The cartridge slot was pitched to have lots of potential. It could have been Mars compatible but the 32x never took off. The slot is mostly used for memory card savegames (which are remarkably tiny, like 512k total I think) and for RAM expansion for 2D fighting games --again I might be misremembering, but up to 4MB which helped loading times for games like King of Fighters 95.

How Do You Protect Your Portable Consoles?
Flojomojo replied to Games Retrospect's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I hate screen protectors. I'd rather have a scratch than the bubbles and crap that go along with a protector. -
Besides, it's already been remade. Looks like a particularly shitty Flash game. http://madplanetsgameroom.blogspot.com/2011/01/custers-revenge.html

It was always offensive and gross, and it was never a good game. If you can't come up with a better idea for a game concept, then I'm truly sorry for you.

Well there's the craziest overreaction I've seen today.

> Did I miss anything? Just a few of the darkly humorous turns on this long, boring road to nowhere. The latest charming British-American frontman for Ataribox broke his leg jumping out of an airplane and told backers not to expect working graphics or sound anytime soon. Conveniently, he has convinced at least some of the pigeons that "hardware can take a long time when you are doing it right." Also, they sold some T-shirts, which ended up costing European buyers big bucks because of customs fees. It all seems like the long way around to playing Atari Vault and Tempest 4000, which are already available on better, existing platforms that can also play zillions of games.

How good are you guys at Galaga?
Flojomojo replied to Stewhain33's topic in Classic Console Discussion
There's a dood in the "budget arcade cabinet" thread called "negative 1" that eats these old games for breakfast, can get kill screens in PAC-MAN etc. I'll bet he has some tips. Also git gud -
Probably best to think about what you really mean by "get into retro gaming." If you want to play games, you don't need original hardware. Emulation would be best. Maybe start with Console Living Room on archive.org or an Atari Flashback (hardware plug and play OR software collection) to get started. The Nintendo Switch has a whole lot of retro collections and it's new enough, it will be getting more and more games for many years. If you want to collect, then you'd better be prepared to pay out the nose for cartridges on eBay. If you don't even know what you're getting into, be prepared for a LOT of disappointment, as old games are old. https://videogamecritic.comis a good place to start for many, many game reviews. http://www.racketboy.com/guide/retro-gaming-101is another. The Atari 2600 would be a decent place to start with original hardware, I guess. But the Atari Flashback 9 is most of the experience without the collection hassles.

I bought the Saturn specifically *because* of Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA, and Panzer Dragoon. I love the simplicity of the block/punch/kick controls. If it weren't for Dead or Alive, there'd be a big SEGA-sized hole in fighting games. 3D so tasty! I think you're right about the later games. The square retail box, with a system with round buttons inside, would be the later edition.

It's Nintendo-on-a-chip and the games are reasonably accurate. The thing is worth having -- in my case, the system sellers are 7800 Food Fight, 7800 Asteroids, and Solaris. I guess Desert Falcon too, but I always liked the idea of that game more than the reality. The 7800 could play 2600 games, and the 2600 library is much larger, so I think it's representative of the real thing. You can probably find one real cheap if you look around, because it's old and unloved.

DOOM is on GOG for two dollars. If you buy it, they'll put Elder Scrolls Arena and Daggerfall into your account. Both of these games are free to download off the internet, but usually the GOG-managed installers are easier to handle.

Not true! Launch Saturn came with Virtua Fighter! And you could get Virtua Fighter Remix (same thing, but with some textures and bigger figures) for free. The 3-pack with Daytona, Virtua Cop, and Virtua Fighter 2 came later when they discounted the system. I don't think you could buy a Saturn without a game. I remember not being able to buy a PS2, Gamecube, or Xbox 360 at launch without some kind of retail bundle, usually with 3 games, many of which were not that great.

Are Sony Trinitron TVs as Good as Everyone Says?
Flojomojo replied to Games Retrospect's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Trinitron tubes show up in other stuff, too. I had a Macintosh monitor that was obviously a Trinitron inside, though not labeled as such. Other examples include the Macintosh TV, eMac, and Apple Studio Display all of which used Trinitron technology. -
Are Sony Trinitron TVs as Good as Everyone Says?

They have good color reproduction, sharp pixels, and a flat front with square corners, making them ideal for computer displays because nothing gets distorted. Are they "all that" in modern times, when we have super high resolution LCDs at much lower prices than the old CRTs? No, in that case, they're only "good for what they are," which is to today's eyes, a 60Hz bulky tube screen. That said, if you have a choice to get one vs some random no-name for retro gaming, choose the Sony. -
AtariBox backers be like please visit The Oatmeal for many funny cartoons, including this one in context

Price, value, relevance, timeliness seems akin to "our" Ataribox. Old info, that nobody asked for, half over, very expensive. What's not to love? When you're doing them right, wooden toilet seats can take a long time.

Prior to this, they were selling low-tech plug and play retro football games. I feel like it's been irrelevant since the real days of the colecovision. By overplaying his weak hand, Cardillo merely exposed what a weak position they're in. Their advanced beginner hobby type work reminds me of Cardillo's "Jersey Mint Records" http://jerseymintrecords.com What the hell is this supposed to mean, "fully functioning?" "The Jersey Mint is a fully functioning independent record label with artist whose music ranges from Pop, R&B, Hip Hop and Dance." It's as if Castle Windows marketed themselves as "legitimate businessmen."
