what innovations has nintendo really brought the industry?
Flojomojo replied to xg4bx's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Do you mean never got a home port? Because it was in arcades, and I remember seeing it. Yeah, it's pisspoor. https://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9743 Here's a sweet Spy Hunter remake for modern PCs. I like it a lot. Where is an Activision Anthology for current systems?
Flojomojo replied to OscarGungan's topic in Modern Console Discussion
While I'm sure it's standard practice for companies of this size and complexity, I find it viscerally disgusting to hear about massive overcompensation of executives while people are being laid off. According to these articles, Bobby Kotick receives about $28M per year as CEO of Activision. The CEO himself could fund a retro product with spare personal funds if he cared to. I suppose the "opportunity cost" for him would be another cost of lacquer on his yacht or some other golden toilet kind of thing. The poor dear. $28M is 306x the salary of a median Activision employee (which is $93K). https://kotaku.com/activisions-ceo-made-28-6-million-last-year-300-times-1825715966 Someone in the comments said that is enough to give each of the 4000 employees a $7000 raise. -
Or the arcade version of Cruis'n USA, when you hit a cow. God that whole series is tasteless and tacky.

I agree with you about how it would be nice to have modern collections (the Remixed collection is ten years old), but it's looking more unlikely than ever. Big layoffs are coming this week. :-( https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-08/activision-is-said-to-plan-job-cuts-as-sales-of-key-games-stall https://kotaku.com/activision-blizzard-employees-brace-for-massive-layoffs-1832488999 Mobile releases aren't as evergreen as console games; they need care and feeding to work with the ever-changing mobile OS and API updates, both on Apple and android stores. This article is particularly dire, Fortnite "doomed" Activision/Blizzard by being free. https://www.ccn.com/activision-blizzard-employees-doomed-by-fortnites-dominance -

Hard to believe that Roadblasters (yay!) came out the same year as Spy Hunter II (boo!) -
Yeah, that's probably the naughtiest title for any classic game, aside from "Beat 'em and Eat 'em." I envy you coming to this for the first time: https://youtu.be/XnrgtEzblOE

Has anyone printed end labels for Jaguar like they do for Nintendo 64?

Megaforce is fun and interesting, way better than the forgotten movie. http://www.8-bitcentral.com/reviews/2600megaForce.html I like SEGA's Star Trek Strategic Operations Simulator. Empire Strikes Back is fast, fluid, and enjoyable. Star Wars Arcade was awesome as a coin-op, but the Atari 2600 version is hot garbage.

I feel like Fantastic Voyage predates Vanguard (on Atari) by a lot, but they both have ©1982 on them. Does anyone know which one came out first?

I think we can officially proclaim Ataribox to be a clusterfuck. Yep, "simple as that." Let's pin this one on Fred. Feargal's got a bit of a history with this. Rob too! Mike, they're singing the song of your people! And that's the story of this thread.

Longevity. Like this thread. -
I'm fine with keeping everything electronic and abstract, but that 8-bit manual is beautifully illustrated! I've blocked the 2600 comic out of my memory. It's pure yeccch to see it again. This is a newish take on the "story." https://m.comixology.com/Centipede-1/digital-comic/534548

You are an empathetic person. I often have to remind myself that there are living people with intentions and feelings inside all the cars in my way on the highway. Perhaps all the Burnout-type games with no consequences for wreckage have gotten to me. Or more likely, they speak to the fantasy life I would like to enjoy, at least briefly in safe spaces like on TV. Stay away from Bloody Human Freeway, too. https://atariage.com/software_page.php?SoftwareID=4034

When did Activision start dispensing facts in their manuals?

Articles from late '91/early '92 about the discontinuation of 2600
Flojomojo replied to chewy's topic in Atari 2600
I doubt it was much of an "event," just a whimper/fart. Announcing the end of production for a game platform is kind of a new thing, because of internet publisher's desperation for "scoops." There were some magazines talking about Atari even then. Get to Archive.org and look at the covers of magazines like GamePro and NextGen, and look for ATARI in the top line where they list all the platforms mentioned inside. If you find an "article," I suspect you'll be disappointed, it's probably just a sentence in a box with a photo of something you've seen a hundred times before. -
Keyboard shortcut history?
Flojomojo replied to davidcalgary29's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
That's an interesting question. All I know is that the bottom left corner of the QWERTY keyboard is the business district of Undo, Cut, Copy, and Paste (Z, X, C, V) for me. We should ask some older people. -
BTW this village is still in search of its idiot.

Is that some kind of Fartist? Their gaslighting is really spectacular. They say, "We only share things we know are confirmed, preferring not to report every gory detail," when it's literally the gory details that they've shared the most. It would be easier to minimize The Skyborne Misadventures of Rob Wyatt if they had anything else to say or show, but they don't. Atari, so much more than truth and honesty.

control+C is Copy for me since 1984. I think I would just whale on the BREAK button on the old mainframe. -
Keyboard shortcut history?
Flojomojo replied to davidcalgary29's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
I feel like keyboard shortcuts as we know them today started with the Macintosh. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_key Windows stole most of these, so IMHO they're pretty close to being standard now. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201236 Prior to the Mac, I would think that most terminal-based shortcuts were system-specific, not common across platforms. -
Wow, I had to go and see it for myself. Yup, there it is, "less is more" on updates. Since they've only shared things that have been confirmed, our assumptions that very little has been confirmed are accurate. Maybe they should have made this a stretch goal. Remember when they said this? It's still part of their pitch, you can check it. What kind of chump is taken in by their attempts to make "backers" believe them and not their own eyes? Andy and John are willing to go to bat for them, based on nothing but shadows of promises, with money up front, no refunds. Wow, that's something to see. I'll bet there are some lessons in "community management" to be learned here. That (s)campaign is much older than "Atari VCS," so we still have plenty of time to see the full story unfold for "our" project. Atari should totally borrow the winning phrase "our refund policy is more of a fact, like gravity, than a policy. No refunds." But back to Ataribox ... John's accent makes it sound like he's saying the latest update was "shart and sweet," and I can agree with half of that.

IF you were born in 1969, you'd be 10 in 1979, which I agree is Peak Atari Age IF you had children at age 25, yes they'd be 25 now You'd have to have children at age 15 for them to be 35 now (kid born in 1984) or be born in 1959 to have a 35yo at age 25 yourself assumption: many Atari kids are "late bloomers," meaning no rush to breed further assumption: many people on here are male, meaning much less of a ticking biological clock personal: my kid was born in 2007, when I was 37yo. I am considered an "older parent" but well within the norms conclusion: your math is wrong, your logic is fuzzy, your assumptions are whack, but we like you anyway. Just a little less than if you were of Atari age.
