes cheap, all hail Fuji and pass the Koolaid.

Classic Gaming [Discord Server] - UPDATE
Flojomojo replied to KevinDL's topic in Classic Console Discussion
My sentiments exactly! Discord seems more powerful and flexible than even the best forums, but it's new and scary to an old fart like me. I'm trying but it's hard for me to get into a flow with it for some reason. I'll keep trying. -
Yup. I'm making a point to include the comments count (and "prototype stage" tag) in my screencaps of posted comments. The count goes up a lot faster than the list of surviving comments gets longer. For what it's worth, [email protected] seems to be a valid contact address for the director of this shitshow.

That's just the worst. Per 5 Reasons Why Comments on Your Kickstarter or Indiegogo Campaign Matter, an honest comments section is crucial for this kind of campaign (just go read it, I'm not quoting it here). It sums up the reasons a project would use crowdfunding in the first place, and "Atari" claimed to share these same values. Removing (or ghosting) critical comments should undermine confidence in the campaign, and should make this thing smell even worse than it already did. Indiegogo really shouldn't even allow this practice, but perhaps they are permitting campaigns to tag things as "spam." I wonder if they could be held accountable, per these suggestions? If I were a backer (and maybe even if I weren't), I'd be asking the people in charge of this to explain themselves. [email protected] is supposedly the primary way to reach them [email protected] should work as well If you get a response, it would be nice to share it here. Their other "official" places are below, but they're so inactive I would assume they're not monitored. To say nothing of their habit of censoring anything critical or questioning. https://www.facebook.com/atariVCS/ https://twitter.com/TheAtari_VCS https://www.instagram.com/theatari_vcs/ This isn't spam, this isn't harassment. "Atari" has three million good reasons to be honest and forthright.

We have all asked the same question. What they tell the shareholders: we are using crowdfunding to reduce financial risk to the organization. What they tell the pigeons: we are using crowdfunding to build a crowd, also this If you like Star Trek, I hope you've seen Star Trek Legacy on Vimeo. It's awesome. Old made new again. Holistic ecosystem, no raw edges.

Heh I remember Pat or Ian reading Bossig's comments on "Completely Unnecessary Podcast" and attributing them to "God Sla Brat" as well. Seemed appropriate enough for that pair of goofballs mocking something really dumb like Coleco Chameleon or AtariBox. It's a lab rat, with graph paper as a background! Hey jerseystyle, you need an avatar. That helps some of us visual types with associating people with names.
