  1. Release info for this old game: http://atariage.com/software_page.php?SoftwareLabelID=563
  2. I think Playstation brought in a lot more people outside the usual "gamer" circles. 3Dfx cards were coming of age then, too -- and were starting to get cheaper. I don't think believe Jaguar would have done well regardless of the competition -- there was not enough development in the pipe, and not enough resources being thrown their way, for Atari to do much with their platform. Sony had more than games, they had a programmer's library to make it easy to develop on their system.
  3. djour, check out the Kickstarter FAQ. It's not a store, and if you contribute, it's for a project, not a product. I don't believe in Atari 2017 sufficiently to support a project, especially when a product is far from a sure thing.
  4. Playing Cybermorph with one hand truly redefines "where did you learn to fly."
  5. Hyperboy, where do you store 27 arcade cabinets?
  6. It's easy to pick out the big winners, but even many of the things you list are deeply flawed or not quite relevant. Oculus Rift was an even bigger Facebook acquisition. Ouya was over $8M and people still treat it as a punchline. Super Troopers 2 is a film, not a game. Pebble is bankrupt and Fitbit has its assets. Micro 3D printer is neat, but one of a kind Reading Rainbow is wonderful, but not really germane to the discussion From my extensive list of Kickstarters I've backed, here are some retro game related things that have failed to launch: Intellivision Gen 2 Crystal Quest Classic Colecovision Vector Tanks 3 David Crane's Jungle Adventure Way of the Rodent Sure, that stuff is pretty niche, but I think it proves the point that not everybody gets to be an astronaut. There are many other things that I personally backed that: funded, but failed to deliver funded, but took forever to come to market funded and delivered, but disappointed upon arrival And that's just the stuff with which I was personally involved. High profile fuckups, like Coleco Chameleon (and its slightly less imaginary sister, Retro Magazine), seem way more similar to Ataribox than anything good or successful coming out of crowdfunding. If crowdfunding doesn't set off alarm bells in your mind, I think you're not paying attention.

  8. That's the same statement they made at E3. This has already been discussed several pages back. You can stick the web version into a machine translator for the relevant bit:
  9. What's a "Big Brother style setup"? The screen watches YOU?
  10. The video is a classic SNL bit with Bill Murray and Steve Martin. Atari's "marketing" is similarly old-school. In the days of Electronic Gaming Monthly, perhaps you could get away with nothing but a console shell and some tantalizing rumors. That was 25 years ago, and the market is full, and information spreads quickly. Showing a cute box isn't even the first step anymore, ESPECIALLY when everyone knows you're crowdfunding and probably don't have the resources to do it right.
  11. Good point, but I think I'd be just as happy playing the six dollar GOG version
  12. They say "voice enhanced" on the packaging, too. Apart from a Type and Tell, all work without The Voice, it's strictly optional.
  13. If Aliens, Tempest and DOOM couldn't save the failing Jag, nothing could.
  14. Could they have possibly picked a more provocative, obnoxious, and ultimately false symbol than the big 3D X squashing Mario?
  15. Looks like July 28th is the day. Bill L also mentioned it as the day the press embargo ends. https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sega-atari-classic-consoles-will-begin-pre-orders-/1100-6451752/
  16. I would think plugging your old consoles into relatively dirty house power would be a lot worse than any minor internal variation in voltage. If this were a major problem, wouldn't we have heard more about it? Not that the average person would be able to distinguish everdrive-related frying from component failure due to being thirty years old. I don't own any everdrive stuff, nor am I an electrical engineer, but my ignorant wishful thinking says to keep calm and carry on.
  17. I might make a hobby of GIF'ing the more interesting looking characters. They're much less annoying to me as a silent movie.
  18. I'm not watching any of these, nor do I feel the need to. "Sturgeon's law" says that ninety percent of everything is crap. How much crap is in crap, then?
  19. Quarter to Three: Atari wants in on the throwback console fad
