  1. That is very cool. Were these secrets generally known back then, maybe in FAQs or strategy guides?
  2. The portable doesn't run Stella at all. It's a proprietary emulator, and it's the same in all 3 years of the device. The 2016 d-pad seems to be the preferred model, but the differences aren't that big IMHO. They're all nice.
  3. I think it's too early for this, but they could always just check out and stop updating, like the very first Kickstarter I backed many years ago. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hern/waldok-wall-plug-in-speaker-charger-for-the-ipod-n/comments
  4. They've been around on AliExpress for a while, it's like NES quality. I would check reviews or just take a chance for that amount ... or search this guy's channel to see if he reviewed it under a different product name Personally I think the New BittBoy would be a better use of money. More expensive though.
  5. Thimbleweed Park free on Epic store. JamesD, I get the sense that it's just you and me here in this thread.
  6. I think the second one is a more likely fit, at least in terms of nerdy autist stereotypes. Trains and video games, two great tastes that taste great together.
  7. The 1929 stock crash happened over a period of days. The video game crash was more of a gradual slump -- you can't put an exact date on it. I don't see a problem with using 1983 as the starting point. The magazine you quote (available in full here, good read) has a cover date of March 1984 which means it was on newsstands in February or as early as January. The editorial content, which uses the past tense a lot, was probably prepared sometime in 1983. Note that they're going bimonthly for a while, starting with this issue ... Perhaps it's a precursor to the "crowdfunding" of today, but doesn't this come across as a tiny bit needy? I like how the next page after the "shakeout" article advertises "great arcade games of the past." Retro gaming is retro itself. To say nothing of the dudes on the cover. Miner 2049er wearing a 1 on his overalls and splitting the tape -- ported to everything, largely forgotten now. Same thing for his mule. Probably didn't hurt that they bought the advertising space on the reverse side of the cover page and immediately after the editorial page. Donkey Kong with a 2 on his chest -- largely forgotten until 1994 when he returned to GameBoy, an eternity in game years Q*Bert -- beloved but never remade in a way that caught on. Good cameos in the Ralph movies Pink Panther -- was to be the Probe 2000 mascot. Sold home insulation for a time. Good Mancini theme. Forgotten. Dirk the Daring -- borderline unplayable "interactive cartoon" that keeps coming back because it must sell even though everyone hates Dragon's Lair. Indiana Jones -- inscrutable Atari VCS game and a wasted license, to be redeemed by Atari Games in the arcade and LucasArts on computers, as well as movie sequels. NOT a videogame icon worth mentioning in 1984 E.T. -- what else needs to be said? We don't even keep cookbooks anymore; we just look for something well-reviewed online when planning meals. I guess that qualifies as "tracking recipes" in a modern sense.
  8. Knowing full well that one does not simply dip one's toe into masocore games like the casual dork that I am.
  9. Has anyone tried the games from 10birds? They're like Dark Souls for mobile. I think Ire is on the Nintendo Switch as well. Animus - Harbinger Ire - Blood Memory Animus - Stand Alone I forget which is which, but one is a fully fleshed adventure game, one doesn't need Internet and can be played anywhere, and there's the other one. They seem to be much beloved. If I were to dip my toe in this genre, this is how I'd do it.
  10. Is that when "Atari" will make another announcement of an announcement? Or offer a new T-shirt design? That's the week when the big kids will be at the Game Developer Conference. The last time "Atari" went anywhere close to there (they were actually at a hotel across the street), it didn't go so well for them. That was almost a year ago. The giant pile of derp that followed has got to be one of Michael Arzt's worst moments, right up there with having to share a hotel room with Darth Vader after killing all the younglings.
  11. I was legitimately confused and had to go looking it up to see what you meant, because I had never seen that word before. I never even guessed that English might not be your first language, I just thought you were being fancy!
  12. I like this article. I missed it the first time around (I think I read most videogame magazines at the supermarket), but I remember catching it on Archive.org or similar and being impressed at how well it holds up. Exceptions being these chestnuts Does anyone use a computer to track recipes? Did they ever? It was such a tedious lie, way less useful than "it will help me with my homework." Also, this Cute, punny, wrong. Anyone know where the author David Lustig is today?
  13. Neo Geo mini plushie http://tinycartridge.com/post/182914110602/snk-is-pretending-this-is-a-practical-item-i
  14. Ergonomically problematic. Invisible water wings?
  15. And you don't understand why, yet you go all voodoo superstitious against Steam without evidence. Wouldn't it be simpler to just detach your payment method from steam instead of uninstalling it and publicly declaring you don't know what you're doing? Good luck with the bank. This seems like a good opportunity to perform a security checkup on your computer and bank card hygiene.
  16. The slim form factor looks nice to me. They don't HAVE to have a giant boxy footprint in these days of flat screens -- so long as it's stable and sturdy and doesn't tip over. That Etsy link looks like it would need to be fastened to the wall. Any plans for a cocktail table? That would have a higher Spousal Acceptance Factor at my house.
  17. They certainly look retro/vintage, I'll give them that. If I liked the form factor more, I'd get one and convert it so it played my favorite games.
  18. Is SONIC JAM emulation, or ports? I would think the Saturn would not be fast enough to emulate the previous gen console.
  19. I did not know that was one of the only games that did that! https://segaretro.org/Twin_Advanced_ROM_System So weird ... thanks for pointing that out. I had one of the multi-use cartridges too. The west really got the short end of the Saturn stick. that's yet another reminder of how much better we have it nowadays, where even potato tablets have gigabtyes of memory and storage, and full screen animation with smooth framerates are considered standard. We also get many more games localized for world territories. I haven't been tempted to import anything in a very long time. It wasn't that way back in the Saturn/Playstation days.
  20. That's $0.11 less than the standard Steam price! And you wouldn't need an internet connection. But you'd need an optical drive, and the Steam version goes on sale a lot. Atari. So much more than releasing the same thing over and over again in many different formats.
