  1. I got to try one of these the other day, and think it's really cool. I'm tempted but the fact that the promotion for the free Darth Vader game *just* ended is a buzzkill. Also I'm not sure how much uninterrupted game time I would get to enjoy it. I hardly play regular console games anymore for that reason as it is. Also, it's $500.
  2. "Free" as in "stolen," sure! The ROMs on commercial plug and plays have been licensed and the intellectual property owners get a cut of the sales. They're also convenient, and as others have pointed out, many of them are cute. Can't beat emulation for completion, convenience, and versatility, but plug-n-plays are not directly comparable with RetroPie, especially if you care about the ethics of copyright infringement.
  3. Can someone summarize? I'm allergic to infomercials.
  4. Part of "their" fun, not part of "our" fun. I can see the appeal even though I don't do it myself. I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow to the knee, yadda yadda.
  5. Emulator timing isn't always perfect, and some people like to play with old hardware. The thrill of the hunt is part of the fun as well.
  6. You guys are straining my memory, but I seem to recall Sony VAIO laptops, the little purple ones, as good for multimedia and maybe even games way back then ... the problem I remember was that they didn't have NT or Windows 2000 driver support so they were stuck in Windows 98-land forever. That was a dealbreaker for me, but for you, it's a feature. AMD K6 was indeed way cheaper than Intel, that's what I would use in my builds back in those days.
  7. I agree that a desktop is the way to go especially for a beginner on a budget. Laptops from this era were very expensive and oriented towards business, plus expansion is much harder. I would hit the thrift shops, personally. (Actually personally I prefer emulation with DOSbox to ancient hardware, but that's not what was asked)
  8. https://www.swtorstrategies.com/2020/01/star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic-remake-could-be-in-development.html weaving the two single player games together and making the story canon? I'd buy that.
  9. Can we get the empty box with POSTAGE DUE on it? Or maybe unpaid customs fees, like the folks who ordered a VCS T-shirt?
  10. I lost some money on OnLive. Gone forever! Let's make a forum for complaining about how physical media is the best. OH WAIT WE ALREADY HAVE THAT.
  11. Oh, I think I just cracked the code. "Unprecedented levels of flexibility and control" means they will release updates whenever they feel like, it, while holding the backers' money. That's not what I thought it meant.
  12. Once you ignore a topic, it seems to be gone forever. Is there a way for a user to list them someplace? The ignore user function is easily discoverable, but there doesn't seem to be a similar function for topics.
  13. Looks great, @Spriggy, can't wait to eat! When will they be ready?
  14. If they were to offer a lifetime* subscription to AntStream, that would go a long way towards making this something different, at least for a while, without costing anyone much money. There are few enough VCS buyers that the strain on the AntStream network would be minimal. Of course, this means putting aside the delusion that many VCS buyers would actually pay $10 a month to stream ZX Spectrum games. It wouldn't be enough to change my mind, but it would give "Atari" the opportunity to say "A $360 value! Atari VCS pays for itself in just 3 years** of awesome retro gaming!!" Unlike a lot of other stuff they've said (and left unsaid), that would be close to the truth. *Lifetime = lifetime of the AntStream service, or support for Atari VCS, not the person who bought it. Either way, I would expect it to be a finite amount of time. **AntStream service not guaranteed to stay in business for 3 years. No refunds for unused periods of service, not transferable, some restrictions apply.
  15. Well done Nathan. That's truly the faintest of faint praise. File it next to, "You don't sweat much, for a fat girl."
  16. PCMag and "many others," yet nobody else saw fit to write about it. Must have been truly memorable. I'm surprised they're getting salty with their backers, who just want an update.
  17. No, you're not alone. I'm already there. And no one wants to hear my hot takes about the other new retro remakes
  18. This is what I see. Maybe you're sharing a file that is in your album or something not shared to everyone/public?
  19. Every platform seems to have the wish-hards, and people who will go to the mat to defend them for some reason. Stadia seems like it has nowhere to go but up, so long as it gets some more content. So far it's the same stuff that OnLive had, which is the same stuff that gets given away by Humble Bundle, PlayStation Plus and GamePass. I wonder what's holding back big publishers like EA and Blizzard? Are they asking too much, or holding out until they have their own streaming service, until we have a fragmented mess like streaming video is right now? Until the inevitable consolidation into a winner-take-all fat bundle?
  20. Like an American political sex scandal. It's funny that we have these little rituals, like publicly apologizing for transgressing social norms, or following through after taking three million dollars from people who just wanted some old games.
